Owners probably aren't against it but they would use it as a bargaining chip in the next CBA. We'll give you the DH if you give us X.

I guess they would say they have to spend more $ on an extra hitter in the NL but I doubt they actually care about that.

It's gotten to the point where a. DH-only players barely get paid and b. a good roster can be constructed so that a full time DH is never needed. I don't think this is much of a concern any more as it once was.

I'm pretty sure the only side that argue FOR pitchers hitting is NL fans in their antiquated view that it actually adds something (positive) to the game. If the baseball subreddit is any indication (yes Reddit is a cesspool but there's a large community there) then there are a large number of fans that actually want to keep the DH to the AL only.

Granted, I'm sure this is a change that people would forget and welcome a couple of years after it is implemented.

I’m pretty sure another argument they use is that a universal DH makes the AL/NL split meaningless.

As you say, I’m sure they’ll get over it.

There are already way too many inter-league games IMO, so the split pretty much IS meaningless. At least this will make inter-league suck less.

Probably a good lock on the Mike Fiers thread. Whichever boring mod made that boring decision - good boring job.

The Astros are hiring Dusty Baker to be their Manager. Nothing says "don't worry, we won't be using technology to steal signs (or for anything) anymore" than hiring Dusty Baker. This is such a bizarre fit. Progressive FO meets old school head on.

They just regressed back to prehistoric times.

Dusty Baker is the fnnn worst possible choice that org could make... I am not even a Houston fan but what were they thinking.. Dusty Baker will meddle along in the reg season and blow it for you in the playoffs and is all about veterans playing over young etc even if they suck...

I am going to all my Fantasy teams to dump all my Astros assets.. LOL Talk about a BS PC move! Arggg

Damn,, Ole Dusty and the Astros are getting destroyed in the comments section of MLBtraderumors on FB... Every thing they are saying is on point, but, I feel kinda bad for Ole Dusty, even though I wouldn't want him within 10 country miles of my manager's position.

A disciplinarian who wants to be all the players friend. The conflicted manager...that is exactly what the Astros needed

You know what else is F#$d up... The Astros hire a Manager before their GM so now the GM is stuck with Baker... If he talks s*** about him he won't get the position and if he bites his tongue and get's the position, he has to live with him. Totally ass backwards if you ask me.. GM first then Manager, if both are vacant.. Not like there is a long line-up trying to kick in Dusty's door and offer him a job..

Seems like a rush job to get a manager in there before ST.

Luis Urias underwent surgery on Tuesday to repair a fractured left hamate bone and is expected to be sidelined for the next 6-8 weeks.

Tough break.

I guess it's better to happen now, should be back early April. Silver linings... :P

Look on the bright side. It's not like he had any power to lose to begin with.

Running a .285 ISO only after they implemented that juiced ball in triple A.

He's projected for 10-15 HR in 500 AB in 2020. That's about what Votto, Reddick, Moran, Miggy, and Vladito had in 2019 in 500 AB.

Your comment he doesn't have any power is incorrect, sir.

If they wanted a manager who would stand up to the media and deflect the questions that will inevitably haunt them all year, they could've done better than Dusty f***ing Baker. Literally any old man in his 60s or above would have handled the media well this year, brushing off excessive questions with a bit of cheer here and a lot of grumpiness there, using his age as an advantage that way.

But why is everyone in the media talking about credibility here? He's the guy who coined the term 'steroid McCarthyism.'

Here's what former GM David Samson had to say about it:

"Dusty Baker's going to be in that dugout and get told what to do by a GM, someone who is his grandson's age?" Samson asked. "Is that the plan for you Jim Crane? Or did you hire Dusty Baker because you knew that Major League Baseball wanted there to be some level of credibility in that dugout? Where you knew you'd have to give control to someone like [buck] Showalter, [John] Gibbons, someone that has managed before. But you also knew you were going to go minority. You also knew you wanted to go with someone that was a player's manager. Who can really make sure that the clubhouse is always good, who can keep out outside distractions."

He then goes on to laugh at the idea, being put out by all the mainstream baseball writers, that Dusty Baker commands such respect that the media will ask fewer questions of the Astros this year.

Dusty Baker's job is going to be to fill out lineup cards the way management wants him to, handle his pitching staff the way management wants him to, and draw on his 50 something years of baseball experience to deal with the media and keep the clubhouse happy. I don't think this hire is nearly as consequential as most people are making it seem. He might even be the right guy for the job.

Still seems bananas that John Gibbons would not be the perfect hire for their situation.
