saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted January 1, 2020 Posted January 1, 2020 Bumping for bob Well my fav soccer club westbrom is tied atop the championship with Leeds and they face off in 15 minutes so I’m not sure I can support bob at least for today

Laika Community Moderator Posted January 1, 2020 Posted January 1, 2020 Sounds like Josh Donaldson might end up with the Twins. That would be a weird uniform to see him in, eh chaps.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted January 1, 2020 Posted January 1, 2020 With the way that JD takes care of his body, he could very well still be good in 4 years. The Twins offense will be even better with him.

I’d be worried about a reoccurrence of his thigh issues, but even so he’d likely be a very good DH to replace Cruz (assuming Cruz retires at the end of his contract).

As opposed to the majority of the millionaire high performance athletes in baseball who clearly don't care about taking care of themselves past age 32 and drink beer and eat chips all day. I mean, like, where does someone get the idea that Donaldson takes care of his body more extra special than any other MLB player? Because he's vegan? That's more to do with being a douche than anything. Plus we just had the Bautista example which throws this argument down the toilet.

I'm not interested in a long conversation about this, but I've read in several places that he works out with an intensity which exceeds that of most other players. He follows a very strict health regimen to keep himself in shape. I'm sure there are some players that do the same, but I feel better about betting on his health than the many other guys who take a more relaxed approach.
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted January 2, 2020 Author Posted January 2, 2020 Great deal for Chicago. I’d kill for their outfield!
TheHurl Site Manager Posted January 2, 2020 Posted January 2, 2020 He'd have to be in the top 2% to earn $50M in his first 6...but zero reason to dick around with his service time now and no need to deal in arbitration. I think Chicago comes out a little behind in the first 6 on this one...but it's pretty small in the end. It will all depend on his value in those two options
glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 2, 2020 Posted January 2, 2020 Great deal for Chicago. I’d kill for their outfield! Apparently it is 6/50 guaranteed, and can max out at $88m over 8 years if both team options are picked up. Good deal for the White Sox, but good for Robert too, I think. He'll start the season on the team instead of held down to manipulate an extra year, so he really only gives up one free agent year. Would he be able to get more than $88M with 3 min years, 4 arb years, and then his first of free agency? Maybe, but not a guarantee, and that's assuming he actually becomes a star and remains one over the long haul. He'll be a free agent at age 29.
Laika Community Moderator Posted January 2, 2020 Posted January 2, 2020 Any deal that has a prospect with star/superstar upside giving up a free agency year is prima facie a bad deal for the player and this one is no exception. This specific deal could swing either way, of course, but on the balance these extensions will work out in favour of the teams.

He's giving up some potential earnings in order to set himself up for life. If he does become a superstar, he's still going to get paid a crap load when he becomes a free agent. If he crashes and burns, he can retire before he's even 30. IMO, more prospects should be looking to do this type of deal.

I would say that I guess he's avoiding absolute ruin and that's a good thing, but Robert's signing bonus was $26M so he has already avoided absolute ruin. He should be "absolute ruin proof" - unless the money is gone. He can already retire if he doesn't like baseball. Delaying free agency by even a year can have a gigantic impact.

I forgot he had gotten that large a signing bonus. Still, I think it's a smart decision. The only way he realistically loses much is if he becomes a star, in which case his next contract is going to be massive anyway. Raise the floor early, go for ceiling later imo.
Ray Verified Member Posted January 2, 2020 Posted January 2, 2020 This just puts into perspective how absolutely awful that Albies extension was.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted January 2, 2020 Posted January 2, 2020 This just puts into perspective how absolutely awful that Albies extension was. He got $10M more than Eloy too. And almost $40M more than Tim Anderson (Which I at least understand) Maybe "bad" isn't the ideal word. I would say that I guess he's avoiding absolute ruin and that's a good thing, but Robert's signing bonus was $26M so he has already avoided absolute ruin. He should be "absolute ruin proof" - unless the money is gone. He can already retire if he doesn't like baseball. so he has $1M left? Buscones, agents, citizenship...sounds like a $25M price tag to me. White Sox invested $52M in that bonus after the penalties. I completely understand why they are doing it. A lot could go wrong now and they still could be the new Astros by 2021
