I like this signing a lot, sorely needed win for Shatkins. But, hope they are still pursuing another tier 3-4 pitcher.

Roark is a decent 3-4 spot pitcher but we need a strong #2 behind Ryu or even a #1 in front of Ryu before this team is back to playoff contention. I don't feel like Price is the right guy any more, he's really struggled in Boston. But it's clear whoever it is will have to come via trade.

Anyway, this is encouraging because obviously they feel like they are close to contention. The Yankees are going to be back to being ridiculous again with the lineup and staff they've got but the wildcard is definitely within reach. Maybe they can see how they're doing and make a trade around the deadline if they're within reach, and if not then next winter they can make a big splash or two and really get us there.

Shoemaker would have to pitch like he did to start last season before his injury and slot in as a #2...could happen.

This is interesting, I wonder how much extra cash Rogers pockets from this... Interesting bit that hadn't occurred to me.

teams can get their own sponsorship deals but all international broadcasting revenue goes to MLB from what I read.

This move will definitely greatly increase the amount of support for the Jays in Korea, which until now I’m sad to say have been more or less nonexistent; in the MLB store over there, it’s just filled with LAD/NYY/PIT/TEX/STL while all other teams merchandise are nowhere to be seen (Even when we had Oh for a bit we were still overlooked). If anything, we had been somewhat despised over there because we knocked out the Rangers (Choo) two years in a row as well as the Orioles (Kim) in recent times. Since Ryu’s by far the most popular player over there out of all Korean MLB’ers, with thousands of dedicated fans staying up overnight just to catch the games, I’m sure our exposure will increase tenfold. Of course, probably 90% of these are plastic, nationalistic fans that will attack and curse at anyone making an error/blowing a hold/save on a Ryu start (I fear for Vladdy in particular) and then immediately drop support once he is out of the picture, but there will always be a few left over at the end that will develop some attachment and continue to follow the team, which would be great.

Broadcasting wise, the priority over there will likely go: Jays on Ryu starts > Cards on Kim starts > Jays on non-Ryu starts > Rangers/Choo > Cards on non-Kim starts > Rays/Choi (he’s not liked over there due to history of PED use).

So you’re worried that Ryu will suck?

Okay. Funny, but okay. Zero evidence to support the idea that he’s not good.

Not zero: ERA predictors weren’t quite as impressed (3.10 FIP, 3.32 xFIP, 3.77 SIERA) with Ryu’s performance, while his modest 90.6mph fastball finished in the bottom 11th percentile in both fastball velocity and spin rate.

4th year for a soon to be 33 year old is the overpay

Put your hand up if you think Ryu will be worth $20 million in the 4th year of this deal.

I am real happy we have a legit top of the rotation arm.

I am really happy a major FA chose us, changes the outlook for the team.

In no way do i think this will turn out well in the end. Too injury prone to project this positively. Hope I get proven wrong. It is only money. If this was the best FA they could get welcome to Toronto Mr Ryu.

Ryu surrendered the fewest walks per inning of all starters in the MLB. The guy has never relied on velocity. I think his stuff will age much better than the average pitchers stuff would. It all comes down to health. If he remains mostly healthy, I think his 4th year will be quite good.

I am so pumped re: this signing! I didn't think the Jays had a prayer.

Just reading some interviews and articles, it sounds like the Jays may still take a run at Price. I don't want to help the Red Sox on any level, but if we can grab him, and a great prospect (and of course, cash) I may do it. Dunno. It'd be tough.

Those are still really good numbers. If anything, they just prove that he's legit af. That 3.10 FIP put him 6th in the majors among all qualified starting pitchers, while the 3.32 xFIP was good enough for 8th.

The fastball, despite the lack of velocity and spin, was the 26th most valuable fastball among all major league starting pitchers in 2019. He tunnels his pitches with the best of them and so the fastball plays very well off of his changeup, which was the third most valuable changeup among all major league starting pitchers in 2019.

What I love about pitchers who are effective without throwing 100 mph is that they seem to age well.

This is Molly Knight. Nothing groundbreaking but a good summation:

It's a good take. It shows we're going to spend to win, we will take risks, and that we *want* to win and not just make a profit for Rogers. And that is fair, 2.5 years of effective pitching. Given his injuries. But that 2.5 years will be glorious. I know a lot of you hate "Shatkins", but I continue to respect and appreciate the way they are building this team. And I hope Shapiro/Atkins are extended.

Wow it took you all day to find that information and copy/paste it verbatim from MLBTR.

Also, those ERA estimator figures are all really, really f***ing good.

And he throws various fastballs so the spin rate information is not informative. Typically pitchers want less spin on sinkers.

They'd have to eat a s*** ton of salary, and the talent going back would have to be B-level, for me to be onboard. Price is not what he used to be. Giving up meaningful talent and getting stuck with a hefty Price tag (pun intended) is not on my priority list.

3.32 xFIP is elite.

I would eat all his salary if we get a ton of extras. Prospects or whatever. I would eat full salary for Price+Benintendi for example. We'd have to give up 1-2 prospects, but whatever. Benintendi really, really intrigues me. He and Gurriel Jr., Grichuk and Hernandez in the OF would be pretty okay.

I am just spitballing. Don't #hate

Shut the f*** up you moron. Jesus some of you just want to whine over everything.

First off you are way too emotional, and rude on top of that.

This reminds me of RA Dickey, he just won the Cy Young in the NL, not just a runner up. Then he fnnn sucked!

At least in this case no prospect capital, just money, so really no downside.

A lot of you guys remind me of a guy who could never get the playboy playmate type girlfriend... Then you find out her boyfriend dumped her and you are thinking WTF why would any dude dump her, she is so HOT and I would give my left nut to be with her.

The fact of the matter is the other guy was tired of f***ing her, she started becoming a dead fish in bed and he was moving on to better, younger and hotter chicks.

I have real concerns when a pitcher is so good the other big money teams are not competing for him with anymore than a mmm whatever... There was no compensation pick and if no warning signs why???

Listen at the end of the day, not really any negatives since only $$ and we are in a good situation dollar wise.

The only negative is he sucks but is not injured and we keep on putting him out there because the PR optics of that much $$ and not playing him is not good, while we have young pitchers in our system who don't get a spot.

I hope he works out. I think he will be about like Dickey.

I am just not jizzing over him... I was hoping we would get better via trade... Still do..

Wish I had him on my Fantasy team, according to a lot of you I could trade him for a goldmine.

Was driving all day, saw it this AM. Not claiming it to be my own. The point is your hyperbole that there is zero evidence is just that.

Plus this...

On the plus side of the Statcast coin, Ryu was also one of the league’s best pitchers in limiting hard-hit balls and exit velocity, and his .263 wOBA was only slightly lower than his .281 xwOBA. Despite the lack of fastball velocity, Ryu still had the 26th most effective heater of any qualified pitcher in the sport according to Fangraphs’ Pitch Value metrics, while his changeup was one of the ten most effective pitches in all of baseball in 2019.

There is no evidence that he will suck. That's not hyperbole. He doesn't have any red flags, injury aside. He has never thrown hard.

You can cherry-pick sub-optimal things about every pitcher, it doesn't mean that those things are evidence that they will suck.

He might suck, sure. Anything can happen. We could say that about any pitcher. He could get mildly hurt and suck, who knows.

The irony...

I don’t think I am rude to anyone on here about baseball related takes.

When you are having a debate about a FA signing does it really require that?

Maybe in the politics thread...

I said the same thing about the Dickey trade in 2012 when I was a frequent poster on Scout.

Heard same s***. Knuckleballers age well, etc, took a lot of abuse for a contrary opinion.

Like I said, no prospect capital so nothing wrong with the upside. Just personally don’t think it will work out like we hope.
