Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2019 Posted December 27, 2019 I’m still waiting for the other shoe to drop. The Ryu deal on its own just doesn’t make any sense to me.

What are you thinking? Another SP, like a Price (would surprise me), or some of our middling young guys getting shipped out for something?

Honestly if we could get Price on 60% of his salary I think that’s something you have to explore. But it seems like it was one or the other between Price or Ryu. Whether it’s another impact position player or just another starter through trade I’m thinking something has got to go down. The bullpen hasn’t really been addressed either. Tons of spots to fill. Maybe they go for cheap options per usual. Shaw needs a platoon partner and Tellez as the Everyday DH doesn’t excite anybody. Arguably should be fighting for spot not handed one. He still has an option as well.

Tying up $40 million a season in two oft injured pitchers doesn't seem to be a good use of the likely limited financial resources that are available at this time given the more pressing needs on the roster. Combined over the last 3 years Ryu and Price have only pitched an average of 249 innings per season, and I don't see how you can reasonably expect that to necessarily get better as these guys keep getting older. Adding Price nets maybe 1.5-2 wins in the most optimistic scenario, surely he makes more sense for the Angels or somebody else at this juncture.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2019 Posted December 27, 2019 I don’t really see how Price makes sense at this point. The depth chart has like 10 interesting guys as it stands. There is no reason to blow any sort of financial muscle the team has just to add for the sake of it. The Price rumour was a shot at Boras to make up his mind. We will move on if you don’t like our offer. An alpha move from a beta. If this team can prove they’re on the cusp of contention this year next year should see the front office being even more aggressive in free agency. Betts, Springer, Bauer, Paxton, etc. No need to tie up 20M to Price just because they can.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 27, 2019 Posted December 27, 2019 I think they were only interested in Price if they couldn't sign a high level starter via free agency. I don't see them making that trade now. If they're trading for anyone I would prefer Clevinger or a quality CF

Could be a bridge piece for the next few years. You don't actually have to have all your chips pushed in every year.
DigitalRock Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2019 Posted December 27, 2019 Maybe they are open on Boxing day... Seek help man. https://a1counselling.com/ Says the guy who posts dumb s*** and doubles down....ryu might suck guys....the world might end tomorrow too. There is ZERO indication Ryu will suck. Posting insults won't bother me bro I dont care what some random clown online says, nor does it make the stupid s*** you posted any better. Take the L and move on

I wouldn't close the door on Price, but there's really no way of knowing if Boston would eat 25% of his salary 40% or 60% and what they might want in return depending on the salary amounts they were willing to cover.

If they're trading for anyone I would prefer Clevinger or a quality CF A Clevinger trade starts with Pearson and either SWR or Pardinho and likely another piece. Are you really willing to make that trade? I typicall am a proponent of trading prospects, but Clevinger would cost too much even for me.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 27, 2019 Posted December 27, 2019 keep in mind that the Jays still project to be 13+ games behind 3rd place in the division. Moves have to make sense for 2021 first and foremost.
DigitalRock Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2019 Posted December 27, 2019 Price would only be worth it if the Sox ate a lot of Salary....and I don't see them willing to pay that much. There are better avenues to improve the team.

We might see some incremental improvement the rest of the off season but I wouldn’t expect anything major.

TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 27, 2019 Posted December 27, 2019 Rosie Dimanno, you do not have to state that your question won't be sports related...we already know!
SaskJaysFan_2 Verified Member Posted December 27, 2019 Posted December 27, 2019 Same. I wish they would. We have too many middling (or below middling) OF on this roster
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2019 Posted December 27, 2019 You are the sober version of drunk Spanky, except I actually like Spanky and he contributes baseball related content. It is Christmas, we are supposed to spread goodwill and cheer. Merry Christmas! WTF?.... your take is completely wrong man, Ryu's a top ten pitcher in baseball and you provided the very statistics that support it, not to mention his statcast numbers are elite. For the 3rd time in this thread... On the plus side of the Statcast coin, Ryu was also one of the league’s best pitchers in limiting hard-hit balls and exit velocity, and his .263 wOBA was only slightly lower than his .281 xwOBA. Despite the lack of fastball velocity, Ryu still had the 26th most effective heater of any qualified pitcher in the sport according to Fangraphs’ Pitch Value metrics, while his changeup was one of the ten most effective pitches in all of baseball in 2019. Don't put me to the likes of that, clown. Again, you're quite wrong sir, Merry Christmas.
Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2019 Posted December 27, 2019 I still think they take a risk on a high reward OF'er this year. The latest reports on Puig made it sound like he might not have much of a market, could be a good opportunity. Castellanos is a legit middle of the order bat in his prime still sitting out there.
P2F Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2019 Posted December 27, 2019 God, Rosie DiManno is so f***ing cringey.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2019 Posted December 27, 2019 I still think they take a risk on a high reward OF'er this year. So one of Ozuna or Castellanos? I think Ozuna fits what Atkins usually targets in hitters but the QO is an obstacle. Cast seems more realistic, especially if his market is not great due to his horrid defence.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2019 Posted December 27, 2019 "Ryu, how do you feel being a junkballer and how are you still able to be good at baseball?" Fantastic question that, really glad they asked it.

It's a good fit, especially if a couple of club options are tacked on

glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2019 Posted December 27, 2019 One more question from Rosie and Ryu is going to wonder how quickly he can void his contract.
