Chappy Community Moderator Posted December 23, 2019 Posted December 23, 2019 The bench is proving its is deeper than it should be. I wouldn’t be surprised at us trading some Youth for another expiring contract. We clearly need another capable big.
Ray Verified Member Posted December 23, 2019 Posted December 23, 2019 The 40-man is full now, and the most obvious dead weight is the out of options bench players (Urena, Valera, and to a lesser extent Alford). I’d like to see the acquisition of MLB caliber players that push these guys out. A legit super utility guy who can play short and another MLB OF would fit very well. Brock Holt would be a nice addition. Sign Cesar Hernandez and blast Urena into the sun
Sharpey Verified Member Posted December 23, 2019 Posted December 23, 2019 Here are the aces Ryu has dueled against and beat this year alone: Madison Bumgarner, Zach Greinke, Max Fried, Chris Archer, Stephen Strasburg and David Price. Max Sherzer was gonna pitch against Ryu but he chickened out at the last minute. Anibal Sanchez got crushed that day instead. Ryu also pitched against DeGrom and they both pitched outstanding and was a tie.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2019 Posted December 23, 2019 I think it’s time I admit I’m heavily intoxicated. I was at the raptors game. I tried to make a joke that made sense in my intoxicated state. I was refereeing to street fighter. I know you are wise and was hoping you would catch on. At this point my only option is to dabble in the crown Apple...and my giant bag of m&m’s lol... Gotcha!
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2019 Posted December 23, 2019 this forum deserves a winner, im happy for you guys. Wow... Stranger? lol

Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2019 Posted December 23, 2019 Give me a OF next, Castellanos or Ozuna I don't think we need to make a long term commitment in the outfield just yet. The situation in the rotation forced us to take some bold action, but I'd prefer to save the rest of the long term dollars for another day. Just sign EE and see what our young guys can do in the outfield.
P2F Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2019 Posted December 23, 2019 I'm pretty sure this signing increases the projected win total to ~81. Plus whatever Yamaguchi brings to the table. Sign Cesar Hernandez, Dellin Betances, and one of Collin McHugh/Alex Wood/Taijuan Walker/Jimmer Nelson and basically stick a fork in the offseason.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2019 Posted December 23, 2019 (edited) A very good offseason so far. Every move has been good value and leaves room for further acquisitions now or during season. Should expect 1 or 2 bullpen pieces and if price is reasonable, I would not be surprised if both EE and Castellanos are signed. Edited December 23, 2019 by Jimcanuck

JaysAllMighty Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2019 Posted December 23, 2019 Excellent news to wake up to. 2020 will be more fun to watch this year.
Key22 Verified Member Posted December 23, 2019 Posted December 23, 2019 Signing Edwin might bring the casuals back and a near .850 OPS 35 homer bat is what you want from the DH spot. $10m to $12m/2.
Sharpey Verified Member Posted December 23, 2019 Posted December 23, 2019 Scherzer fears Ryu. Atkins got a steal. Lol, I am pretty sure.
Maico450 Verified Member Posted December 23, 2019 Posted December 23, 2019 Wow, Great news to wake up to. I never thought we would make a deal with Boras. Maybe he has learned his lesson after last years Keuchel fiasco. Really need some relievers signed now. I can live with the rest. Hudson on a 2 year deal?
JaysAllMighty Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2019 Posted December 23, 2019 Lol, I am pretty sure. Martin having fun catching him.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2019 Posted December 23, 2019 Wow I had a feeling the Jays had a good offer since Heyman kept tweeting about it but didn’t think Ryu would actually sign. I think 4/80 is one year too long but that’s what free agency is. You overpay to get a player. They targeted Ryu and got him. No one can say Atkins is passive anymore.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2019 Posted December 23, 2019 Damn, Jays sign Ryu less than 24 hours after the interest in David Price is leaked. Atkins has grown up before our eyes.
JaysAllMighty Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2019 Posted December 23, 2019 Damn, Jays sign Ryu less than 24 hours after the interest in David Price is leaked. Atkins has grown up before our eyes. So is David Price still in play for us?
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2019 Posted December 23, 2019 Hate to be Debbie Downer, but the fact Friedman (very smart) didn’t make a push to sign him after losing out on MadBum, Cole, Strasburg etc. LA had hometown advantage, the Coliseum is a pitchers park with cavernous OF. I could be wrong and we outbid the Dodgers with $ and the city etc. However, my spider senses are telling me a very smart baseball FO passed for a reason. Either, medical, analytics they are seeing.. I just don’t get it....? Also, a NL west pitcher coming to AL East there is normally regression. Apart from that, I am happy
Laika Community Moderator Posted December 23, 2019 Posted December 23, 2019 So is David Price still in play for us? Probably never really was. Seems like Toronto wanted to just signal to Boras/Ryu that they needed to piss or get off the pot.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2019 Posted December 23, 2019 So is David Price still in play for us? He may have never been in play. Might have just been the Jays way of forcing a decision out of Boras/Ryu, and it worked pretty quickly.

It's all right there on the open. He is a big injury risk, kind of in the same realm as Josh Johnson before he became a Blue Jay. Arguably the Dodgers have enough talented SP depth that risking money with Ryu just does not make sense for them in particular. They also aren't perfect. Friedman traded Yordan Alvarez for Josh Fields, right.
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2019 Posted December 23, 2019 4/$80 was what I thought it was going to take to get him, it's a bit too much AAV and a year too long, but it was always going to take us doing that, so I'm happy w/ the move.
Maico450 Verified Member Posted December 23, 2019 Posted December 23, 2019 Obviously the key to this whole signing is going to be keeping Ryu healthy. I am not sure that there IS a way to ensure this, but I guess a strict pitch count will be a start.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2019 Posted December 23, 2019 Largest contracts to a free agent, #BlueJays history Russell Martin 2015 5-Years / $82 M Hyun-Jin Ryu 2019 4-Years / $80 M A.J. The Jays aren't a desired team to play for because, Canada. So in order to lure free agents here the Front Office has to pay a premium in $$ and/or years on top of what said player would've received in an offer from their desired team/ best offer.

If they are willing to give Ryu 4/80 coming off a 95 loss season, I would imagine they will spend in a very healthy/normal way once the team is very competitive. It's all good. I mean they've run a top 10 MLB payroll very recently and in the WS years they were at the top of the league. Payroll is really not a concern to me. Free Agent attraction is a separate, semi-related matter. Leave it to you to post something like this today though, lol.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2019 Posted December 23, 2019 How many of them worked out? Off the top of my head, only the BJ Ryan contract did not return surplus value.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2019 Posted December 23, 2019 How many of them worked out? The Martin contract worked out fine. Ryu is such a brilliant signing. It's so important to have that linchpin going into next year's off season. I am truly shocked and pleased with this signing.
