Slade Old-Timey Member Posted July 10, 2018 Posted July 10, 2018 Cubs guys say we were looking at David Bote, Mark Zagurski and Tseng. Edit: Sorry, Zagunis not Zagurski. Source? That's a horrid return.
Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted July 10, 2018 Posted July 10, 2018 (edited) Cubs guys say we were looking at David Bote, Mark Zagurski and Tseng. Edit: Sorry, Zagunis not Zagurski. The Cubs farm is mostly garbage so I can't imagine not being underwhelmed by the return if they acquire Happ. Even then I'd say that's a very ambitious suggestion by the Cubs guys. No one from the top 10 of a farm system like that? Obviously kidding themselves. I'd say the Cubs lack both a high end quality prospect, and also the depth of quality required to beat out other teams for Happ. Perhaps if they packaged together of one their two arms from last year's first round, plus an interesting lottery ticket (Lange/Little + Amaya) maybe that beats out the Yankees/Brewers etc, but those teams seem to have way more to offer. glory Old-Timey Member Posted July 10, 2018 Posted July 10, 2018 I’m curious what other teams are offering. Yankees no doubt willing to give up McKinney, but the other piece(s) would have to be worthwhile. That Cubs offer is ass. The Braves have a deep system and the Brewers have an outfield glut where the Jays could swoop in and get something undervalued. Really hope Happ does not s*** the bed against Boston.
P2F Old-Timey Member Posted July 10, 2018 Posted July 10, 2018 Miguel Amaya, please. Throw in Aramis Ademan and I'm stoked with that return. Wishful thinking, I'm sure.

It's hard to think hat other teams might be offering, depends alot on whether they see Happ as a guy they will be using in the playoffs or not I think. Also probably greatly depends on what the market for DeGrom shapes up to given he's the best arm available and Happ isn't near his level.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted July 10, 2018 Posted July 10, 2018 They really love their Bote in Iowa... And people those were the players the Jays were scouting in Iowa. The Cubs have more minor leaguers than that.

Happ's start against the Red Sox is critical in his return price. I mean having 3 bad starts in a row would be disastrous in itself. But if the Yankees want him hes gotta prove he can pitch against the team they are competing with. I can definitely see trading Steve Pearce to the Red Sox early will ultimately f*** us over in the end lol. I can already picture the Grand Slam.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted July 10, 2018 Posted July 10, 2018 I kinda think I'd be inclined to say pass. I'd expect someone would cough up something more enticing. Bote would be an interesting return for Estrada perhaps, but not so much for Happ imo. That's with the caveat that I'm not sure who Zagurski is. Maybe it is a return for Estrada?
glory Old-Timey Member Posted July 10, 2018 Posted July 10, 2018 Really hope Happ doesn’t get destroyed by Boston this week.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted July 10, 2018 Posted July 10, 2018 Really hope Happ doesn’t get destroyed by Boston this week. He'll go 6, give up 6-7 hits, 4 runs, 3 walks, 7k's. Not an atrocity, but nothing to raise his value.
FrozenRopes Verified Member Posted July 10, 2018 Posted July 10, 2018 Packaging Happ with Donaldson for an elite prospect isn't a crazy idea, but on planet Earth, Juan Soto is untouchable. Acuna?
P2F Old-Timey Member Posted July 11, 2018 Posted July 11, 2018 Relevant excerpt: The Yankees, a month before the trade deadline, are unequivocally in the hunt for another starting pitcher. “If we stay with what we have it’ll be because we didn’t think the price tags were appropriate,” Brian Cashman said on the field at Yankee Stadium an hour and a half before his team took the field to play the Red Sox in their pivotal three-game series. Cashman said the Yankees’ plan at the deadline is still to acquire another starting pitcher, noting that “we have our troops scattered on a daily basis from analytics to pro scouting with our targets and assessments.” Currently, the Yankees rotation as it stands now consists of Luis Severino, CC Sabathia, Sonny Gray, Domingo Gérman and the soon-to-return Masahiro Tanaka.
MarcoSanchez Verified Member Posted July 11, 2018 Posted July 11, 2018 Would they do German for Happ?
glory Old-Timey Member Posted July 11, 2018 Posted July 11, 2018 The only way to get a good deal out of Cashman is to get someone really far away from the bigs (not enough data to know what you have yet) and hope they pan out later. Someone like Medina, but even that is doubtful for a rental. Cashman has to be desperate and he has no reason to be for Happ.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted July 11, 2018 Posted July 11, 2018 Cashman has to be desperate and he has no reason to be for Happ. He actually does have reason to be desperate, AND for that target to be Happ if none of the other potential starters end up on the market. One of Boston or the Yankees are going to be playing a one-and-done playoff game. Playoff shares for the teams, especially the deeper you go, are worth quite a bit - and that's not including whatever profit YES and other ballpark stuff not included in the revenue sharing generates from the games.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted July 11, 2018 Posted July 11, 2018 Damn, Brian Cashman has been the Yankees GM for 20 years. For a team like the Yanks in a city like New York, it's pretty damn impressive that he's managed to stay on for that long.

It's unfortunate that there's a decent chance we will deal with him and not a lesser GM.

But they have a young roster, that figures to get younger next year when they replace Gardner with Frazier and probably add Sheffield to the rotation mix. It's not like they are AA's Jays in 2015 that were hanging on to their playoff window for dear life and needed to do something before an inevitable rebuild. The Yankees don't need to do anything desperate. They can risk the WC this year, keep their assets in case someone better becomes available in the winter, and go for the division for the next five years. Look at the prospects he gave up for 2.5 years of Sonny Gray. Basically three prospects on the back end of the top 100 prospects list. In this case we are talking 2 months of Happ. He's probably offering Billy McKinney and some others he doesn't want to put on the 40 man at the end of the season.

Yep, its almost worth it not to make the deal with them. He is really good and wont offer much. Better off waiting on the back end and seeing if a National League team offers anything of value. I feel like the NL races are tightening up, Colorado is run by a pretty crappy front office, maybe they can give up one of their failed pitchers like Gray. Lets hope Gray has a crappy ERA in AAA.

Gray struggled with command in his most recent AAA start and the report said not to expect to see him back with the big club any time soon.

This makes sense, as his 21.8 K-BB% at the major-league level was just not cutting it, nor was it indicative in any way of his true skill. Maybe one day he'll learn how to improve on his ERA in Colorado. Until then, he's nothing to get excited about.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted July 11, 2018 Posted July 11, 2018 Selling off some vets and then trading for Jon Gray at the same time would be so awesome.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted July 11, 2018 Posted July 11, 2018 Selling off some vets and then trading for Jon Gray at the same time would be so awesome. That man needs to escape Coors Field so badly. He was on pace to strike out 200+ easily this year but have an ERA approach 6 with an excellent straight out to walk ratio. He would be pitching well... dominating even than a couple bloops happen and he gives up that back breaking Coors Field Homerun.

MarcoSanchez Verified Member Posted July 11, 2018 Posted July 11, 2018 I would flip Stroman straight up for Gray. Rockies were High on Stroman, they still might be, throw in Pillar if you want. Heck throw in Happ Gray is 2013 Jake Arrieta.
