Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted June 18, 2018 Posted June 18, 2018 J.A. Happ - S - Blue Jays According to Jon Morosi of MLB Network, the Yankees and Mariners are both expressing interest in Blue Jays starter J.A. Happ. The Blue Jays are coming off a surprising three-game sweep of the Nationals, but they're buried in fourth place in the American League East standings and are likely to launch into selling mode within the next several weeks, ahead of the July 31 deadline. Happ has seemingly emerged as Toronto's most valuable trade chip with Josh Donaldson battling health issues. The veteran left-hander holds a 3.48 ERA, 1.065 WHIP, and 94/25 K/BB ratio in 82 2/3 innings (14 starts) this season. He's making $13 million in the final year of a three-year, $36 million deal.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted June 18, 2018 Author Posted June 18, 2018 The hot stove is heating up and it looks like their will be plenty of suitors for Happ. Neither team has an elite prospect to trade, not that Happ would return an elite prospect. However, asking for Clint Frazier or Kyle Lewis might be a good starting point given the desperate need both teams have for reliable starting pitching.

Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted June 18, 2018 Author Posted June 18, 2018 Happ + Donaldson + All of our reliever FAs, + Anyone not named Vlad or Bo for Juan Soto I WANT TO BELEAF Packaging Happ with Donaldson for an elite prospect isn't a crazy idea, but on planet Earth, Juan Soto is untouchable.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted June 18, 2018 Posted June 18, 2018 I have to think Clint Frasier is the ceiling for what we'd get for Happ. Kyle Lewis is more likely. Although he has the pedigree, he's 22 and in high A ball striking out 5 times more than he walks. He certainly looks like that knee injury set him back big time. The M's farm system is awful. I'd attempt a back flip if we got Frasier for Happ.
MarcoSanchez Verified Member Posted June 18, 2018 Posted June 18, 2018 Mariners farm system is disgusting, I would really enjoy them self combusting into a .500 team and opening up the second wild card
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted June 18, 2018 Posted June 18, 2018 Billy McKinney + Luis Medina seems pretty fair for a couple months of Happ.
THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted June 18, 2018 Posted June 18, 2018 If we could pull off a Frasier return, I'd be pleased with that.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted June 18, 2018 Posted June 18, 2018 Frazier godammit! And that would be a pipe dream, you never know I guess. I'd be ecstatic with that type of return.
MarcoSanchez Verified Member Posted June 18, 2018 Posted June 18, 2018 Would you give the Yankees Donaldson + Happ for Frazier?
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted June 18, 2018 Author Posted June 18, 2018 Would you give the Yankees Donaldson + Happ for Frazier? If it came down to it, yes, but the Yankees don't really have a spot to play Donaldson, and most likely we could get a better return shopping them separately.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted June 18, 2018 Posted June 18, 2018 Frazier would be awesome, but can't see Cashman moving him for a rental.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted June 18, 2018 Author Posted June 18, 2018 Frazier would be awesome, but can't see Cashman moving him for a rental. I could see us adding something like Pillar as a deal sweetener. He's an ideal 4th OF who can play CF and get some PR opportunities.

He's an ideal 4th OF who can play CF and get some PR opportunities. Or even one of our B prospects. To not look so one-sided. We'd have Frazier until 2024. Man that would be awesome. Can Grichuk handle CF though? It could be Alford Jr. time. Finally. Hernandez, Alford Jr., Grichuk and Frazier would make for a sweet, sweet young OF.

L54 Old-Timey Member Posted June 18, 2018 Posted June 18, 2018 I doubt the Yankees have any interest in Pillar with Gardner and Hicks there.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted June 18, 2018 Posted June 18, 2018 Mariners have literally nothing of interest. Kyle Lewis is interesting.
P2F Old-Timey Member Posted June 18, 2018 Posted June 18, 2018 Evan White, Sam Carlson, and Kyle Lewis are about it. And then as secondary pieces, guys like Braden Bishop, Matt Festa, and Julio Rodriguez are interesting too. We would probably do well to get one from each grouping above, though the Mariners do not make for a great trade partner.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted June 18, 2018 Posted June 18, 2018 The Yankees don't really have needs aside from the rotation so not sure what the Jays can add as sweetener to get Frazier other than prospects, and i'm sure Shatkins would rather not subtract from the farm at the deadline. I want nothing to do with Seattle's farm system.
Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted June 18, 2018 Posted June 18, 2018 Weren't the Yankees unwilling to move their top position prospects to land multiple years of Cole? If I'm remembering that correctly, it would be tough to picture them turning around and moving one for Happ. They do have some very nice pitching in the upper minors though. Abreu + Adams + lottery ticket would be a solid offer.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted June 18, 2018 Posted June 18, 2018 I feel like the Yankees will move Frazier, but for Happ is a pipe dream. He could centrepiece a deal for a controllable starter, not a rental.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted June 18, 2018 Posted June 18, 2018 I remember when I brought up Happ bringing back more in a trade people laughed at the notion. Now it looks more than likely.

It would probably take an injury to one of their starters - and he's probably have to be drunk. I'd give up JD and Happ in a heartbeat for Frasier. Bird will probably be hurt by then and JD can slide into 1st for them.

Abreu + Adams + lottery ticket would be a solid offer. I remember hearing that they wouldn't part with Torres or Andujar, but were willing to move Frazier. That was for Cole obviously, not for a 2 month rental. I think they will move Frazier eventually, but for Happ is a huge long shot.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted June 18, 2018 Posted June 18, 2018 Are you guys huffing glue, the Yankees traded Aroldis Chapman to the Cubs for Gleyber Torres, Billy McKinney, Rashad Crawford and Adam Warren for a rental closer. And you think an SP in JA Happ and Josh Donaldson would only return Frazier? lol

The Astros didn't give up as much as the Cubs to get multiple years of G.Cole.

And you think an SP in JA Happ and Josh Donaldson would only return Frazier? lol Yes. Because this is the Blue Jays. And Chapman is sexy whereas Happ isn't. Star factor means something. If Donaldson was healthy and on his game then I really do think the Jays could get a real nice haul, but that's not what we're working with. I relish the opportunity to be wrong in this case. We have 1-2 months to wait and see.
