West Texas Forever Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 Why the f*** was this just not made into a 1/18.5 deal? http://www.theskinnyc.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/jay-z.jpg
King Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 How is this team "semi" competitive? The Jays have made the ALCS in consecutive seasons and were favoured to win both times. He's talking about going forward. They project to win 84 games. They could be in the wild card mix but are definitely a tier or two below the Cubs, Red Sox, Dodgers etc.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 Why the f*** was this just not made into a 1/18.5 deal? Optics.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 I wonder if somebody forgot to tell Bautista's camp that the Rogers Center can't actually sell 4 million tickets in a season anymore.

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 There seems to be so much unneeded fluff in the contract. Like why even spend the time to have these mutual options and bonuses when its clear both sides aren't going to pick up the option.
TholesWeirdEye Verified Member Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 lol Bautista also has attendance bonuses. 150K for 3.5M, 3.6M, 3.7M, 3.8M, 3.9M, 4M attendance. 900K per yer possible. #jays wtf
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 hahaha ok Edwin got an attendance bonus, so Bautista wanted one too LMAO

Like why even spend the time to have these mutual options and bonuses when its clear both sides aren't going to pick up the option. Because it's Jose Bautista. There were so many unwashed casuals raging for months that the Jays weren't getting a deal done and it was apparent all along that Bautista was going to hustle till the last dime. Now that the details are out, we can see that he did exactly that. So much of this deal was about the optics and how he'd look that it makes me feel embarrassed as an outsider. I feel like the largest factor in this deal wasn't the Blue Jays or Jose Bautista as a player, but rather "how close can we make this look like Edwin Encarnacion's contract without actually paying him anything?"
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 According to Wikipedia: Baseball: 49,282 x 81 home games = 3,991,842 lol And I think they've reduced capacity since then Edit: Not sure... Most of the late September 2016 "sellouts" show between 47,000 and 48,000 However, the wildcard game shows 49,934 in attendance http://www.espn.com/mlb/team/schedule/_/name/tor/year/2016/seasontype/2 So they CAN fit almost 50k but don't always?
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 lol What's with this new trend? It's bizarre. Next he'll get $150K in bonuses if the Jays sell 4M hot dogs in a season.
intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 I wonder if somebody forgot to tell Bautista's camp that the Rogers Center can't actually sell 4 million tickets in a season anymore. Must include playoff games too. 150K really is comparably nothing compared to the rest of it, but if the team just pulls in people all year and gets some postseason home games in he'll get one more 150K lump. 3.5 million tickets sold is a stretch to begin with, though. Very possible he doesn't get any of these bonuses. If the team has one of its familiar slow starts, no chance for 3.5M.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 Jays were #3 in attendance in 2016 http://www.espn.com/mlb/attendance Nice
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 Jays were #3 in attendance in 2016 http://www.espn.com/mlb/attendance Nice #1 in the AL by a mile as well.

admin Site Manager Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 No one go to games this year, save Rogers $900k!
glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 The options in this deal were designed to impress the people who post comments on Sportsnet.ca (in other words people with an IQ in the negatives). I can't imagine either Bautista's camp or the Jays working these options out while holding a straight face. They should have added a 2020 option which get triggered if Bautista hits 300 home runs from 2017-19, just for shits and giggles.

Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 Good point, cheers to that. So basically he only hits his bonuses if we sell out every home game and make it to the World Series? lol
BTS Community Moderator Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 Optics. Is Bautista really petty enough that the optics of a potential 60M deal were important even though there's like a 99+% chance it's 1/18.5? It's ridiculous that they even spent time negotiating this silly contract beyond the 1/18.5 term.

The largest factor in making this deal is 100% Jose Bautista the player versus the remaining free agent options, don't kid yourself. If the deal was about optics they wouldn't have waited until January 2017 to sign Bautista, needless options and incentives aside. Sure maybe they added some fluff so it makes them look better to the public, but this signing is all about how Jose can help the Blue Jays in 2017 and possibly beyond.
