Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 Same was said about Fowler and his numbers took a complete 180 when he started to play deeper. I know... that's my point.
Patrick Verified Member Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 The contract details are in this new article. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/baseball/bautistas-jays-contract-includes-bonus-tied-to-rogers-centre-attendance/article33681599/ Some weird wording in the article makes it sound like he gets full salary for 2018 even if either side decides to move on in 2018. "Should either side decline the 2018 option, Bautista will receive a $500,000 buyout in addition to his $18-million base salary." I can't imagine that is correct.

They should have just said he'd receive 500K. He gets paid out his 2017 salary like everyone else. It's no longer relevant when/if he receives the buyout. This whole article needs a red marker tbh.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 I thought our Outfield defense positioning was suspect all year especially late in games. Balls were getting over everyone's head not just Bautista. With Pillar I understand. However this team doesn't seem interested in playing no doubles defense or when they do it's way to late. Cost us a few times last season. Just really weird positioning considering we are often fielding the worst corner OF defence imaginable. Even Melvin Upton looked worse.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 Bautista looked a lot better when he came back after the toe injury. He's slow now but he made some plays that made me think he wasn't a total waste out there. Or perhaps he just looked good compared to Saunders who is probably the worst OF I've seen in a Jays uniform since they put Lind there years ago.
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 According to Morosi Bautistas gonna be playing for the DR

I think he was legitimately the worst OFer I've ever seen in a Blue Jays uniform. I don't fault him for it either since he was basically a 1B playing the OF.

Colabello might be the worst outfielder we've ever seen, in any uniform. My god that guy sucks at baseball.

We've seen some fluctuation in Bautista's outfield play in the last two years. He's not nearly as bad when he's 100% but that's hard thing to appreciate when he 100% with decreasing frequency. Atkins alluded to this in the presser. "Most likely we'll see him in right field the bulk of our games. He had a shoulder injury in 2015 that impacted his ability to throw in '16 -- we actually spent some time with him this offseason and saw him working out, and seeing things that were extremely encouraging."

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 I think Hanley Ramirez would win the contest if we are talking about any one player. It wasn't even funny how bad he was in LF and he played half his games at Fenway.

I'm usually that way too but when you say it like "my god he sucks at baseball" thats making him sound like he's one of the worst players profesionally when he's not even that bad. He's an okay hitter even relative to MLB.

Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 His career WAR of between 0 and -1 suggests he's truly replacement level Actually that makes him below replacement level.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 Actually that makes him below replacement level. Technically yes but come on... someone with a career WAR of -0.7 or + 0.5 or whatever who isn't even a full win better or worse than replacement... It's close enough to call them that. Hardly anyone is going to be EXACTLY 0 WAR after multiple MLB seasons
glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 Bautista with a projected 130 wRC+. I could live with that.

KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 No, I'm saying replacement level is not 0 WAR. It's better than that. Quoted.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 Average is 2 WAR. Replacement level is 0.0 WAR, i.e. zero wins above replacement.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 Keith Law chat today: Ryan: Thoughts on the Bautista deal? Klaw: I’ve said there’s no such thing as a bad one year deal. That’s pretty much how I feel here. The Jays get to roll the dice on having Bautista get healthy and produce more than he did last year; if he does 2015 again, it’s a steal. Ryan: Would you rather Bautista at 1 year, $18m, or Trumbo at 3 years, $37m? Klaw: Bautista, easily.
