Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 Suzuki is f***ing terrible. I don't want him King, that's apparent. As is Hundley. I'm talking about playing time windows. We're better staying in-house and using that money on a better asset.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 Yup, Thole was dealt a bad deal following RA around, no repetitive games played, minimal action, that's really tough in the MLB. It made him some decent money, but not a chance to break through, if he could. I'm curious to see how things work out in Atlanta with whoever catches Dickey. It's either going to work out and I'll be pissed that we carried Thole all these years for no reason - or it's going to be a failure and AA/Shatkins is going to look smart. I'm shocked Atlanta hasn't signed Thole to a minor league deal yet.

If he had no major issues with it we wouldn't have carried Thole, I think it was the right decision in hindsight at least for us.
Governator Community Moderator Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 TODAY: The final guarantee is $18.5MM, Passan tweets. An official announcement is expected in short order.

Between the three we'd have the backup job and both AAA slots filled for roughly the same total price as Iannetta just went for.
Laika Community Moderator Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 It's demonstrably false unless the payroll rolls well over $165M

My point was we could have signed a better backup catcher years ago and let him catch Dickey...someone capable of starting more games to keep Russell fresh and as insurance in case of injury (in response to the "finally - we don't need to carry Thole anymore and can finally sign a solid backup catcher" movement).

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 Stupid question - Are you allowed to bring bottled of water in? I thought there was concern you'd chuck it on the field or something (not that you couldn't do that with the can of beer or whatever you buy once you're in there. Maybe I'm mixing this up with the airport, where they assume you're bottle of water is going to explode.

Governator Community Moderator Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 I guess it's not even worth discussing the vesting option requirements unless they somehow #cometogether and agree on the mutual option.
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 It's official. That is a weird structure... mutual option is lower than 2017 but the 2019 is worth more than 2017. I wonder how the 2019 vests, the way it's displayed it looks like if the 2018 offer is accepted then 2019 will vest, essentially the mutual option being resigning him for 2 years/$37M hmmm. Might be one of the few times a mutual option actually gets triggered but I still doubt we see that
CBlake Verified Member Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 Curious to see how the mutual optition works. Is it as simple as each side going yes or no on it and it kicks in if both say yes? It's official.
baseballsss Verified Member Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 So confused on what the actual end game is? They clearly didn't want to tear the team down and rebuild but they aren't going all in either. It's almost like Shapiro is gunna keep a semi competitive team and maybe hoard prospects through the draft? Anybody have a better idea on what the teams actually doing?

pickoff22 Verified Member Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 This is an interesting structure, if he has a monster year in 2017 he won't automatically decline his option since 2019 pays him 20 million at age 39 (and have to assume the criteria for vesting would be reached in 2018).

True but it's weird that way, imo I don't think Bautista will pick that option up if he has a season better than last season and the Jays probably won't pick it up if he has a season like last season... who knows
