In my opinion we have the potential to put together some damn good lineups, but I'm 100% sold that we need to sign Fowler to lead off.

Possibly, but with destinations dwindling and the pick attached, I would guess that's unlikely at this point.

 

I know it's hard to put oneself in Edwin's shoes, but turning down $80 million to play in a city that you love; where you have tremendous fan support; and where the team has been knocking on the door the last couple of seasons; it just seems like a regrettable misstep.

I think the writing is on the wall now as far as Edwin is concerned.

This doesn't necessarily close the door on Edwin, he can still split 1B/DH with Morales, with Pearce playong primarily OF.

Pearce has been quite a lot worse in the second halves in his career. Maybe that's partly due to all the injuries, maybe he just can't physically handle playing every day for whatever reason.

 

Regardless, this is an excellent signing at the price. Our bench right now has Pearce (1.5 WAR projection, could be higher), Upton (difficult to project, but likely 1 tp 1.5 WAR if used correctly and he hits more like he did in SD), and Barney (likely 1 to 1.5 WAR). Those are very valuable part time contributions for where we are on the curve.

 

Now if we could upgrade Upton to Dyson (we should have no problem trading Upton given he's basically free), we'd really be on to something with the bench.

 

Given the extra bat that kills lefties, I wonder if this is a prelude to possibly going after Moss? He's slightly above average defensively in the outfield, hits righties well, and probably comes at a reasonable price.

I think it's really unlikely we get Edwin back at this point. With the Upton/Carrera/Smoak pieces in play (where Smoak presumably gets actual playing time), I think if we can get Fowler, we're pretty much done on the offensive side, save for identifying who backs up Martin.

Idk I think rejecting a decent but at the time not spectacular offer that early in FA seems pretty reasonable to me. It's like BTS said, how serious were the Jays? Seems like they gave him a take it or leave it deal back when nobody was signing deals yet. That'd be tough for one of the top bats on the market to accept without at least mulling it over or seeing what other teams would be interested.

I think that is speculation due to the Pearce Signing but i agree that if the door isn't closed it is only open a pubic hair.
