Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 Guys, STEVE PEARCE is a blue jay
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 What's the catch? This seems awfully cheap.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 Praise SHATKINS you beautiful bastards
Iggy Verified Member Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 Pearce provides great flexibility ... last year in 83 games he played: 1st - 41 2nd - 15 O/F - 12 3rd - 2 D/H - 13
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 Given Pearce's ability to play multiple positions and his injury history it makes sense for the Jays to roster an extra 1B (Smoak). Shatkins likes Smoak so this allows them to upgrade on him while also finding a way to keep him on the roster (thus saving them a little bit of face). I think EE is gone and Smoak makes the team as a bench bat.

Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 so where is he going to play? Is he going to be the ultra platoon player and stay primarily in the OF corners? Not 1B? This doesn't necessarily mean Edwin is out, right? Platoon? He's a well above average hitter against RHP and LHP
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 How tits would this be? LF Fowler 3B Donaldson SS Tulowitzki 1B Encarnacion RF Pearce DH Morales C Martin 2B Travis CF Pillar

glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 f*** a platoon, Pearce can start at 1B. Justin Smoak can EAD.
BTS Community Moderator Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 Platoon? He's a well above average hitter against RHP and LHP Career 130 wRC+ vs. LHP and 100 vs. RHP. There's no reason to use him in a strict platoon, especially given that he's at least average defensively at 1st or a corner OF spot. Reminds me of Logan Forsythe and Justin Turner. Years wasted using them in platoon spots when it turned out that they were capable of 5-win seasons if played everyday.

BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 WOW that was quick! And cheap too!! Great news!!!! Cheap but still almost a Two million dollars raise for him! And one writer projected him to only earn a 2 mill a year deal ! Lol Welcome aboard the Jay Train.... Choo choo!
bzapple Verified Member Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 Good, this is good. Shapiro/Atkins are finding cost-efficient ways to maintain this roster as a contender. These are the kind of depth signings we didn't see from AA, who instead went for the big splash, high impact moves, with mixed results. Very no-panic offseason from the front office to this point. Assuming this closes the book on re-signing EE, this should leave room for acquiring a quality outfielder, and perhaps bringing back Bautista on a short term deal.

HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 how is he dumn there? He's stating the facts
Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 I proposed this idea with Bautista in mind but it absolutely works for Pearce as well. 1B - Pearce takes the majority of starts against LHP, Smoak and Morales split the starts against RHP. LF - Pearce against RHP (with Carerra taking the odd start), Upton vs LHP. DH - Majority of games to Morales but the 30+ starts he has at 1B allow for other vets to DH on off days (Martin, Tulo, Donaldson etc) I won't post an estimate of how many games they'd each play because last time I think it gave BBBB an ulcer.

UWHabs Verified Member Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 His stat is meaningless and his implication is stupid. Pearce has been a legit lefty masher for years. Edwin has actually generally been better against righties (3 year splits has him with an .871 vs LHP and .913 vs RHP). Pearce is still a massive downgrade against righties, and health is a legit concern. I don't want him playing a lot of OF, but he can easily fill in there and probably is a better fielder than JB or Saunders were last year. Smoak can get starts at 1B against tougher righties - hopefully Atkins can convince Gibby to not make Smoak as the primary starting 1B against righties, please. We still need an OF or 2, but a very solid deal for a guy who's been worth over 7 wins the last 3 years, despite the fact that he's never played more than 102 games in any season.
FrozenRopes Verified Member Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 I hope it works out but I have never liked Steve Pearce. I would rather have had Moreland. Replacing EE Homers by committee.

You really shouldnt have an issue with him out there
TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 And Ryan Goins should never have to start an important game at 2B ever again. That alone is worth it for me.
