ChrisS Verified Member Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 Yeah, all of those game winning homers and clutch hits were really turning my stomach as well. He is a Red Sox fan iirc.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 This doesn't necessarily close the door on Edwin, he can still split 1B/DH with Morales, with Pearce playong primarily OF. Lol there's zero chance he is resigning..
Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 Pearce has been quite a lot worse in the second halves in his career. Maybe that's partly due to all the injuries, maybe he just can't physically handle playing every day for whatever reason. Regardless, this is an excellent signing at the price. Our bench right now has Pearce (1.5 WAR projection, could be higher), Upton (difficult to project, but likely 1 tp 1.5 WAR if used correctly and he hits more like he did in SD), and Barney (likely 1 to 1.5 WAR). Those are very valuable part time contributions for where we are on the curve. Now if we could upgrade Upton to Dyson (we should have no problem trading Upton given he's basically free), we'd really be on to something with the bench. Given the extra bat that kills lefties, I wonder if this is a prelude to possibly going after Moss? He's slightly above average defensively in the outfield, hits righties well, and probably comes at a reasonable price. Right now? Pearce sure as heck wouldn't be part of our bench. The way things currently stand he would be a starter without question.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 Right now? Pearce sure as heck wouldn't be part of our bench. The way things currently stand he would be a starter without question. Okay, poor choice of words. Our bench IDEALLY has those three.
Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 Okay, poor choice of words. Our bench IDEALLY has those three. Fair enough, but we'd need to add three other starters to push Pearce to a bench role, I don't see it. He'll be seeing regular AB's.
CHRIS Verified Member Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 What do you think he gets then? No clue. 4/$68? 3/$55? I think Beltran and Holliday signing for 1 year, and Bautista still available for a shorter term deal hurts Edwin. I think the pick hurts Edwin. There's not even a loyalty/fan/history ("bring him home") factor out there for him other than Toronto. I'm not saying it was unreasonable for him to reject the offer necessarily; just seems like his agent miscalculated how the offseason would unfold for players of Edwin's ilk.

reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 When the Rays relied on him as an every day player, he put up a 150 wRC+. in how many ABs?
spats Verified Member Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 Vs RHP RF Fowler SS Tulo 3B Donaldson DH Morales LF Pearce C Martin 2B Travis 1B Smoak CF Pillar Vs LHP RF Fowler SS Tulo 3B Donaldson DH Morales 1B Pearce C Martin LF Upton CF Pillar In my opinion we have the potential to put together some damn good lineups, but I'm 100% sold that we need to sign Fowler to lead off. Jays were willing to give EE four years at $80...They probably can get Fowler at four and $70+. For that $80, they would have Fowler and Pearce. I think that makes them stronger.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 Back peddling? This makes me sad. I really wish Edwin would have just committed. No doubt his agent influenced the decision and if he doesn't deliver he royally f***ed Edwin. I mean to cone out of free agency with not your #1 choice and less money is an obvious firing.
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 Don't like this move. It's okay if he's a bench bat, but he hasn't had 400 PA in a season before and is 34. If he's relied upon to be an everyday player, that's Rays-esque... i.e. something a potential contender like the Jays shouldn't be doing. Say we signed Edwin for 20m'ish per. Where's the money coming from to cover off LF, RF and the 2 vacant BP spots with players you believe are good enough to fill there? Because I'm definitely not cool with running E.Car & Melvin Upton out as starters. And Pompey although young has his deficiencies. And good pen arms are gonna cost you 5m per each. Stop thinking we're the f***ing Yankees or Dodgers until the payroll gets to, and sits in that area.
SweetSmellingChacin Verified Member Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 Good signing. Now sign Fowler and put Smoak on a catapult.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 If we could trade Smoak I would forget about a lot of bad things.
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 Signed another injured player for 6/yr who maybe ready for spring training and more than likely around 100 + games? Potential is there but......FO going on the cheap again..... Would you rather they go expensive and then run some shitbags out in RF, LF & the 'pen? Or are you of the camp of rocketing the payroll to $170-180 and biting your tongue as an idiot fan about increased ticket prices while triple fisting $13 beers.

GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 Yeah, all of those game winning homers and clutch hits were really turning my stomach as well. Jose's OF defence has been turning my stomach since he became a Jay
CHRIS Verified Member Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 Can we shoot Smoak to the moon now? Pretty sure any spacecraft carrying Smoak wouldn't be able to handle the orbital curve required to get to the moon.
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 in how many ABs? Can't you look this stuff up? It takes literally 10 seconds
SweetSmellingChacin Verified Member Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 Can we shoot Smoak to the moon now? Smoak would miss the moon by a foot and then land back on the planet earth in the Jays dugout.
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 Fair enough, but we'd need to add three other starters to push Pearce to a bench role, I don't see it. He'll be seeing regular AB's. Yet the same time if it happened the off season would be a smashing success!
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 Fans are not idiots because they want to see more of an investment in the team. An investment should be in smart moves, not money moves. And the fans that don't understand that, are idiots.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 Shouldn't have to increase ticket prices to reach $170M. That is TEX/LAA territory. It's barely even top 5 in the AL. We are still a contender even without Bautista and EE, so it's even more justifiable to have a higher payroll. Our front office is extremely competent. More money can only improve the team. Fans are not idiots because they want to see more of an investment in the team. Canadian Dollar is a bit of a disadvantage even if not as much as its made to be. I'm fine with the payroll in the $160 range. Put additional $ into scouting, player development and sports science.
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 Can't you look this stuff up? It takes literally 10 seconds My point was that it was probably not that many!
