They have to fall out of contention and even then it will be tough to get the right deal for him. This is one of the most fickle (worst) baseball markets around. Attendance dropped again last year, despite a playoff season, and payroll going up by over $30M. Waving the white flag now would be disastrous for them financially. They own the majority of the TV rights to the Nats, but the percentage they own is dropping every year. I think they at least have to attempt to extend him this year.

Machado will make over 30 million per year in his next deal. I don't see Baltimore paying two guys close to a third of the payroll
