McCutchen, 30, is coming off his worst offensive season and a below-average one defensively, according to the advanced metrics. But his contract — $14 million next season, with a $14.5 million option for 2018 — remains appealing.

 

The Pirates believe that McCutchen rated as a poor defender last season in part because they played him too shallow, sources said. Dexter Fowler had a similar issue in 2015, and his metrics improved last season after the Cubs positioned him deeper.

Played some MLB the Show today and completed the first offseason in Franchise mode and simulated the two months so far of 2017. Just for fun.

 

Some key moves that I made during the offseason:

 

- Signed Charlie Morton to a 2 year deal.

 

- Signed Mike Napoli to a 1 year deal.

 

- Apparently Tex didn't retire in the game yet, so signed him to a cheap 1 year deal.

 

- QO on EE and Bautista. Bautista did accept the QO so I'm stuck with him. EE signed a 4 year deal with the Cubs lol.

 

- Traded JA Happ, Melvin Upton Jr and a decent prospect to the Angels for Kole Calhoun.

 

- Signed Justin Turner to a 2 year deal.

 

- Signed Jarrod Dyson to a 1 year deal.

 

- traded for Boone Logan (Rockies resigned him).

 

- signed Francisco Rodriguez to a cheap 1 year deal before ST.

I find the salary structure in that game to ruin franchise mode for me. The Salaries are way too low IMO. Also potential is so high that by year 4 or 5 there are way too many players over 90 OVL.

Yeah I wish they got salaries right when signing FA's during the offseason to make it more realistic. Hopefully its something they fix in next years version. You could sign a guy for next to nothing if they have a player rating under 85.

I remember Saunders having like 29 HR, 95 RBI and a 295/340/550 slash line and I resigned him for like 3 years at 3.2 Million/season.

It's nice that they have it and all, but really that game wasn't made for the franchise mode. I bet a large number of users who play franchise mode just run a fantasy draft or force trades to have some fun hitting with Trout, Bryant, and Harper in a row for a little bit. If you want a realistic, in-depth experience of managing a franchise then play OOTP.

How is this fun?

 

The RTTS and fantasy draft franchises are fun in short bursts. For a more realistic front office type thing OOTP is a lot better.

No he doesn't, 112 wRC+ against righties last year and 107 for his career who won't hurt you defensively. Would make a good platoon partner with Upton.

You're likely paying Pagan to be an everyday player, not a platoon piece.

 

I'd be fine with Pagan on a one year deal to man LF. I just don't see him being more than a one win player for much longer when his base running starts declining like his defense has and if that bat starts slipping at all, since he's basically league average, you can lose a lot more value really quickly.

Pagan holds his own vs. LHP too...he doesn't need a platoon partner, although at his age, it might not be a bad idea.

 

We need 2 OFers....so curious to see what Shatkin's does.

He seems pretty good to me. His skillset seemed to have changed in 2014 as he saw his K-Rate increase significantly.
