fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2016 Posted October 20, 2016 I feel like there might be something to the idea that teams who rely more on walks and mashing mistakes for homers might have less success in cold weather against great pitching staffs who issue few walks and don't make many mistakes. Recent anecdotal evidence seems to suggest that contact teams have fared well in the postseason. I don't think it's necessarily hitting homers, but just having less fastball-only hitters. Donaldson I would consider a home run slugger (he's poised for 40 a year basically) but he did well because unlike Bautista and Edwin in the series (well except for Edwin game 4) he actually can adjust and hit the breaking pitches. Maybe though that's the correlation, Baseball's a hard sport and the timing window between identifying a pitch and getting a good hack is very small so home run hitters are more likely to sit on a pitch and zone everything else out. There aren't a lot of Josh Donaldson/Mike Trout/Kris Bryant type hitters
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2016 Posted October 20, 2016 Probably. The average number of weeks in aaa before first callup for a good blue jays prospect is probably 2 or so... once a prospect has a full year in aa they are basically on standby. Doesn't mean he'll stick, after double a, it is really common for guys to then just go back and forth between aaa and the majors, as needs arise, as performance dictates. Travis - 0 Pompey - 2 or 3?? Lawrie - 3 months? Snider - 2 or 3 weeks?? Lind - 2 or 3 weeks?? Aaron Hill - a few weeks? Delgado - 0 Wells - a couple weeks. And exactly zero of them came under Shaprio's management.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2016 Posted October 20, 2016 Can we assume that this front office does not consider strikeouts an issue when it comes to building a lineup considering the Smoak contract and the Upton acquisition I think they are smarter than the people who are looking at anecdotal evidence, that's for sure.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2016 Posted October 20, 2016 I said it earlier and I would much rather sign Fowler than Reddick.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2016 Posted October 20, 2016 I'm saying they failed to adjust for the last 6 weeks of the season when pitcher's upped their breaking ball usage and pitched them down and away. I'm not referring to 5 games. Really no different than team's figuring out Estrada and waiting on the offspeed that he started overthrowing during the year (kind of like the 3 straight change ups to coco crisp yesterday, Crisp waited back on that and teed it up like batting practice). 93-69 2nd ranked AL team, 102 pythag, 5-6 playoffs - 2nd best AL playoff team 89-73 4th ranked AL team- 91 pythag 5-4 playoffs - 2nd best AL playoff team Is there anything to suggest this team is performing worse in playoffs then expected??
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2016 Posted October 20, 2016 Whoever mentioned Ian Desmond earlier I agree with. Would love to fill a need with a multi-positional guy. Say Travis gets hurt you could move Desmond from the OF to 2B and then call up Pompey to platoon with Upton in the OF.
BTS Community Moderator Posted October 20, 2016 Author Posted October 20, 2016 I think they are smarter than the people who are looking at anecdotal evidence, that's for sure. I remember when it was en vogue to mock the idea that elite bullpens played up in the playoffs. Oops. Not talking about specific teams, I think you could rationalize a good enough argument for contact hitters outperforming high-K power hitters in October that it warrants looking at the data. Maybe someone has looked at the data and found that there's nothing there.
Laika Community Moderator Posted October 20, 2016 Posted October 20, 2016 How the hell is there not a single Brett Cecil appreciation thread? I f***ing love Brett Cecil. I love how casual fans think he is terrible but he is actually elite. He's the most hidden gem in Blue Jays bullpen history. He deserves a 3 or 4 year deal in free agency for many millions. I wonder what he will get!
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2016 Posted October 20, 2016 What does everyone think about EE playing 1B full time? At least for the first year or two of his deal? He doesn't seem THAT bad to me.

Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2016 Posted October 20, 2016 And exactly zero of them came under Shaprio's management. A quick glance at Cleveland players shows a similar pattern... Lindor had 80 games in aaa, Jose Ramirez 40, Carlos Santana 57 It's not that common to spend an entire season in aaa, before getting a callup. Players are historically on standby when they reach the stage that Towlez is at. It's just reactive at this point. If he goes nuts in aaa they will find a spot for him, if he is average at aaa and a need arises he will be up... The only way he is not up at some point in 2017 is injury or he shits the bed completely.

He doesn't seem THAT bad to me. His range seemed a lot better to me this season than in previous years. I don't think he's some huge liability at first like it may have seemed once upon a time. He was quite athletic and mobile at the bag this year, definitely wouldn't mind him starting over half the games at the position if not full time.

baubau Verified Member Posted October 20, 2016 Posted October 20, 2016 What relievers do you hope the Jays target? My list is: - Brett Cecil - Boone Logan - Joaquin Benoit - Brad Ziegler - Joe Balton I left the closers like Chapman, KRod, Melancon, Jansen for cost reasons. I also agree with Hurl on the trade Osuna. I can see a team like the Cubs, Nationals, Dodgers or Giants - whom ever misses out on signing a "closer" - be desperate enough to trade something worth wild for Osuna. Can move Biagini to a closer.

Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2016 Posted October 20, 2016 Jay Bruce is f***ing terrible sir. 0.2 WAR combined over the past 3 years and is as bad defensively as Saunders & Jose. Yeah he may well be - but we knew that when they tried to trade Saunders for him. They must like him, and if he isn't cut (he has a buy out) he still prob wouldn't cost much in a trade - so surely they'll try to get him again?

If the Jays wanted to build an elite bullpen this is the year to do it with several of the top relief pitchers on the market. Would anyone here consider signing a Chapman or Jansen? How much would it even cost to do that?
glory Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2016 Posted October 20, 2016 The Jays get two picks with EE and JB leaving. Wonder if they splurge on a qualified FA.

WONDERBAT Verified Member Posted October 20, 2016 Posted October 20, 2016 (edited) - Sign Reddick - Resign Brett Cecil - Make a run at Chapman - Sign Brad Ziegler - Trade a starter for good 1B/LF - Lock Josh Donaldson up Just give me hard throwers or funky side winders in the bullpen. Edited October 20, 2016 by WONDERBAT
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2016 Posted October 20, 2016 None Find starters who have failed and convert them, Yeah unless you pay for elites (e.g. Chapman), pretty much any failed starter or waiver claim bounceback candidate is worth signing. If they don't work out you just get rid and get someone else - just look at the bullpen turnover this year alone.

Would anyone here consider signing a Chapman or Jansen? How much would it even cost to do that? I'd go close to 100M over five years for Chapman or Jansen if payroll goes to 160+. Those guys can be worth like 3-5 wins over a season. Also, the fan in me loves watching elite relievers.
