Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted March 22, 2016 Posted March 22, 2016 No real need to read beyond that point. Basically his premise is that every starting prospect turned reliever had this unlimited potential that was ruined by yo-yo-ing. There isn't a single word about how little Sanchez has accomplished as a starter in his pro career. It's all just wishful thinking. The problem is when he states he tried to disprove his thesis...if you actually committed to doing that, it is incredibly easy.
BTS Community Moderator Posted March 22, 2016 Posted March 22, 2016 Why do you guys read opinion articles like that from the national media? Do they ever make you think about a topic like this in a way that you hadn't previously considered?

Like I said, that was by far the worst thing I've ever read from him. Avoided objectivity like the plague.

He used to be a reliable reporter, this soap-boxing is a new unfortunate turn.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted March 22, 2016 Posted March 22, 2016 Good. Sanchez to the pen plz. My fantasy team approves that decision

Sorrow Verified Member Posted March 23, 2016 Posted March 23, 2016 Went 6+ innings today Tells me what I need to know about where Gibby's head is at It's worth keeping him stretched out. Who knows if someone comes down injured between now and April 3rd, worst thing this team could do is starting limiting Sanchez's, Floyd's or Hutch's innings.
bones10 Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2016 Posted March 23, 2016 Hutchison: actual MLB success as a SP, no one bats an eye that he's starting in AAA. Sanchez: s*** as a SP for five years, yet some people consider it an insult if he starts in AAA. Craziness. Let both start in AAA and call them up when a need arises. Make that Straily trade already, too. bro are you not aware of Sanchez's ability to throw Heat. That's like an automatic sub 3 era.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted March 24, 2016 Posted March 24, 2016 That Fangraphs article is a pretty good read actually. And encouraging.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted March 24, 2016 Posted March 24, 2016 Who was the last player who was so divisive? Goins I suppose and Gose. Both have had vociferous for and against camps in varying numbers.

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2016 Posted March 24, 2016 That Famgraphs article is a pretty good read actually. And encouraging. Basically how I feel about the situation. Sanchez has so much more upside and has been the much better pitcher in ST so its not like he doesn't deserve it. If he falters you can throw him back in the pen and have no regrets. Its obvious the players want Sanchez starting too and it just sends a bad message if you don't reward him based on his performance.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted March 24, 2016 Posted March 24, 2016 I want Sanchez to start the season in the rotation Feels like an unpopular opinion on here
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2016 Posted March 24, 2016 I want Sanchez to start the season in the rotation Feels like an unpopular opinion on here It's just hard to believe that a bunch of Spring innings is enough to change minds. He also hasn't been missing bats. I'd start him in AAA but it's likely not to be popular with the players and the difference between him and Floyd might not be big enough to warrant a shitstorm anyway. I'd be trading for Trevor May yesterday in Shatkins' shoes.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2016 Posted March 24, 2016 Even though ST stats should be taken with an extreme grain of salt I think its naive to say he hasn't improved. Only 3 walks in 20 innings is very encouraging and his mechanics look much better as well. He might not miss a whole lot of bats but he doesn't need to in order to be successful as a SP. With the extreme groundball rate all he has to do is limit the walks.

He will be very serviceable if the walk rate is legitimate.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2016 Posted March 24, 2016 Trading for May and moving Dickey in a separate deal would be the only way I'd be OK with moving Dickey. Can't take away from the depth, but if it's a lateral depth move (Dickey out, May in), it's balances out. Make it happen, Shapkins.

Make that Straily trade already, too. Hutch has had MINIMAL success at the MLB level and one might argue that without the offensive support behind him last year, his W-L numbers are completely reversed to go along with the rest of his horrid numbers. Aside from a high walk rate, Sanchez actually had minimal success in the same role as well. But I gotta say that Sanchez has pitched his way into a job and its his to lose. If he keeps his walk rate down, all this BS about missing bats and all that is completely meaningless as long as he continues to induce weak contact on the ground. It's when he tries to do too much that he gets himself into trouble. His natural ability is more than enough to carry him as a number 2 or 3 guy, depending on what kind of makeup he has mentally. A lot of that that is yet to be seen and that is the plain and simple truth. So people judging that a 22 year old is this or that has no f***ing idea what they are talking about. He could be a complete bust or he could end up being a solid no 2 guy. Could end up being a valuable back end of the bullpen guy as he's proven to be over the past 2 seasons. But my take is that he has above average MLB stuff. Needs to develop his secondary pitches and above all else, we need to find out where his composure level on that mound is at over a generous period of time. Then make some sort of solid judgement on what he actually is. Until then, all this hate on a 22 year old kid with a 96 plus fastball with movement is just worthless. His ceiling is obviously pretty high, so why not find out how high that ceiling goes?

(We would never use W-L record here for the reasons you just stated.) Hutch actually had an okay xFIP last year and put up 1.5 WAR in 150 IP which is not bad. He has a 4.00 career xFIP and 102 career xFIP- (meaning he is just 2% below average).
Cyborg Verified Member Posted March 24, 2016 Posted March 24, 2016 Trending up? League or Sanchez? League avg is higher than that and trending up. Sanchez has been around 7% in ST.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2016 Author Posted March 24, 2016 6.5% in 2014 7.0% in 2015 Trending up. Needs another secondary pitch as we all know. Pretty hard to get SwStr when serving a steady diet of fastballs? Chris Carpenter the guy I compare to Sanchez had years with 5.9%, 6.3%, 7.0%
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2016 Posted March 24, 2016 And what's the league avg GB rate? The less the opponent hits the ball against you, the better. Miss bat > GB.

Maybe thats why you may have to reevaluate your reliance on Sabermetrics because Hutch suckkkkkked last year and crashed in the last half of 2014 and I don't care what the numbers show. 2% below average is still below average, he will be going back to AAA and hopefully swapped out for........
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2016 Posted March 24, 2016 I think Sanchez's realistic upside is he could be a Keuchel of 2013/2014. Around 6.5 K/9 2.8 BB/9 and a 59% GB% 2013 7.2 K/9 3.05 BB/9 55.8 GB% 3.58 xFIP 2014 6.57 K/9 2.16 BB/9 63.5 GB% 3.20 xFIP
