Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted February 25, 2016 Posted February 25, 2016 Real fans would rather have a roster of all their favourite stars. We should resign Jose and Eddy for whatever they like, bring back Halladay for 25M. Maybe Vernon Wells could come back for 15M or so, I always liked him. Bring back Joe Carter!!!

rydermike Verified Member Posted February 25, 2016 Posted February 25, 2016 All the fans who say its just money, spend it on Bautista will be the first to complain that they were stupid for signing him to such a big deal in a couple years if his production falls off. It's like the Cardinal fans who called the team cheap for not resigning Pujols. Pujols, the guy who ESPN named today as the player with the biggest albatross contract in the MLB. Foresight is key. If signing 32 year old Pujols to a deal based on his current level was a bad idea, pretty sure signing a 36 year old to a long term current level deal is too. http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/insider/story/_/id/14827368/albert-pujols-tops-list-baseball-biggest-albatrosses-worst-contracts-mlb

Hopefully we hit with our upcoming comp picks if that's what it comes to.

Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted February 25, 2016 Posted February 25, 2016 Arden Zwelling Shapiro on Bautista (1/2): "For me, respecting the process and the player means you don’t comment on any of those things publicly." "Comments have to be to him directly. Anything I feel, anything I think, would be to Jose or his representative."
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted February 25, 2016 Posted February 25, 2016 What are the chances of the average comp pick becoming at least an average or better MLB player 3-5 years later? The Cardinals have obviously done well above average drafting. Hopefully Shapiro/Atkins/scouting staff are decent. But when even first round picks don't always even become MLB players I imagine these sandwhich rounch comp picks are all over the place in terms of eventual quality. We also struck out with our Melky comp pick didn't we? Is he the only one we've had under the current system?

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted February 25, 2016 Posted February 25, 2016 Yeah I totally agree with this. The $$$/WAR argument for Bautista is really terrible and I hope no real fans are using that as a basis of their decision of whether to sign him. He's obviously worth quite a bit more than his SABR stats and I hope the team pays him accordingly. How much more is another issue but they should be willing to sign him for a hefty price IMO. I think you went s little overboard. The jays would have their own evaluations of players and their own WAR type stat that would include a bunch of factors like performance, medical, makeup etc.. So it's not like the jays just look at fangraphs WAR and decide to sign players.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted February 25, 2016 Posted February 25, 2016 Jose getting a free lesson in how to conduct your business. so it was jose who leaked all these numbers? Give me a break. Jose has always been very forthcoming with the media. He was asked about negotiations. He said he gave them a number, and didn't believe in a home town discount. Nothing he said is out of line. He has a year left on his contract and would like to test free agency to see where his value truly lies. The only way he is going to miss out on this opportunity is for the Jays to meet his number. His number is likely high because he wants to test free agency. This is his prerogative. He didn't play out his final year last year and it cost him a lot of money. This time if he plays out his final year and has a bad year it could also cost him a lot of money, but he obviously feels confident in his abilities. Negotiations can begin in earnest in the offseason. We wouldn't be talking about all this at length if all these numbers hadn't been leaked.

He's 100% responsible and I don't even know how that's debatable. The rant he went on a few days ago was unnecessary and unprofessional. No one is angry at him for wanting to get paid. That's fine. But acting the way he acted was wrong.

metafour Verified Member Posted February 25, 2016 Posted February 25, 2016 Jose has always been very forthcoming with the media. He was asked about negotiations. He said he gave them a number, and didn't believe in a home town discount. Nothing he said is out of line. Please. He went WELL out of his way to put on his accounting cap to somehow try and bring Rogers' share prices into the forefront as a basis for why the team should have no problem just meeting his demand. That was well beyond stating that he wouldn't take a "hometown discount". It was a calculated attempt at playing fan emotions against ownership for his own gain. You think he doesn't know full well that fan-turmoil has been high after the entire AA and David Price sagas? He was trying to create a shitstorm, point and blank. Unfortunately for him, his demands are so absurd that the whole thing kind of blew up in his face. In reality, he just gave Shapiro an easy out to just letting him walk or trading him. Shapiro has already demonstrated his beliefs on resigning 35+ year old star players to long deals that almost surely won't work out in the team's favour. He probably didn't even want to resign Bautista long-term in the first place, but likely would have settled so as to not rile up the fanbase negatively.

Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted February 25, 2016 Posted February 25, 2016 Jose could have avoided all of this by just coming out and saying "I want to test free agency and see what i'm worth". Instead he throws out an absurd number, and calls ownership cheap for not meeting his demands. Furthermore, Shapiro/Atkins should come out and say "we want to see how the year plays out and we will be offering Bautista a contract after the end of the season" If you think Bautista didn't have major attitude in his last couple interviews, you aren't paying attention. He started all of this crap when he simply could have said "I don't think its appropriate to make comments about contract negotiations" and that would have been the end of it. Just look at the difference between how Price handled things vs Bautista.

Please tell me Shapiro is smart enough to not pay Bautista for his past? He has averaged about 4.5 fangraphs WAR the last 4 years. What would have been fair value for that? $20m/year? Use him for a playoff run this year and take the compensation pick for the qualifying offer at year end. Klaw: No chance. I think Bautista made Shapiro’s life easy.

But anyways... yes for sure they have their own evaluations and some of Bautista's valuable is hard or impossible to quantify. I'd think you'd agree that they should sign him before April so that it is not a distraction during the season. Also it would be quite annoying hearing the media talk about it nonstop.
