TheHurl Site Manager Posted February 25, 2016 Posted February 25, 2016 The Cardinals lost Pujols and didn't miss a beat. That's what the Jays should be striving for. The moment you let past performance dictate future value is when you get into a lot of trouble. If Bautista was five years younger then it would be different but at age 36-40, I really don't care what he did from 29-35. It's going to be a whole different performance. I had a conversation with someone who cited Pujols as a player that shows old players can still rake. Worst part is that he's only a year older than Jose.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted February 25, 2016 Posted February 25, 2016 I don't get why people are so mad at Jose. He can ask for whatever he wants, its his right... If he thinks he's worth x amount of money and you don't want to sign him, thats fine let him go to FA. For all we know he just really wants to experience FA so that is why he is asking for such a high number.

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted February 25, 2016 Posted February 25, 2016 who is mad at him? Just read some of the replies to his tweets and even Twitter in general.

He might have put up a ridiculous number just to posture and probably didn't want the number out just his little line in the sand speech. I still don't think Westhead knew jack s***. Pulled a number out of his ass and if the latest rumors are to be believed got sort of close and it all snowballed from there.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted February 25, 2016 Posted February 25, 2016 So you figure Twitter is a good reflection of the general population? Probably a better (read truer) reflection than this board.

Yeah he certainly has an arrogance but I think thats what help makes him great as well. A lot of other superstars are the same way. Bonds, Arod and Harper are all like that, even JD has a certain way about him. As a fan I don't have a problem with it.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted February 25, 2016 Posted February 25, 2016 People here seem to think he's kind of a bag of dicks, but everyone knew that already. I mean whatever. I don't have an issue with Bautista. I mean no one likes him for his personality. Except for maybe Kawasaki, no one really likes any ballplayer for their personality. We like what they do on the field and on the field, Bautista's surliness just adds to his legend. When he commits assault or something, I'll label him a bad guy. All this other stuff is small potatoes.

Yeah like what if that truly is the number it would take for him to forego FA even if he knows he might not get that number. I don't think Westhead made it up, he knows as a journalist the consequences of making up a story. He cited 2 sources and as we've seen over the last couple of days other journalists have confirmed with other sources. The likeliest scenario is someone at Rogers leaked the number to him to take the blame away from Rogers.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted February 25, 2016 Posted February 25, 2016 who is mad at him? I am. Just the tone and attitude he displays in his interviews. He's coming off as super entitled and making it seem like the organization "ows him".

Or spits on an umpire, karate kicks the pitcher, intentionally beans a seagull, eyeblacks "tu ere maricon"? Have no issue with Bautista..... my issue rests with Jays FO. Bautista should have been moved in 2013 for a huge haul, Marlins and Dickey trades should never have been made. Jays had a chance to be the Cubs of the AL and AA/Beest blew it.

The Jays wouldn't have made the ALCS let alone the playoffs without Bautista last year and there is no memory of the bat flip. That moment will be remembered for decades no matter how the Bautista situation plays out.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted February 25, 2016 Posted February 25, 2016 How do you figure all that? They won the division by six games. That's a considerable margin. Its not as simple as subtracting his WAR from how many games they won the division by. Also you can't replicated the bat flip moment happening with a different player.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted February 25, 2016 Posted February 25, 2016 Cubs haven't won anything yet.

The $$$/WAR argument for Bautista is really terrible and I hope no real fans are using that as a basis of their decision of whether to sign him. He's obviously worth quite a bit more than his SABR stats and I hope the team pays him accordingly. How much more is another issue but they should be willing to sign him for a hefty price IMO.
Harvey_Specter Verified Member Posted February 25, 2016 Posted February 25, 2016 he could do the Delgado and refused to waive his no-trade rights just as a f*** you lol. He'd go to a playoff team in a heart beat though. Even if he was pissed. Not only that, but being a d*ck to FO won't help his contract negotiation value. Team friendly guys get more money

Possibly (probably?) one kick at the can, whereas the Cubs will make the postseason several times over the next while.

Awful post. Nobody actually cares about $/WAR except in the context of a budget which is very much a real constraint. Obviously the decision making process is largely going to be a determination of whether $25 or $30 million for Bautista is the best expenditure of limited resources in 2019 and 2020. That's what all roster decisions ultimately come down to: is this the most efficient and productive use of money and a roster spot? Your "lol real fans don't care about &/WAR" posts make you sound like a very silly person.

We should resign Jose and Eddy for whatever they like, bring back Halladay for 25M. Maybe Vernon Wells could come back for 15M or so, I always liked him.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted February 25, 2016 Posted February 25, 2016 Those "real fans" would disappear if the Jays signed Bautista and the team fell off. Attendance didn't change with Clemens, Delgado, Halladay, etc. Just build a consistent winner and those "real fans" won't care who is playing as long as they can pay money to pelt trash on the field in October.
