Jose: 'I dont believe in hometown discounts Ive given a 5-year home discount already"

That wasn't his point.

His point was the roster from a financial standpoint can't possibly keep this group together. From an age standpoint it wouldn't make sense to keep this group together for the expected cost. And the prospect capital traded over the last three years will make it very difficult to replace the departing free agents internally.

Shapiro getting blamed for something that was inevitable is definitely unfair, but that's reality.

What? Who is blaming Shapiro for anything. But actually yes, if Shapiro can't keep this team at the top of the AL then he should be blamed. Of course though (reasonable) people won't blame him if he doesn't lock up Bautista. We have a whole bunch of talent throughout the roster, even once Bautista leaves.

AA was one of the most creative GMs in the game. He did exactly what he said he would do when here: build up the farm, use those pieces on the team AND to acquire good talent. He always said he believed in acquiring elite talent and that's what he tried to do. He emptied the farm system in a few moves that didn't work out, but showed complete ability in building it back up again. It was actually pretty amazing, like Connor Greene for example. Nobody was talking about that guy, but then after AA traded all those guys at the desdline, he started going on interviews and talking about how they still have guys they like on the farm, and how Greene has really impressed them. Then all of a sudden people are all talking about Greene and he is a top 100 prospect.

I like Shapiro. I also really like AA. I believe over his tenure AA added more value through trades then he lost. I think he made some mistakes but also pulled off some absolute steals. Okay so Dickey didnt win the cy young, but Donaldson won the mvp.

I think it will be even more ridiculous if Shapiro tanks this team into a rebuild in a year and people like you say it had to be done because of what AA left him. AA did everything the fans and Rogers could have hoped by the time he was done.

On the topic at hand, personally if it was me, I'd be looking to sign EE right now and I'd be looking to trade Bautista for a good young pitcher and a lesser OFer. He is fun to watch and I have no problem with his demands for a certain salary, but if he looks at it in black and white, we should too. We could trade him and get some good pieces that could help for years. People will pretend in a year that Shapiro didn't at least have that option, and maybe he doesnt because of Rogers, but it should be done.

Bingo. Cleveland is a horrible, poor place. It has nothing to do with Shapiro and everything to do with their terrible, terrible poverty.

I haven't had the privilege of going yet. Only MLB city within an 8 hour drive of Toronto I haven't been to yet to see a game. My pals have said I'm not missing much.

Jose is talking to Rogers, I think.

Yeah he definitely is. A lot of his quotes directed at Rogers haven't been making the rounds as much.

Bautista put all of the focus on Rogers: "It's not necessarily Ross and Mark. I can't say that, I don't know... (1of2) #BlueJays

... Some of that decision making, of a contract of this size that I presented, has to come from ownership." #BlueJays

I don't regret the Price or Tulo trades even for a second. Norris has yet to demonstrate that he's anything more than a replacement level starter, while Price was a substantial upgrade for our spot on the win curve and carried us to within a pube of the world series. The Tulo trade was just a plain heist.

Honestly, I think the 2015 trades were more justifiable (whether I agreed with them or not), but reality is those trades were simply doubling down on a franchise changing 2013 off-season. He made terrible, terrible trades in 2013. The 2015 momentarily made us forget about 2013, but the direction he was taking was simply not a sustainable process.

I've said before, AA leaving was a calculated move on his part. He leaves as a hero without having to deal with the post-2016 s*** storm, and his replacements get all the blame for things that he himself would not have been able to do (re-signing Price, fitting Bats/Edwin into a $140m payroll after 2016, etc).

I'd rather see the team be consistently good than have one or two good years before another drought. No one will give a damn about the bat flip in 2019 if the Jays miss the playoffs in 2016, 17, and 18. You have to build a consistent winner. Trading prospects for guys making $20m a year from ages 31-36 is not the way to do that, and that approach is going to catch up to the Jays after 2016. Shapiro/Atkins have done a good job of at least weathering it a bit.

Ride out 2016. If they underperform and they're out of it, see what someone will pay at the deadline. If nothing really good take the compensation (if his demands are out of this world).

Long time follower, first time poster. I'm just curious about what you all think the odds are that we end up trading Jose or Edwin before the season begins or early in the season? Despite both of them being on the market next summer, do you think the tradeoff would be worth it? Thanks!

No chance in a 2016 year we should be competing for a flag. And because we get a pick for a QO if they sign elsewhere there is not much chance of a deadline deal that would be worth moving them. Plus they have10/5 veto. Welcome to the board.

Maybe it's just me but I'm not parsing that last sentence there.

But wow @ Jose. Good for him. This probably won't end well for Jays fans but Bautista just earned himself some more of my respect.

Why are people getting upset? Why are people are sensitive? We already knew it'd take $22M-$25M to keep him here.

What he meant to say is that basic talk about MLB team revenues and payrolls with Rogers and the Blue Jays makes no sense because of their unique ownership situation.

"It's really unfair to talk about revenue, payroll and all of that stuff to me, because I know that for this organization those types of normal considerations and constraints are non-existent"

Haha, yeah I gathered this much. Just a really awkward sentence in print.

That would be hilarious if Bautista strong arms Rogers into signing Edwin and himself.

I'm just happy he's trying to shield Atkins and Shapiro from all the blame. Bobcat will go off with this news lol.

He's right, but he's also over-stepping his boundaries with the quotes about Rogers. There wasn't a need to go that far.

In general. I'm already hearing "Jose is a bitch."

I wonder if he's had any particular conversations that may have set him off a bit -- hints but not yet confirmation that they can't meet his price. He's probably been stewing for years over this too. Not to mention his demonstrable frustration with not putting a competitive team together in years past (2014 deadline when he and Janssen both had words to the media).

The Bautista and EE extensions were worth more than the value given up in the Marlins trade. If you were to combine all of AA's moves they would grade out as a plus.

Jose is consistent. Found this article from just after 2014 season:

"You can say this about Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Jose Bautista; he doesn’t mince words. In a wrap-up interview with the Toronto media (H/T John Lott, National Post), the Blue Jays right-fielder spoke candidly about the season, his admiration for rookie outfielder Dalton Pompey, and a few other topics.

When the topic turned to fellow outfielder, and impending free agent, Melky Cabrera, Bautista dropped what will likely be a ten ton brick on the backs of Blue Jays fans everywhere when he replied to the likelihood that Cabrera would not return in 2015.

“I have to assume that (Cabrera will not return). When you have the chance to re-sign one of the top free agents and you don’t take advantage of that opportunity, the chances of him coming back to you are pretty slim.”

ps. Thank god the Jays didn't resign Melky

"Jose is a bitch," said the clerk, frustrated in his cubicle, as he formulated yet another argument in his head for why he should get that .25 cent raise on his next review cycle.
