crazy47larry Verified Member Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 Anyone that argues against this really has no clue how good Martin is. ffs he is already 33rd on career WAR list for catchers all-time, and by the end of this deal he should crack the top 20! I had never noticed a more drastic single player change in my life as a Jays fan. Literally the first pitch, the first batter, the first inning of him behind the plate was simply superb. Coming off the flaming piles of dog s*** we had as catcher the last while... I honestly felt spoiled. It was bliss.
Inklink Old-Timey Member Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 Jose sure does like to run his mouth. I want him here, long term, but this doesn't seem like the best way to go about it.

TheHurl Site Manager Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 Jose and his agent are not stupid... Next years FA pool is not strong and he will be the best bat available i think unless i am missing someone. I fully expected him to go to free agency and get his big pay day that he never got. Jose does not allow Jay Alou to negotiate for him. At least not last time and it doesn't sound like it this time either.
ValiantJaysFan Verified Member Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 If he does leave, at least he's gonna torch Rogers in the process. I feel like we shouldn't be happy about this as its already difficult to get free agents to come here.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 I feel like we shouldn't be happy about this as its already difficult to get free agents to come here. It's difficult because the team hasn't been in a playoff position in 20 years. Winning cures almost everything... I have no problem with Bautista taking on "the man".

I don't disagree with anything he said but "the man" took a chance on him when he was basically a worthless scrub from the Pirates and made him a rich man. He should have a little more diplomacy.

He should have a little more diplomacy. If you read the full quote in context Bautista alludes to that. He said the deal was fair at the time but he overperformed on the deal so the blue jays got a discount the last 5 years so he isn't looking to give them another one.

I know, but taking a dump on them publicly is a bit disrespectful to the guys paying him millions of dollars who he is trying to get a raise from. If I'm Rogers I'm asking him to waive his trade veto rights.

Its one thing to have him leave as a FA, different story to trade him in a year you are trying to win the division. Not to mention, Shapiro would probably not agree to that.

If I'm Rogers I'm asking him to waive his trade veto rights. And if you do that then everything that he said about Blue Jays revenues being mysterious and hinting at them not stepping up becomes a lot more real... And to be honest, I would totally shop Bautista around...but I would've done that before he opened his mouth today.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 I absolutely f***ing abhor reporters who ask if a player will give a hometown discount. Hey *******, TSN is offering a 50% raise but you should stay at the Score or whatever as a hometown discount because you've been there for a long time. It's such a stupid f***ing question and an unfair one at that and I'm glad Jose called it what it is. They have no right to impose themselves on Jose's salary.

If they get a controllable #1 starter for him rather than letting him walk, I think that helps us win the division. It's not like we are hurting for offence. Would be a tough sell though to the casuals and would take balls of steel by Shatkins because they're already villains to casuals.

The upgrade a number 1 starter provides over the number 5 starter is less than the upgrade of say Bautista over Jay Bruce. By taking away offence you are also talking away extra ABs from the top of the lineup so you aren't just losing Bautista's offensive WAR but War from guys like Donaldson, Tulo, EE etc because you would be turning the lineup over less often.
Inklink Old-Timey Member Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 Bautista hires Scott Boras in 3.2.1...

Factor in defensive WAR because Bautista was looking pretty bad out there last year. But I get what you're saying. I think the team needs to be more well rounded though. Especially for playoff baseball when sabre metrics kind of go out the window because it's such a concentrated amount of baseball and there's no time for things to average out, pitching becomes more valuable imo.
Key22 Verified Member Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 Jay Bruce in - Jose Bautista traded soon???

Huh? You wouldn't trade Bautista for a controllable No. 1 pitcher (a Stroman)? Ridiculous.

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 Huh? You wouldn't trade Bautista for a controllable No. 1 pitcher (a Stroman)? Ridiculous. When I read it I didn't see the controllable part, rather a number 1 starter for 1 season only. A team isn't going to trade a controllable number 1 starter for Bautista anyway.

I've given this organization a 5-year hometown discount already. #BlueJays He has a point. He's just a big mouth. His heart believes in hometown discounts because it will help him become a sports legend. He's right though, he also admits the Jays took a huge chance on him... FWIW. Also, yes, he has a huge f***ing mouth.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 Jose has talked to other teams, they know what they'll offer him so that's where he's setting his number. K.........

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 8 posts. Is that a record?
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 Sure, in retrospect the extension worked out very well for the organization. However, at the time, Jose wasn't signing that deal out of the goodness of his heart; there was risk assumed by both sides. Regardless of how that deal worked out, I hope the organization offers him a deal based on expected future value, and not because he's "owed" anything due to the surplus value he provided over the past 5 years. Agreed, and he did recognize the risk and admitted it, saying he never once complained about his contract. I dont see any breaking news here. I also dont know why some of you are butthurt over his comments - this is all pretty obvious, isn't it? Yes. No one really knows the trigger as to why Bats said what he said and in the tone he used. Maybe his orignal demands were met with some type of counter offer (both term and dollars) that offended him so greatly he decided to speak out in the way that he did. But then I'd be speculating just as much as some who decide to label his comments as "stubborn", "stupid", and "greedy" without knowing the catalyst for him being somewhat annoyed........... or maybe it was just the sight of Mike Wilner's face first thing in the morning that threw his mood off. Hah! Yes you can trade them. They'd have to be terrible for that to happen, I don't see it. I absolutely f***ing abhor reporters who ask if a player will give a hometown discount. It's too bad, but it's a stone-cold business. I think Bautistas been regressing in the outfield in a big way and I really don't wanna pay him top-player dollar for his regression years.

You put him at 1B or DH and it isn't an issue. There really aren't any comparable's when it comes to Jose, outside of Ortiz (correct me if I'm wrong). His velocity off the bat and BB rate indicate he isn't regressing offensively and would age well over the course of the next 2 seasons.
