If they think Sanchez is SP material like I do, then there's nothing else he can learn in Buffalo. He's never going to be an elite K/BB guy, but Shapiro has proven in the past that he sees the value in groundball pitchers, unlike most people on this forum.

He has a lot to learn (such as an effective change), and Buffalo is the better place to learn it. If he's not in the starting rotation he needs to be in Buffalo.

Edit: and actually if he does develop an effective 3rd pitch, I can see him getting up into the 8-9K/9IP territory

I could be making this up, but I thought there was an article or two about him possibly starting in buffalo about a week ago. I would like to here the shapiro interview as well. Who interviewed him?

IF the Jays actually think Sanchez belongs in the rotation, then how are they going to manage his innings??? He isn't read or capable of throwing 170-190 innings this year. If he's going to be a starter, he should start in AAA where they can monitor his innings (let Floyd or Chavez start in the bigs) then bring him up mid season.

It feels like if he starts in the rotation...he's destine to shift to the pen later in the year.

Inning limits are pretty garbage and there is no reason to think this regime will implement such things. They hired a sports science dept so they can treat each player uniquely. If a player is tiring during the season they will come up with a strategy but just because Sanchez hasn't thrown many innings in the past doesn't mean he will break down if he hits a certain number of innings this year.

Inning limits irk me. It's either going to assplode or it isn't.

Agreed, Stroman's talking about chucking 200 this year.

I don't subscribe to the notion that pitchers can easily make changes to their pitches during a season, or that AAA is a better place to do so, especially for a pitcher who has experienced significant success in the majors. He had all winter to make changes to his third pitch and it looks pretty good.

Thus far, unless you saw that hanging change get rocked today... we'll see how it plays out Grant. If he needs a bit more work on the pitch, it won't be the worst thing.

Meh, I think younger arms are safer than older guys, I believe it's all about the bullets. It's either going to happen(injury) or it isn't. Guys coming off recent injury is a safer bet to baby them, other than that, I believe it's a fallacy, I'll admit guys are throwing much harder these days and that's certainly a part of coveting a certain type. Let em chuck!

I saw that, but I also saw him get 2 strikeouts and some weak contact on the change. I know I'll get flak for this, but let's bring our best pitchers north. He's an elite reliever and putting him in AAA for any reason is just stupid. I suspect we'd even be in some hot water with the player's union if we tried it.

People are incredibly hung up on K/BB, but look at this and tell me he isn't a huge weapon out of the 'pen. That's not luck.

Hey, I'm all for that too, Grant. I'm just saying working on a pitch for a few more weeks in Buffalo or extended ST where it's warm won't be a bad thing. I don't hate on the young man, but he needs another pitch, even in relieving. He's certainly an asset.

pretty sure he's wrong

Yeah. He didn't debut until 2014 in July and wasn't on the 40 man roster in 2013 so 2016 should be his last option year.

Hutch should be out of options he debuted in 2012, spent all of 2013 in the minors ... all of 2014 in the majors....and part of 2015 in the minors.

So am I. Just randomly came across it and posted.

It's crazy how out of touch some of the newspaper guys are these days.

Wasn't 2013 his tommy john recovery? I'm guessing the Jays got an extra option year because of it like all the McGowan issues.

I think he spent 2013 on the MLB disabled list, not the minors.

It could be, but he did throw 35 innings in the minors over 9 starts, so it would have been longer than your typical rehab time. If they did get an extra option though that's the most likely reason.

What would it take at this point to sign a guy like Justin Morneau? Is his injury just too risky for teams to buy into him, is he looking for a specific team, is it about money?

I really only matters what the Jays think....anyone know how they handled Carrasco's transition to the rotation? how about Salazar, who had a lot of injuries in the minors (and didn't throw that many innings).

Why would we want Morneau?

Yeah, the Jays have three 1Bs at this point.

Which reminds me...

Who is slated to be JD's backup? Dominguez? Barney?

Barney is at the moment...

Makes me feel like having Kawasaki backup 3B.

Not me. Barney can glove it better. Not looking forward to a no-JD lineup though. Gonna suck seeing Barney at 3B in mid-May when Josh tears his achilles.

If Donaldson misses time I'd probably use Goins at 3B and Barney at 2nd. Crazy? I suspect Goins has the reflexes and arm for 3rd.
