Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted June 25, 2015 Posted June 25, 2015 Trading EE for a good pitcher is going to be difficult. He's not a spring chicken so any team rebuilding is out. That leaves contenders and who wants to lose big league assets when in contention, especially pitching? It could happen as you do see contenders sometimes make deals together to tweak their rosters a bit but it's not very common. And frankly do the Jays want to lose big league assets? With AA needing some big league results I don't see him trading big league talent.
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted June 25, 2015 Posted June 25, 2015 I'd be fine with Edwin for Strasburg, but SS is a Boras guy. Beeston's personal beef gets in the way of that. Beeston is gone after this season, shouldn't be an issue going forward.
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted June 25, 2015 Posted June 25, 2015 There were underlying concerns with both prior to acquisition, but they both had Cy Young years right before we acquired them. If they are having problems... Especially if we are giving up guys like Syndergaard, Sanchez, Norris, and/or Hoffman in these trades, why not target a younger AL pitcher and get a guy with a few years of control? JJ got hurt; tehy knew the risk. RAD --> they overpaid for a guy that was very likely to regress as they felt it put them over the hump. It was a bad deal but everyone knew it at the time too.

He was also very cheap at the time ($5M if I recall correctly). They got the best starter available who: 1. fit within the budget 2. was under control for 3 years; and 3. who was available via trade they overpaid because RAD fit these requirements perfectly. It didn't work out. Move on.

KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted June 25, 2015 Posted June 25, 2015 The rumours are they want to move Stras to resign Zimm to a long term deal. Speaking of which the other Zimm (Ryan) is signed through 2020 and is a full time 1B now. The EE idea doesn't add up for the Nats at all.

RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted June 25, 2015 Posted June 25, 2015 The team that finds EE most attractive maybe the Boston Redsox

Not to mention the fact that in 3 of those cases (Reyes, Burly, and Dickey) Jays paid hefty salaries as well. Virtually the same amount that they would have gotten the player at Free Agency. I understand that Reyes or Burly might not select to come to Toronto as free agents, however that meant that all of the players acquired were coming of new contracts where they were already over paid. So we traded young prospects for Overpaid veterans.
Mikeleelop Verified Member Posted June 25, 2015 Posted June 25, 2015 The team that finds EE most attractive maybe the Boston Redsox they already have two DH - ramierez and Ortiz (maybe three if you include fat panda)

HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted June 25, 2015 Posted June 25, 2015 What do you guys think about Jon Niese? Peripherals look good, and he doesn't seem to be the kind of guy who could command super premium prospects. Although I'm not sure how well he would translate pitching in the AL East.

DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted June 25, 2015 Posted June 25, 2015 I like Niese but his shoulder has falred up again this year. I wouldn't take the risk at a high price but if iit's a package of B prospects I'd take the leap.
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted June 25, 2015 Posted June 25, 2015 What would it take to get Samardzija? Maybe try to add a reliever like a returning Nate Jones and you have 2 nice additions for possibly a decent price.

Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted June 25, 2015 Posted June 25, 2015 Although I'm not sure how well he would translate pitching in the AL East. I really hate this phrase. Wouldn't that apply to ANY pitcher? Also, I think the effect here of moving to the AL East is dramatically overrated.
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted June 25, 2015 Posted June 25, 2015 wut He's pretty good. Don't be fooled by the last time the Jays played there.

Pitch well it won't matter what park/division you are in.

TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted June 25, 2015 Posted June 25, 2015 I wouldn't trade for EE if I was a National League team. If I was an NL team, I wouldn't trade for Kemp or Lind either.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted June 25, 2015 Posted June 25, 2015 plz don't be thinking travis If Travis could be the centerpiece for Samardzija I could live with that. I don't think the Travis we saw to start this season is anywhere close to the player he'll ultimately be (I'm referring the power outburst). I'd sell high if I could.

Our team would be getting a ton worse and we would giving up and everyday player with control for 5 years for a half year rental who is making money, madness trade idea.......

Caper Verified Member Posted June 25, 2015 Posted June 25, 2015 The way GD talked about Norris. It seems like he's just a bit of experience away from having this figured out. Hard to get rid of him IMO.
