Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 1. Henderson 2. Dimmagio 3. Bonds 4. Ruth 5. Aaron 6. Williams 7. Griffey Jr 8. Gehrig 9. Trout Bench: Musial, Cobb, Thomas (pinch hitter only), Mays (defensive replacement only) Wat Willie Mays is a starter without a doubt. 3rd in career WAR...

He'll go down as an all time great.
TilsonBritoFan Verified Member Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 Bonds is the greatest ever, Griffey jr doesn't hold a candle to him Not arguing your first point, but your second point is a bannable offense.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 U trolling us, bro? Nobody thinks he was. In his prime though, he wasn't much different than Mike Trout. Definitely not overrated... The fans always compared Bonds and Griffey, but.................. Bonds was in another level.
TilsonBritoFan Verified Member Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 Nobody said he wasn't great but he doesn't belong with those other names. He sure does bud.
jays_fever Old-Timey Member Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 Wat Willie Mays is a starter without a doubt. 3rd in career WAR... lol Willie Mays is arguably the greatest player of all time. I know people will say Ruth this and Ruth that, Wille Mays actually competed against athletes, not drunken slobs
TilsonBritoFan Verified Member Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 The fans always compared Bonds and Griffey, but.................. Bonds was in another level. He was hall of fame calibre before roids, after roids he became greatest ever. How good would griffey have been if he took same stuff as Barry? Griffey had better early career numbers...

reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 Also there's a *slight* problem that my lineup is pretty much all outfielders. That team could use Jeter. At 2B. LOL I prefer Hornsby for 2B

Best 5 season before 1999 fWAR Griffey (9.7, 9, 8.4, 6.9, 6.6) = 8.1 fWAR avg Bonds (10.5, 9.9, 9.6, 9.2, 8.9) = 9.6 fWAR avg
GD Old-Timey Member Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 Catcher hasn't had as much premium talent as other positions. Probably has to be Bench or Piazza though. Maybe in a decade and change it'll be Posey
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 Griffey averaged 6 WAR for like a decade in his prime, with a couple 9s mixed in there. Unless you're calling him the greatest player of his generation, you're not overrating him.

Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 Why are there so many outfielders in this lineup? Gotta get guys like Honus Wagner and A-Rod in there. Miggy probably doesn't make the team off the bench. Not a better hitter than guys like Jimmie Foxx, Mark McGwire, Tris Speaker. At this point its pretty obvious he's a better player then McGwire
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 Ted Williams is a f***ing boss. I just wanted to a plug in for him with all the other discussion.

Maybe in a decade and change it'll be Posey That's a really great point. If you were to go by fangraphs WAR, Jason Kendall is a top 25 catcher of all time!
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 At this point its pretty obvious he's a better player then McGwire It's arguable, Miggy has a slightly lower career wRC+. At their best McGwire is probably the better hitter, with a lot more power.
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 That's a really great point. If you were to go by fangraphs WAR, Jason Kendall is a top 25 catcher of all time! Is that a surprise to you? Kendall was truly a unique player

GD Old-Timey Member Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 wRC+ takes into account run environment correct? yes
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 wRC+ takes into account run environment correct? Yes, it's park and league adjusted, so even if the offensive environment was more prevalent in McGwire's era, he was still that much better than league average.
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 Is Miggy a better hitter if he sustains it over a period of 15 years as opposed to 12 full seasons?
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 At his best McGwire hit 70 dingers while walking in nearly a quarter of his plate appearances. Take a seat, Miggy. Excellent point
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 Is that a surprise to you? Kendall was truly a unique player It is a surprise. When you think of hall of fame catchers, not too many guys come to mind. I never realized that.
Laika Community Moderator Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 It is a surprise. When you think of hall of fame catchers, not too many guys come to mind. I never realized that. super hard to have a long and productive career behind the dish! s***, Brian McCann is the 32nd best C in history. Russell Martin is 34th! They are both better ranked as catchers than Delgado and Giambi rank as 1B (and they still have plenty of time to add WAR). Really when you compare careers with WAR, you sort of have to give catchers another positional adjustment... maybe. arguably.
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 It is a surprise. When you think of hall of fame catchers, not too many guys come to mind. I never realized that. lived in the shadow of Piazza, Posada and Varitek
TilsonBritoFan Verified Member Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 Best 5 season before 1999 fWAR Griffey (9.7, 9, 8.4, 6.9, 6.6) = 8.1 fWAR avg Bonds (10.5, 9.9, 9.6, 9.2, 8.9) = 9.6 fWAR avg They didnt both start in the same year so don't just pick 1999, it gives more Bonds seasons to cherry pick from. Either way I'm not debating you on Bonds being better. You're the one saying Griffey doesn't even come close which is just ridiculous. We are talking about the 2 greatest OF of the 80's/90's. They were both unbelievable. Bonds was a bit better.
