Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 Was at the game, just got home. It sucked . Yeah it was pretty boring TBH. Dickey was barely scraping by, offense was dead for both sides. Best parts of the game were the 1 run we scored and the 2 innings Osuna pitched. I ate at wahlburgers before the game though, and it was pretty good.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 You all be happy to know that I still refused to openly cheer the Rays, just because it's the opener (and although I think I would have been okay tonight, generally it would open me up to getting the s*** kicked out of me). I went in my Bisons t-shirt as I did last year as well. I did fist pump on the strike em out, throw em out DP though. Really dead crowd there tonight. That was a fist pump? I thought you were just calling the strikeout. We knew you were favoring the Rays the way you called the balls and strikes all night.
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 Navarro must be pulling his hair out. He got demoted to back-up catcher for a guy that can't hit / can't frame / can't catch. But at least he's Canadian. welcome to the board. You might want to delete your account and start over though.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 PVRed game as was on day trip for meetings. Watched it last night when I got home. Had em on the ropes early and couldn't get that hit. That 9th was intense but then what a buzzkill. Epic AB with Edwin ends in strike em out throw em out DP (not liking Jose running there with an overdue Josh Donaldson on deck). Its so early but not overly impressed on D or 0 with the much hyped Martin. Pitchframing-gasms aside he hasn't blocked some balls he needs to and he just looks pretty ordinary back there. The "winner" and young pitcher whisperer that he was supposed to be? Time will tell. For f*** sakes...the bar wasn't set very high for him with JPA and Navarro. On 0 last season was an outlier imo. 7 games in you have to cut him some slack, but I hope he starts producing a hell of a lot more and soon. 5 years to go. Lets get em today men. Go Jays.
IBTrini Verified Member Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 He issued three straight two-out walks, the latter two scoring runs. He was terrible, but the offense was worse (and, credit where it's due, Odorizzi was quite good). When you hand the other team runs like that, even if they aren't the winning runs, it's unforgivable IMO. True, those walks were horrendous however that meltdown occurred in a single innings and he only gave up two runs which should not normally be insurmountable. Odorizzi pitched reasonably well however his success was also aided by the Jays hitting approach. The Rays defense was also good especially at 2B and SS. They gobbled up everything - even the single SS misplay and the ricochet off the pitcher's leg still managed to get outs. Rivera also got into the act with 2 great plays as well. It was an unfortunate start to a packed, pumped up fan base.
Sorrow Verified Member Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 It's one of those frustrating losses as the Rays didn't do any major damage, they just waited. Jays worked a fair amount of walks but their last round of at bats were terrible. No patience at all. Nice to see Donaldson's timing getting down, almost went yard on that down and away pitch. The Rays have that great strategy against the Jays of just pitching down and away, it's hard for our guys who aren't 80 grade power guys like Stanton to go the other way on low pitches for home runs. Their IF shifts always seem to work as well.

Service time for beers took forever, huge lineups and barely saw any beer vendor come down my section. watever jays fo, thanks for saving my money for me.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 Anyone here have no problem sending Bautista? I was thinking about it again - Edwin isn't a guy who will strike out a ton, and starting the runner will allow Bautista to tie the game on a double.

aselvana Verified Member Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 any notable incidents? nope. very tamed crowd. was hearing alot of stories about the 500s, fights, drunkness, etc etc. but yea, nothing notable. maybe because it took 2 innings long to get ONE BEER! it was nothing like those toonies games before the prohibition of the 500s.
wiredin Verified Member Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 the Jays are highly skilled but have too many flaws. sort of like the Leafs. why you build teams like this Canada? Leafs don't have as much skill as the Jays. And the Leafs organization is in shambles. Oilers have some really flashy hands up front, but the organization is a complete and utter joke. The Jets and Flames are just blue collar hard workers with no skill, but somehow keep it above water. Vancouver = O's. 'nough said I know nothing of the Senators and I don't watch CFL or NBA.

When I was in high school (late 90s) me and my friends always went Toonie Tuesdays. We also went on can donation nights, a 500 ticket for a Campbells soup from mom's kitchen.

I was thinking about it again - Edwin isn't a guy who will strike out a ton, and starting the runner will allow Bautista to tie the game on a double. Edwin strikes out 10% of the time. Starting the runner allows you to stay out of the double play, sends bautista from 1st to 3rd on a single with no outs, scores him on a double. Bautista isn't a burner, but on a straight steal still takes the bag at least 50% of the time and even with a strike out there's a chance he's in scoring position with 2 outs. The catcher still has to make a good throw. You think that if it's a fastball eddie makes contact and if it's a breaking ball bautista steals. The scenario of eddie missing a fastball and having a strike em out throw em out was actually very low odds. It happened, but I think the decision to send the runner was definitely the right one imo.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 Starting Bautista caused Edwin to swing at ball 4

Gaudreau will likely win rookie of the year. The flames are definitely blue collar hard workers, but they have more talent than you might think if you haven't really watched them.

Thats the way i saw it. Eddie does not K much and you can't sit back all the time and wait for the home run especially since you have not been able to get anything going.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 Starting Bautista caused Edwin to swing at ball 4 that was ball 4 but that was a pitch Edwin could have crushed.

What Devon Travis did scoring pillar is what we needed more of. Some really undisciplined at bats last night Expect to see teams keep doing that until the jays show they will go the other way.
ScientificReason Verified Member Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 the Jays are highly skilled but have too many flaws. sort of like the Leafs. why you build teams like this Toronto? This team is vastly more talented then the leafs....Not even close.

The flames are definitely blue collar hard workers, but they have more talent than you might think if you haven't really watched them. those are the flames star players yes, and they are very very good. I'm more referencing the bulk of the team which are very hard workers who are consistent. Hartley has turned the team around pretty quickly, and I'm impressed. But it's not the "star power" thats got the Flames to the post-season, its the consistency. Same with the Wild. To keep it on topic, if the Jays can get that same kind of hard working blue-collar thing going on and consistently be above average instead of a roller coaster of ups and downs then I think they will be contenders. If they rely solely on offense then we are in trouble!
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 This team is vastly more talented then the leafs....Not even close. Also, we don't have the advantage of 16 teams making the playoffs every year....
