I say a lot of crazy s*** but not sure I've ever called for a manager's head.  Could be wrong, but I don't remember doing that despite all my other sins.

Schneider should be fired September 23rd and not even come back for Cincinatti series... OK.  That may be harsh but that is what often happens.  Fire him Tuesday the 29th if they don't have the guts to do it the 23rd.

1.  Springer not playing the outfield - don't know what is happening here, and maybe there is something I don't know, but he seems to be running fine, and basically Springer not in the outfield is 100 extra at bats for Straw instead of Keys.

2. Vlad sucking - not entirely the managers fault obviously, but left him 2 or 3 all year, and could never fix it, could never get the right message through to light a fire.

3. Bullpen - completely went wild with the leverage relievers with like several on track for 80 appearances, yet with a 1-0 lead in the most important game in the year didn't even try to manage his way through it?

4.  Bieber pushed too hard - 100+ pitches with a 5-1 lead.  7 innings for a guy made of glass.  Maybe it is harsh to blame Schneider for that as not an unreasonable ask.. but on the other hand 6 innings for a starter is great, and maybe a better manager wouldn't have pushed Bieber there.

5.  Bunting too much - it's completely useless either way but could lead to hand injuries and frustration.

6.  600 runs scored with a 320 million dollar payroll.  - hitting coach fired for this first, but manager helps choose the hitting coach and get the messages across to the players.

What else?  Should he be fired?  This is my first fire the manager thread.  Maybe unfair and over-reactionary.  I do tend to over-react.  But maybe fair and others feel the same way.

I very earnestly admit that this may be over-reactionary.  On the other hand now that I think of it, the other manager I wanted fired was Cito Gaston.  Many times between 94 and 97 and 2009-2010.

Main reason was league low team on base percentage, players having horrible years (Wells, Joe Carter, Sprague) yet getting 700 PAs at the top of the order.  Cito, as a former hitting coach, was much more involved with hitting philosophy and ran his mouth about 'pull dat ball' and 'clogging the bases' (or at the very least agreed with his coaches).

So if I wanted Cito fired for running a team with a .310 on base percentage, having middle of the order bats put up a 90 wRC+ and scoring 700 runs, shouldn't I want Schneider to be fired for leading a team with a .300 on base percentage, 600 runs and middle of the order bats running a 90 wRC?

I think I support this.  It's time to try something different whether it's deserved or not.

Popkins has to go too though.  The Jays had one of the best offenses in baseball in 2021 and slowly changed the roster towards more pitching/defense - and yet fans still blamed Martinez for our offensive struggles.

Popkins lead one of the best offenses in baseball last year and we essentially rolled it back this year and now we're the worst offense in baseball - therefore it seems obvious fans should loathe his presence in the dugout and want him gone too.  Injuries to Tony, Barger, Kirk and Springer can't be the scapegoat.  Like seriously, is this the worst Blue Jays offense of all-time?  I think given the payroll and expectations, it most certainly is.  Worst offense in 50 years?  Easy decision - fire the guy.

Bring in some new punching bags so fans can b*tch and complain about the same stuff you always do.  Maybe a new mixture will help?  Sometimes it does!

I've never seen a manager do so many dumb things and have them almost always work out as much as JS in 2025. IKF pinch hitting for Barger late in a game? Probably a walk off or game tying single, or something. It was cute when it worked, but not as fun when regression hits. I'd definitely be good with a new manager, but if it's just someone who does what the FO wants, then probably won't make a huge difference.

  • Schneider is fine. He overmanages a little and he's boring, but I think that's what Ross likes. I'm more of a Gibby guy myself. Whoever we hire is probably just going to do what Ross wants anyway.
  • We could also dump Ross but I'd only do that if we have a top replacement lined up, like Erik Neander from the Rays. But would someone like Neander even take the job if he's still #2 to Shapiro? That would technically be a demotion so I doubt it.
  • If you really want to shake it up you'd have to dump Shapiro and I'm not sure why we'd do that. The off-field stuff he's overseen has been great.

So we're basically stuck until Shapiro retires, which honestly isn't that bad. You could do a lot worse.

Yeah. There probably aren't 5 guys in baseball you want more than Shapiro in Shapiro's spot. He's good at his job. For reasons I don't completely understand he comes attached to a GM who's competent but also utterly vanilla and unremarkable. You probably wouldn't have to turn over many rocks to find someone who could do a better job than Atkins, especially given how desirable this job should be in this market. But overall I think you just live with what we have - it could be much, much worse.

Shapiro may actually be the next commissioner after Manfred.

Realistically, we're all just guessing at to to how much input Atkins has on the on-field decisions.

Based on everything I've seen and heard, and inferred from decision making... it looks like all on-field decisions are made by John Schneider. Yes, there's a pile of data given to him about hitter splits, pitcher splits, who matches up well with who based on X and Y for both hitters to opposing pitchers and our pitchers to opposing hitters and there's probably very obvious decisions based on that data more often than not.

I very much doubt Atkins pours over this data daily and questions Schneider's every move or cross-checks it with decisions he would have made with that same data, but I very much assume that large decisions that end up impacting games that maybe don't match up with the data, he's going to want an explanation, as any GM in baseball would to hold his manager accountable for decision making. I would certainly want to know why Manitply was the play in a 2-1 game.

Even looking at all the decisions JS has made, the vast majority of them work out just fine, but nobody remembers the good... the good is boring. It's expected. Mantiply in a 2-1 game though??? I struggle with that one myself but we don't have all the info JS has about his player's availability. Maybe Flu is dealing with someone nagging right now and said he was at 90% even after the off day. There's any number of different reasons that may have played into it, but sure, on the surface it looks like it doesn't make sense.

Managing is not really even a leadership position in a traditional sense. He isn't on the field playing with the 26 guys in the clubhouse, he can't lead by example on the field, or be the first guy over the wall on a walkoff HR. That's on the players. It's the players game. A managers job is mainly in-game decision making, ego management in the clubhouse, keeping them pointed in the right direction and discipline when it's needed if the player leaders haven't handled it themselves. Look at Torey Lovullo right now in Arizona... having to try and keep that clubhouse together with Marte being the world's biggest twat. Is that a failure in Lovullo's leadership because Marte is a clown?

JS is a perfectly fine manager that probably impacts the game far less than ret*rds like Aaron Boone who's only job seems to be screaming at clouds.

Rosters expanded today? Better try to finish a 2-1 game after an off day with Joe Mantiply and Michael Lorenzen!

It was a 1-0 game and he'd already been gifted 2 good innings from Spaghetti guy who threw great for 2 innings because the announcer say he probably was told to throw hard for as long as he could.  And as long as he could was 2 innings as his pitches looked sloppy his 3rd inning with velocity down 2 mph.

Irony is Schneider did a great job with these games until last night.  It's like he saw Woods-Richardson get through 3 or 4 innings so tried it with Spaghetti, when any normal human would take the 2 innings and go to Fischer.

Yeah good point

He got greedy

Could have gone Fisher, Flu, Rogers, Varland for the final five innings I'm sure. I expected Rogers to get more 2 inning outings this year.

Kind of crazy.  As much as I hate Cito the good thing he did was play Lind every day second half 2008 and all of 2009 and got great production from him.

It's like if Cito walked in he might tell Springer to play left and Keys to be Lind and hit Vlad 4th or 5th, and tell Giminez to hit lead off improve his on base from horrible (.280) to horrible for leadoff (.320) (like Devon White did).

Jays best record in AL since trade deadline. With 6 starting pitchers on DL. I highly doubt this season on Schneider

Didn't you see the dumb decision he made in the 4th inning during the game last week?  Obviously he's a moron and should be fired immediately.

I can't recall but this season not on Schneider. With 6 starters on DL much of season. Vlad going AWOL. Lost Kirk, Barger and Springer for long stretches. Cut that in half this is a 90 win team.

 Clearly you don't understand.

He made a bad decision in the 4th inning last week.

Unforgiveable. He should be out of baseball and slinging eggs and hash in a truck stop diner.

Mantiply and Lorenzen were low key hero's last night, all our leverage arms are set to pitch b2b the rest of this series if need be, you guys can suck farts.

I found that the complaining about the Mantiply move in the recent Cleveland game was a little over the top. It's true that this led to the Blue Jays trailing by a larger amount than prior to his entering the game, but it didn't directly factor into the loss to any great degree as the team only scored a single run in that game. I thought it worked out later in the series in that it left all of the better leverage arms available if the game were close in the late innings.

It's probably not entirely Schneider's fault.  He has to deal with cards he's handed.    Two decisions that peeve me off.

1.  Miles replaced by Spaghetti guy -  Both are 4 inning starters, but Miles will give up 1 run, Spaghe.tti guy 3-6.  Miles might win, Spaghetti guy probably not.   Was Miles more valuable as a 4 inning starter then bullpen ?  Debatable, I am sure he gave us some key innings out of the bullpen here and there the last month.

2.  Jesus Sanchez in left -  Honestly goes back to Springer.   I guess something is going on there we don't know about.  It seems insane that he's only played 16 innings in the outfield.  He's gone 1000, 400, 16 the last few years.  Dave Winfield did 200 or so outfield innings at 40.

Are either of them Schneider's fault?  Better question is could another manager maneuver these situations better?  Would anyone recognize that Miles should be a 4 inning starter, and Springer a part-time outfielder and be able to make that happen?  Of course we never know,  Miles could get injured and Springer make more errors then Sanchez and get injured, so maybe Schneider/Front Office made the right call here.

In an idea world Miles goes to the bullpen, because 4 inning starts tax the bullpen, and better to have a guy starting who can go 6... but Spaghetti only goes 3 or 4 himself so they didn't fix that problem,  other than they can use non-leverage relievers on Spaghetti day because they are behind 5-1 or something, but with Miles it's 1-1 and they have to go to the leverage guys... so I guess the move does give the leverage guys more rest.

Olerud, Miles was a rule 5 pick up because he's only pitched 14+ innings since '22 because of injury, they're reducing his innings to keep him healthy pal, not much more to it... he'll likely see a 120+ innings next season, the Jays sold at the deadline and have run into more injuries since then, I doubt they thought they'd be in this position in the first place since the deadline.

Yeah, he won't be a "YES" man from the top were his words.

I realize this.  That is why they only let him go 3 or 4 innings.    They could have continued to do that and he would wind up only with a few more then using him as a reliever.   As a reliever he goes 2-3 innings every 5 games as a starter 3 or 4.

And did they not know the rule about the challenges at end of play?  Clear as day strike as far as I could see, play continues.  Someone should have been shouting 'challenge! challenge!' from the dug-out.  That is on the Schneider and the coaching staff if they didn't prep Kirk on the rule... if Kirk didn't think it was a strike or didn't remember the rule even though he was prepped on him.
