I don't believe this mandate would come from Rogers for profit reasons.

It would come from themselves as getting under I think is worth a prospect or two.  The penalties make you lose a pick and international signing money right?  So if they get just under one of the threshold that is like getting a prospect.

Selling is not entirely giving up either.  98 Jays.  2025 Guardians.  And I am sure many other stories.

It ain't working, reconfigure to a younger players.  Sometimes they go on a run.  

line-up post firesale.   Of course this could be a disaster.  Or it could be a normal team that takes walks, and hits homers, and has young bat speed and just acts normal for a 2020s offense, instead of the .245 .300 .360 s*** we see.  And maybe some of the things we get in there too.  (this assume Lukes, Springer, Varsho sold).

For this year, I don't think they can realistically get under any threshold that affects the draft or international signing money.

The only one they could reasonably get under is the Cohen Tax line, which just reduces the extra tax they're paying on the dollars above it.

For the closers thing, I'm not sure that Varland would have the same value as Mason Miller did given Miller is on another planet with his skills and track record, but yeah... its worth exploring.

From a purely morbid curiosity standpoint I'd also be curious as to how many fans would flip out if they traded Varland and couldnt dump Hoffman. That vitriol would be very entertaining.

There are rumors that SD is going to move Miller at the deadline...

Cruz would be an interesting acquisition. His defense is going to be very frustrating unless there's hope that he can turn it around with more reps. Where's Kevin Kiermaier outfield coach when you need him?

Probably have to accept that he's going to be an uber talented, high variance 2-3 WAR guy. Basically a bizarro Varsho / Vlad combination.

Read that the A's are receiving interest in their MLB OF's and that Henry Bolte may be seen as their CF of the future. I'm not sure where that leaves (currently injured) Toronto native Denzel Clarke, would guys be interested in acquiring him for the ++ CF defense? The bat is obviously suspect...

He could work. You'd be batting him and Gimenez toward the bottom but we could throw every remaining dollar into improving the corner OF spots and DH to get the offense in gear again.

Cruz and Vladdy on the same team would be "rip your hair out" levels of frustrating at times, but the Jays need that type of bat in the lineup. With his arm maybe see how he does in RF. There will still be stupid mistakes on defense, but the arm would play nicely there.

Lawrence Butler went from looking like a young superstar (who the A's locked up) to a complete bust who's signed until 2031 🥴

Denzel Clarke would be a great target if the price was right.  Obvious the defense is already there, but he has all kinds of tools with the bat too - he's just so raw there's a high probability the bat never develops.  Ideally we'd pencil him in as a 4th OFer and see if he can develop into a starter.

Gelof would be an interesting target.  His bat has rebounded after he sh*t the bed in 2024 and 2025 (after his strong 2023 rookie campaign).  Utility guy who's hitting lefties well this year - which would fill a need for this team. I kind of assumed he'd always crushed lefties, but it appears that isn't true.  He's actually been awful v. LHP until this season, so who knows.

Not an OFer, but it's wild how bad Brent Rooker's been this year too.

No issues with acquiring Clarke (defense is elite, dude had a 1.3 WAR in 2025 in 159 PA due to his defense/base running alone), and CF is a very difficult position to fill in general, but it would be tough to have him and Gimenez both in the lineup at the same time, and Clarke's bat is also not good. He'd be more of a fit in Straw's current role. Kinda hoping there is a bad contract swap with Gimenez available somewhere. Get rid of some of the s***** hitters on the roster.

I like the model of being built around great defense up the middle. In theory I think you can easily get away with lighter hitting/elite defender types in the 8-9 spots but that's contingent on your 1-7 holding their weight.
