The question of the year: was the opposing pitching good last night, or are the Red Sox just that bad?

I think there's a good chance Varland is unavailable today.  4 in 5 days, including a 30 pitch outing in there is really pushing it.  Rogers would be 4 in 5 days as well.  Let's hope the offense steps up and the high leverage guys get a rest.

I'm not sure if Rogers has those same restrictions. Sure, he probably shouldn't be throwing on 3 consecutive days except on emergencies, but I'm not sure if there's the same need for concern with him throwing 4 out of 5 days. He's old and might get general body soreness but it's not like his arm is under extreme duress to warrant the same worry.

100%  That's why I just mentioned him after Varland.  I'd be quite surprised if they used Varland tonight.  Less surprised if Rogers pitched.

I hope Piñango is back in the lineup today.  I'd like to see what the young guy can do.

Also, do you think Straw is a viable leadoff hitter if we get the 2021 version of him?  I know that's Springer's spot, but having Straw's speed at the top would be nice.  Not sure what kind of OBP is ideal for a leadoff hitter.  Springer can hit behind Oka in the 5 spot.

hope they test miles with some high leverage innings

Varland will definitely be available today. JS had Hoffman pitching 4 in 5 days on five separate occasions in 2025. I don't think that's going to deter how JS uses the pen. It probably should (overuse might be a reason for Hoffman's issues last season, at least partly), but it won't be.

What kind of OBP is ideal for a lead off hitter?  The higher the better.

All things considered,  I think if Varland stays in the closing role it will be better for him (ie. less innings pitched) in terms of overall innings pitched vs his 2025 appearances.  Sure he will get his appearances but I believe John Schneider won't use him multiple innings.   Now he can go out there with the knowledge he is a one inning guy for the most part and just HAM.

No, I do not think Straw is a viable leadoff hitter.  He's not a viable starting player.  He's a 4th OF/defensive replacement.

I'd also like to see Pinango get some more at bats.  We've just been facing a barrage of lefties as of late.

I think Fisher, Miles, Hoffman, Fluharty, and Rogers are all in play.

Big game today, to lose a home series to them when we miss Crochet would be a disappointment.

Hopefully our offense can run up a big lead.
