Slade Old-Timey Member Posted March 29 Posted March 29 Someone tell me how to feel about Dub Gleed? I think the bonus pool money is good, essentially giving us a shot to add another 16 year old Jimenez.

Laika Community Moderator Posted March 29 Posted March 29 School: UC Irvine Commit/Drafted: Never Drafted Age At Draft: 21.9 Gleed is a 6-foot-1, 200-pound infielder and righthanded hitter who has been a solid contact bat for UC Irvine over the past three seasons. He had a career-best season this spring where he slashed .351/.469/.550 with nearly as many walks as strikeouts and six homers in 34 games. Hamstring injuries plagued his season and caused him to miss time. Gleed is a contact hitter who did a nice job staying within the strike zone this spring and while he has solid raw power he projects to be a below-average hitter with below-average power in games in pro ball. Primarily a third baseman this spring, Gleed has played all over the infield (as well as DH when he was injured) and scouts are mixed on whether he fits best at third, second or left, where his below-average speed could limit him. His contact skills could make him a day three sort of prospect

He jumped multiple levels last season (im not counting the 1 game at AAA) and settled at AA with a 124 wRC+ as a 22 year old. Guy didnt even rate in their top 60 according to fangraphs last year.

Laika Community Moderator Posted March 29 Posted March 29 He's probably nothing of course BUT Dub has a cool name and honestly he seems kind of like a Caleb Durbin lite to me. Worse speed and defense but I don't see why a 6 foot guy with some homers can't be coached into like 45 pop

Apparently he's also added 20 lbs since being drafted. Highly doubtful he plays MI at the ML level.

Like until very recently these guys would show up in some short season league after getting drafted and beat the s*** out of it. Seems like something changed just recently, and these guys are kind of sent to the high performance center instead of games after getting drafted. At the same age Vlad and Bo and were about 2 years away. I think __IF__ he is going to be good he's 2 years away. There's a high chance he'll fail because most do. The great talents often show up fast and the beat the s*** out of every league they are in... if they don't show up fast it often means they aren't good. (always exceptions either way). Kevin Ahrens still hasn't made it.
Olerud363.354 Verified Member Posted March 30 Posted March 30 One hill I'll die on, and said about Nimmala (and got a lot of push back on the old board) is that if a guy is a someone they should destroy the first league they are sent to. Like they should hit like prime Mike Trout if he was sent to Colorado for 6 weeks. If they don't it already puts a ceiling on them. I don't believe the scouts can tell 100% what they have (like Bo wasn't a first round guy) and high school and college stats can't quite capture it. However the first 6 weeks in the Appalachian league in Buff-Fudge no where tell you a lot.

There were plenty of scouts who thought Bo had 1st round talent, they just didn't buy his approach of "swing at everything even vaguely close to the strike zone" and weird swing at the time would play in pro ball. However the first 6 weeks in the Appalachian league in Buff-Fudge no where tell you a lot. It is obviously true, there are just so many caveats. Generally true though. Caveats: A player could struggle or at least "not destroy" a level because of some kind of injury or other problem that we aren't aware of; Some players do get stuck in flawed mechanics or approaches, and that could send the wrong signal I mean Aaron Judge had a .777 OPS at 23 in his first taste of AA and AAA, with 144 Ks in 124 games. So he decidedly did NOT destroy but that obviously did NOT put a ceiling on him. That's not the low minors but there are similar examples. Bobby Witt had a 83 wRC+ in rookie ball at 19. Ceiling on Witt? That being said I do agree! If you are hunting for superstars, you want that small sample size signal of destroying the low minors as an 18 year old, or whatever. That's a common signal that most true superstars would share. Most, not all.
