This morning, Buster Olney of ESPN reported that the Blue Jays had made another offer to Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Not much later, Héctor Gómez reported that the offer would be for 14 of 15 years and in the range of $550-600 million. The big question that has not yet been answered is how much deferred money the contract includes. That's important because it will determine the actual value of the deal. In the meantime, it looks like Guerrero's contract will remain top of mind throughout Opening Day.

Scary. This won’t be as bad as the Strasburg contract but in a couple of years this will be the most untradeable contract in MLB if he gets over 400.

Wonder how long before the mainstream media starts to ask “should the blue jays sign Bo and not Vladdy”

Steamer/ZiPS now projecting Vlad to finish with 4.4 fWAR in his age-26 season. Tied for 22nd in the league. I can't stress enough how silly it would be to give this player 500M

Depth Charts ROS

Vlad 4.4 fWAR
Gimenez 4.3 fWAR
Bichette 3.8 fWAR
Kirk 3.8 fWAR

Dude is literally in the same class of player as Kirk, who extended for $58M, Gimenez, who cost nothing but Spooner Horvats, and Bo Bichette who the Blue Jays apparently have no interest in extending at any cost.

The team shouldn't even be engaging in the delusion that he's in the Soto/Ohtani tier of player. If he's demanding 400+M let him to try get it in free agency.

If he's not going to give us:

  • any sort of hometown discount
  • any sort of credit for securing the deal prior to him hitting FA

then what is the point of signing him right now? It'd be better to let him hit FA and let that determine his market value.

He's got to take some risk himself.

100% this.

Hopefully Shatkins has pulled their 500M offer

They’re confident they’re going to get it done

Which is just so freaking dumb but checks out

I honestly can’t wait to watch Vlad waltz into FA after a 4 WAR season thinking teams are going to pay him 40M+

I really want to see this happen. 135 wRC+ season and waiting for a 600M offer.

Honestly I don't even think it's Shatkins at this point. A FO as obsessed with their own valuations as they are going that high for Vlad is not like them at all. I'm guessing it's probably an ownership call now, and thankfully Vlad's ego is so big he turned down a deal that would have been a disaster for the Jays.

Even talking to the casual fan about Vlad's contract expectations they view the whole scenario differently now as well lol.

I would gladly keep him at what he deserves to make. But if he wants to get paid like a generational player he can go make that money elsewhere. I don't know who does it but please don't let it be us.

There is a good chance he’s already turned down the biggest offer he will receive

From a purely spectator standpoint I want to see this happen. I want to see how he’s valued throughout the league

He has no intrinsic value to any other team besides Toronto. Ya he’s like sort of famous because the MLB is always marketing him as one of their stars amongst guys like Witt and Ohtani but I can’t believe that would influence other front offices to go nuts signing him

I sincerely hope that he doesn’t come near the number the Jays just offered him, and I hope the next offer they table is 100 million less. I hope he never sees a contract starting with the number 5 ever again.

Maybe then he’ll finally realize he isn’t as special as he thinks he is.

It would hilarious if he ends up getting offered like 10/360

That’s honestly closer to his worth and realistically what he SHOULD get. And even then, he could easily end up as one of the most overpaid players in the league if he maintains the inconsistency

I just cannot handle the Vlad discourse. People have lost their minds. Normally reasonable people.

Eno Sarris a couple of weeks ago basically slammed the Blue Jays for not having extended Vlad. He said on their podcast that he thinks someone gives Vlad $500m in free agency.

People on this message board say things like "the Blue Jays messed up and never made a reasonable offer to Vlad."

Meanwhile, 5+ WAR, 21 year old superstar Jackson Merrill is extending for $135m guaranteed. Ketel Marte, another 5+ WAR star, is selling future free agent years for like $22m.

The Blue Jays did nothing wrong and I hope they don't cave.

I don't even want him anymore. Spend the money on other dudes. Extend Easton Lucas.

I'm trying to imagine the piece of humble pie Vlad will have to eat of he has a 2-3 fWAR season.

I mean, there's no doubt he would eat that slice and probably the whole pie, but..it would be entertaining.

Problem is, that likely sucks for the Jays playoff chances unless everything else goes perfectly
