So as of right now, it looks like Roden makes the team.

Normally it would make sense to manipulate his service time but there's too much riding on this season to probably not go with your best players period

Not a good enough prospect to bother thinking about service time optimization

And yet he's good enough to start for this team on opening day when he hasn't even had a full year at AAA?

Yes. What's weird about that?

There are like, ten prospects in baseball at any given time where teams should reasonably think hard about service time stuff.

Roden is probably in a platoon if he makes the team anyway

Roden is also 25, not likes young and really needs to learn that much.

Also an extra year of control when you are past your prime at 32 doesn’t mean that much when his outcome could be like a 3 War platoon OF. Like Joc Pederson would be a best case scenario and he’s signing like short term deals for 15-20M

The only thing with Roden is that Barger and Wagner are also interesting lefties.

I agree that messing with Roden's service time isn't a big deal, but I guess I'd rather take the extra year than not.

So unless they think he can win ROTY I might start him off in MiLB and let Barger and Wagner (and frankly Springer as well) show what they've got for 3 weeks.

Unless there is a way to find playing time for all 3 of them?

Its interesting, 2 years ago the Jays couldn't find playable left handed hitters anywhere. Now they have at least 3 regulars in Taters, Giminez and Varsho, and 3 possible strong side options in Barger, Wagner and Roden, without clear paths to playing time for all of them.

Granted, it's entirely probable 2 of the 3 will suck, and the 3rd winds up being a decent platoon option only, but... gotta figure it out somehow

Clement has certainly earned his place initially but even his playing time is going to go south with Giminez in their at 2b.

Basically it's Clement at 3b against any lefties, with Schneider maybe being 2b if they choose to sit Gimenez, though his career splits are virtually neutral. Against RHP...Barger/Wagner at 3b, Giminez at 2b, with Schneider as the PH, followed by Clement going in defensively.

Roden's path to any playing time initially looks like LH DH. I find it unlikely the starting day lineup has Roden in the OF even if Varsho can't go by then. They'd probably keep Taters and Springer in LF/RF and Berroa or Lukes manning CF temporarily.

Oh and then there's that Loperfido guy...make that 4 semi-regular LHH

Yeah there's no reason to manipulate Roden's service time. He's already 25 and he's not going to be a superstar or anything. The team could easily find playing time for him at the big league level by cycling Roden, Taters, and Springer between DH/LF/RF but I don't think they actually want to do that. It's possible Tony and/or Springer don't want to DH much, and the Jays have a great reputation with veteran players over the years largely because they kowtow to them. Wagner probably makes more sense to them as a primary DH since he's not a good defensive player anywhere and has versatility (2B, 1B, 3B), and Barger can (cos)play 3B, so between that and already being on the 40 man roster, he might have the edge over Roden as well. Realistically, the main road block for Roden's path is Springer.

Vladdy's defence is horrible, low IQ

Vlad is just a dumb player all-around. Still hasn’t learned to run the bases properly after all these years, and still thinks hitting oppo singles is a good strategy even though he possesses 40+ homer potential

I think I’d rather have Roden over Loperfido in CF and live with the downgrade on defence. Loperfido really just doesn’t look like he can hit enough to warrant playing time at the MLB level.

Roden could be their 4th best hitter so I dont think you want to get too cute with roster decisions when every game is going to matter a ton given the logjam of projected win totals in the AL east. April they are playing a ton of good teams too, so it’s super important to get off to a good start.

If Varsho isn't ready amd they don't want to DH him, you definitely wouldn't stick a 25 year old with 5 total games of CF experience out there.

If anything you'd throw Springer back in CF and Roden in RF or something. Or..just let the kid DH. No need to force him into one the most important defensive positions on the diamond.

Yeah I think Springer in CF probably a more likely scenario. I just feel Loperfido over Roden would be a mistake.

Sounds like Varsho won’t be a DH and will only be activated once he can play CF, which I agree with.

I can see why the Yankees were quick to move Ben Rice off C at the MLB level. I don't think I've seen him block one pitch in the dirt cleanly.

Bo with another no doubter bomb to CF. He looks healthy at the plate.

Davis Schneider home run off Aaron Nola (106 EV). He had a quote recently talking about how he was trying to hit singles last season which wasn't his game, and he's going back to trying to do "damage". Would be nice if he has a bounce back season.

lol @ hitting singles approach for a guy who has near perfect launch angles when he connects and doesn't have the hit tool to put bat to ball consistently.

Rainer Nunez hit a 416 ft HR with an exit velo of 110.9 mph. Easy to see why he's still in the org despite the fact that his performance as a 1B only guy has been pretty underwhelming. There's big power there if he's able to lift the ball with frequency.
