Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted February 6, 2025 Posted February 6, 2025 Thought this deserved its own thread here because of all the Alonso talk, the dream is over :(
BB17 Verified Member Posted February 6, 2025 Posted February 6, 2025 It’s clear he always wanted to go back to the Mets and didn’t want to ever come to Toronto. That contract is pretty weak for him lol. M.E., Stangstag, itaos and 1 other 4
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted February 6, 2025 Posted February 6, 2025 I didn't love the fit - but I loved the bat. f*** sakes.
Laika Community Moderator Posted February 6, 2025 Posted February 6, 2025 I dunno dudes. The more I thought about it the less sense it made. Outbidding the Mets for a 2.5 WAR one dimensional 30 year old milk bag would have been desperate wilko, Funky, Spanky__99 and 1 other 2 1 1
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted February 6, 2025 Posted February 6, 2025 This might indicate the Jays will sign Vlad. Though the pragmatic side of me says says it would have been done by now if they were even close.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted February 6, 2025 Posted February 6, 2025 Lol f***er. That’s such a s*** deal, Jays definitely offered more. Ah well…. Bregman plz
Laika Community Moderator Posted February 6, 2025 Posted February 6, 2025 $30M in 2025 $24M for 2026 Can opt out next year
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted February 6, 2025 Posted February 6, 2025 Now Bregman can sign with the Tigers and the off season will be complete Horses Fart 1
glory Old-Timey Member Posted February 6, 2025 Posted February 6, 2025 The home runs would have been nice but realistically it wasn’t a great fit, especially if Vlad had to play a lot of 3B. That’s a great price for the Mets, though. Funky and max silver 2
BTS Community Moderator Posted February 6, 2025 Posted February 6, 2025 Team feels incomplete. Need either Bregman or a couple of relief upgrades. jaysblue, Delete_My_Account_Thanks, Stangstag and 1 other 4

He’d need to put up a 140 wRC+ to be offered a 3+ year deal.

Ya I've been saying 1 more big bat to truly complete the team. Jays adding Hoffman, Garcia, Sandlin and then moving Rodriguez to the bullpen is enough for me. Delete_My_Account_Thanks and Stangstag 2

I'm not sure we need relief upgrades (I wouldn't turn them down). We definitely need 1 more big bat though. Bregman is perfect, but I suppose someone like JDM would at least help. Jays24 1
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted February 6, 2025 Posted February 6, 2025 No more big bats left, at least not the kind that can mash 40+ Have to add wins somewhere else. Maybe we get lucky and a guy like Barger or Orelvis fill the big bat void
JaysfaninFL Verified Member Posted February 6, 2025 Posted February 6, 2025 Assuming he exercises his option, he'll be 32 for his next contract. Even if he maintains his career norms in 2025-2026, he won't find anything like the offers he got this time around. Blew a golden opportunity IMO. But I agree its clear he wanted nothing to do with Toronto. Jays really need a huge bounceback year from Bo now as well as at least one either player to have a career year or hit a new level (Varsho?).

Curious if there is a trade out there for a hitter. The RP market still has useful arms so that’s a more likely way to add impact to this roster. Bregman obviously is a great fit for what the Jays need but 6 years for a 31 year old is a long damn time.

That's the part that's going to kill us... hoping for a career year from a guy like Varsho. I've seen enough for the past 2 seasons to have no expectations of that. This team needs to find a big bat through external means.
Funky Verified Member Posted February 6, 2025 Posted February 6, 2025 It was hard to believe that he was gonna leave there, especially once they signed Soto. I hope we turn our attachment to Bregman as the term not makes sense but the position he plays and the on base percentage does. Maybe with Bregman in the fold, we could bring up Martinez to sit at DH and mash Jays24 1

Bo - Bregman - Vlad - Santandar- J.D. - Springer - Varsho - Kirk - Gimenez One of the best offensive/defensive teams in the AL.
Masterbather Verified Member Posted February 6, 2025 Posted February 6, 2025 Don't really care, didn't really want him, don't want Bregman either. Max I'm good with, but otherwise I still don't know what the hell we're trying to do here. wilko 1
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted February 6, 2025 Posted February 6, 2025 It seems obvious that we never made him a legitimate offer, given this news.

I don’t think that’s the case, from all reports Jays have had the highest offer on the table for a while. He clearly went back to the Mets and took a lesser deal. Maybe the Jays weren’t offering an opt-out after year 1, or maybe he just had 0 interest in actually coming to Toronto. Spanky__99 1
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted February 6, 2025 Posted February 6, 2025 Well if Boras was holding off on getting Alonso and Bregman signed until they both had deals, the Bregman announce is imminent. Might be up late tonight
