Predictable ending but the Straw trade made me believe slightly. I didn’t think any team would absorb $11M for one of the worst players in baseball on a pipe dream. Atkins is built different I guess.

I mean they took on a bad contract to get a $2M international prospect. Something a rebuilding team with money should do anyway. I guess.

Way to go Ross...

He did the most boring thing he could do and that’s what makes me sad. But at the same time I can’t really blame him. It’s not good for Baseball. But at the same time what can they really do about it.

I somewhat admire Shatkins going balls deep to try and make it happen.

Always the BFF, never the one they want to marry and f***.

Actual salary cap

International draft

I never really disliked the Dodgers but the last two or three seasons they’ve become the new Evil Empire. It reminds me so much of the late 90s through 2000s Yankees where they just spend spend spend.

I’ve thought for a while that baseball needs a hard salary cap, with a floor, deferrals should be limited to no more than 10% of the contract per season, IFA should be subject to an international draft.

Salary cap only punishes the players not the owners.

Set a hard cap of like $250m with a floor of $150m so teams can’t just be cheap f***s and actually have to pay players. A cap hurts top end talent but a floor helps lower to middle tier players.

If they reallocate the $2M to 1 or 2 interesting international players, then yeah, they used their money to add to the farm system, so that's a win, especially for a team with a bottom 10 system. Not sure I'd want to have $5M less to spend on the big league roster in 2025 when the goal is to contend, but competing is a pipe dream anyway in all likelihood, so probably won't make a difference.

MLB needs to introduce a salary cap and abolish deferred salaries.

How about an international draft

Why are you guys bitching about salary caps!!!??? The Dodgers signed him to a minor league contract and he is not eligible for arb until 2 years. The IFA pool is already capped and had penalties and restrictions.

The choice of the Dodgers in this case was not money.

If the Dodgers don't spend unlimited and defer a shift to, they don't have the roster they currently have, making the team less actrative to Sasaki. So while he didn't pick the Dodgers for the money he's getting, the money they spend influences it

Jays would be f***ed even worse.. they spend 250M for a 84 win team.

This is so disappointing.  Not because we didnt get him, but because it almost looked like there was a real plan for this team.

Sign Sasaki, sign a couple of offensive players,  extend vladdy.  Lots of possibilities and as usual the Jays end up signing an overpriced, underproducer.  For what?

What exactly has chasing the unattainable accomplished.
and who is responsible.  Maybe it was Rogers and not Shatkins, and if that is the case, this team is lost.  Either way, a real disappointment.

Sorry but you guys are morons for getting your hopes up and thinking he was ever even considering a team other than the Dodgers.

I’m honestly about done with baseball. This will be the first time in over a decade I don’t get the MLB.TV package.

IPTV perhaps?

I don't think anyone was expecting him to come here with anything other than a "wink-wink nudge-nudge" sarcasm to their voice.

It's more the disappointment/frustration that this type of thing keeps happening over and over, with nothing being done about it. Sasaki does not go to the Dodgers (or at least is less likely to) if they don't construct a superteam via loopholing with deferrals and no owner limits on spending.

Just expect every player coming over from Japan to sign with the Dodgers at this point, and be pleasantly surprised if we nab one.

I think he would have gone to the Dodgers regardless.

The dodgers are one of the smartest teams and have some of the best tools for players in player development. Sure they’re a big market but Friedman did the same thing in Tampa before going to LA.

For me it wasn't believing Roki was signing here, but rather me trying to rationalize the Straw trade. Like, how does that trade make any sense if they didn't have an agreement with Sasaki? If the Jays were going to turn around and trade Vlad in order to start the rebuild, then it would make more sense, but this is a team that's going to be tax payers in order to try to compete in 2025. Just strange all the way around.
