Ryu In My House Verified Member Posted October 17, 2025 Author Posted October 17, 2025 They Jays have some interesting free agents after this season. I think the Jays make a strong offer for Justin Bieber. I hope the Jays have strong interest in bringing back Dominguez. Before last night's game, I thought Scherzer was washed. Now I am interested in a 1-year deal to bring him back. I do not think Bassitt comes back, and I think Berrios may opt out (IIRC). So 1 more year of Max may really work well. IKF and France will not be back. I don't think the Jays can afford a long-term Bo contract, but I have no idea what happens there.

It's whether or not they want to pay him that much is that question. Its certainly not from a lack of resources.
Ryu In My House Verified Member Posted October 17, 2025 Author Posted October 17, 2025 I’m not sure people realize just how much the luxury tax mechancis might be restricting what the Jays can commit long term. The Jays barely avoided a tax penalty in 2024 by trimming payroll (ending ~$233.9M), and going over the 2025 threshold (~$241M) opens them up to stiff penalties, especially if they do it repeatedly. Right now, management has some breathing room — they’re projected ~$13M under the 2025 limit after arbitration and contract commitments. But a big extension for Bo might blow that wiggle room away, risking them going into the second- or third-tier tax zone. That’s a serious deterrent. In short, I think an extension is unlikely. But who knows.
Laika Community Moderator Posted October 17, 2025 Posted October 17, 2025 Gausman Yesavage Lauer Berrios Francis? lol Varland? lol Macko lol Tiedemann? lol Bloss (second half lol) They need two MLB starters. Ideally one to slot in as an SP3 and then one more who can bump Berrios/Lauer to SP5/SP6. They also need to pad the depth. Berrios is never opting out. Max Scherzer will retire and I don't have any interest in him one year older. I'd take Bassitt back on a one year deal, if he is willing, but there will be better options out there so he's not on the top of my list.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted October 17, 2025 Posted October 17, 2025 I think people are forgetting the Jays have a ton of money coming off the books this off-season. Revenue after this Post Season run will be off the charts. And they went after the riches free agents. They definitely don't want to be in the highest tax bracket. But they will skate around it. I think the Jays are 100 percent going to be adding a premium starter this off-season. Whether its retaining Bieber or someone else. And if they don't bring back Bo I would think they would get involved in one of the other bats for sure.

Key contracts expiring after 2025 According to MLB / team-reporting, here are some of the major Blue Jays salaries set to expire after the 2025 season: Chris Bassitt — ~$22 million MLB.com+1 Bo Bichette — ~$17.6 million MLB.com+1 Max Scherzer — ~$15 million (one-year deal) MLB.com+2BetMGM+2 Chad Green — ~$10.5 million MLB.com Erik Swanson — ~$3 million MLB.com If you sum those up alone, you get roughly $68–69 million of payroll relief (gross) just from those five names.

Don't forget Bieber's player option and buyout. Obviously IKF, France, and Dominguez are all free agents as well but the Blue Jays weren't on the hook for much of those remaining salaries. I think bringing back Bassit as a back end Starter makes sense. His market dictates a 1-year $15 million dollar deal. He might get a multi year deal elsewhere but he seems to want to stay here and might take a haircut. If you can't bring back Bieber... Framber Valdez, Ranger Suarez, Dylan Cease, Michael King, and Zac Gallen are all out there. The Jays have been linked to Cease a lot in the past. I would think the Jays would be motivated to add Left-handed starter considering its very high right-handed rotation. Go into next season with a rotation of Gausman Bieber or Cease Yesavage Berrios Bassit It's not terrible but I think they might go after 2 Starters.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted October 17, 2025 Posted October 17, 2025 That’s a lot of money to spend Certainly need to bring in two starters. Probably one on a multi year deal and another one year signing like Scherzer. No need to get tunnel vision on Bieber either, Ross will let the market play out as he always does Spanky__99 1
Ray Verified Member Posted October 17, 2025 Posted October 17, 2025 Beyond the payroll coming off the books, this is not factoring any added dollars ownership might want to put into this team coming off a deep playoff run. Like if you think about it, Rogers actually has more asymmetric incentive to invest into the Jays being a playoff team than almost any other team. Why? Because on top of the share of regular US-based broadcasting rights they are receiving which every team receives, the share of gate and merchandising that is also equally split between teams, they also have to be raking in cash from the Canadian portion of the broadcast since they own the Canadian broadcasting rights for the MLB (and the Jays if they are in the playoffs). They are likely pocketing nearly 100% of ad spend for these Canadian broadcasts. It's almost doubly lucrative to them for the Jays making the playoffs than almost any other team (probably less than double given Canadian marketing ad spend is not as high as US plus the exchange rate sucks right now, but you get the idea). Ray Verified Member Posted October 17, 2025 Posted October 17, 2025 As for offseason, I think they need to aim for an SP1-type player. Gausman is another year older and heading into free agency after next year. Yesavage is exciting, but you don't want to rely on him being a #1 until he proves it. So I would say you need to sign one of Bieber, Framber, Ranger Suarez, or Cease. Cease would be great, but if they don't want to invest that much in a pitcher, then Bieber is probably your best option. I can see a 3 year $90M deal for Bieber with an opt-out after 1 year or something. Seems like a nice balance between risk/reward for him, and still allows him to test the market.

Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted October 17, 2025 Posted October 17, 2025 This deep run the Jays are on, a team that is roughly 90% under control and coming back again, a stellar defense, and the ability to spend big money likely makes the Jays an enticing team for starting pitchers to sign with. Bieber with a front row seat right now too. Gives up 2 runs in the 1st, next thing he knows he's up 12-2 mid game in the ALCS. He's gotta be liking that. I could see the Jays signing a top of the rotation type, and then trading for a reclamation project type of guy that they can get for pennies on the dollar and then help fix him. Someone like Alcantara maybe.
