Omar Old-Timey Member Posted July 8, 2024 Posted July 8, 2024 (edited) Too soon? I think not. Last year it was started even earlier in July and was highlighted by the Jays acquisition of Paul Dejong:p. This year's deadline can/will impact the direction of this franchise for near future. All that remains is how aggressive the Jays will be . Some of the no brainer moves should involve: Richards Garcia Kikuchi Jansen The four above absolutely must be moved and in a sellers market there will be demand. Also to be moved with no expectation of tangible return should be: Keirmaier Turner Just get what you can and move some payroll if possible. A Bichette trade will be seismic but unlikely based on Atkins recent comments. Gausman and Bassitt should be on the block but who knows. I assume Shapiro and co. will have a firm hand on the wheel for this trade deadline so it might be different. Not an all out fire-sale but There Will Be Blood. Edited July 9, 2024 by Omar
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted July 8, 2024 Posted July 8, 2024 I basically agree with all of this but I'm not sure how much we will get for Yimi, Richards and Jansen. -Yimi is banged up and he doesn't have a very long track record of being that great. -Richards is the type of guy who is a decent regular season pitcher but he might not throw many innings in the playoffs with all the off days. -I read somewhere (can't remember where) that Catchers rarely fetch much at the deadline either as teams are hesitant to mess with the staff chemistry midseason. All 3 should get us something, just not sure it will be that much. Kikuchi should be able to crack the Top 3 of plenty of playoff contender's rotations. I think he could get something decent.

Biggest deadline deal for a catcher was probably Lucroy to Cleveland, but he ended up vetoing the trade lol. I remember the prospect package was sizable. Jansen is not on that level, unfortunately his numbers are dogshit right now. So yeah I could see maybe getting 1 interesting prospect, but likely not a 50fv guy.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted July 8, 2024 Posted July 8, 2024 Last year Jordan Montgomery and Chris Stratton got SS Thomas Saggese (40+ FV), RHP Tekoah Roby (50 FV) and LHP John King (middle reliever). Kikuchi and Yimi would probably be a similar package.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 8, 2024 Posted July 8, 2024 I'd like to extend Jansen And keep Yariel, and keep at least 2 of Berrios, Gausman and Bassitt
hanton Old-Timey Member Posted July 8, 2024 Posted July 8, 2024 Kikuchi has to be one of the better SP's on the market right now - Atkins better not mess this up
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted July 9, 2024 Posted July 9, 2024 I'd like to extend Jansen And keep Yariel, and keep at least 2 of Berrios, Gausman and Bassitt Why not trade him then sign him back??

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted July 9, 2024 Posted July 9, 2024 I'd like to extend Jansen And keep Yariel, and keep at least 2 of Berrios, Gausman and Bassitt Why?
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted July 9, 2024 Posted July 9, 2024 Why? If there’s aspirations of competing next year, can’t trade away our entire rotation. I don’t see this front office going “nuclear rebuild”, so I would doubt more than 1 of them get moved. More likely none of them are moved.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted July 9, 2024 Posted July 9, 2024 Trade em all and just fill the rotation with geezers next year Wacha, Cobb, Gibson, Severino, Kelly, Wood, Miley, Pivetta are all FA this offseason If you moved out 60M in SP salary you can probably sign three of those guys for almost half
Ryu In My House Verified Member Posted July 9, 2024 Posted July 9, 2024 I'd like to extend Jansen And keep Yariel, and keep at least 2 of Berrios, Gausman and Bassitt I would prefer trading him for a decent prospect and then re-signing him in the off-season. He gets to learn another team's systems, and brings that knowledge back. But yeah, I really try to re-sign him after. Tell his agent it's best for him (playoffs?) and the Jays to do this.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted July 9, 2024 Posted July 9, 2024 Arguably Kikuchi and Garcia are better than Montgomery and Stratton. Montgomery was pretty solid last year. 4.3 WAR last season and previous years had 2.7 and 3.2 WAR seasons. Kikuchi's career high was 2.6 WAR last season and before that was quite awful. Arguably, Montgomery at last years trade deadline was a better arm than Kikuchi at this trade deadline.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted July 9, 2024 Posted July 9, 2024 I'd like to extend Jansen And keep Yariel, and keep at least 2 of Berrios, Gausman and Bassitt If they could trade Berrios, that would be ideal. Get rid of that crippling contract! Would prefer to keep Gausman and Bassitt around for 2025. Doubt they trade Yariel given they signed him to a 5 year deal last offseason.

They can patch up the rotation easily if they traded Berrios. Let's just hope he doesn't sign Tanner Roark or Chase Anderson.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 9, 2024 Posted July 9, 2024 Why? Don't want a drawn out teardown
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted July 9, 2024 Posted July 9, 2024 Why not trade him then sign him back?? Yeah I agree that would be wise but we might just need to let him go. This team has so many holes that if we want to compete next year we can use that money elsewhere and just roll with Kirk and a guy like Phil Clarke as the backup. Just bat Kirk 7th or 8th and take what you can get out of his bat; at least he gives us elite D. Clarke is a lefty who can take walks. Just try and hide him against lefties and he should hit ok.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted July 9, 2024 Posted July 9, 2024 I would obviously trade Berrios if we could but his contract shouldn't be too bad of an albatross as long as he's healthy. The option years look ugly at 24 mil but they still just count for 18.7 AAV for tax purposes. It's hard to fill a rotation with 5 guys so as long as he can give us 1+ WAR a year it's not going to kill us at an 18.7 AAV. The guy can eat up innings, he looks to keep himself in great shape, and his contract ends at age 34 which isn't great but not dire.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted July 9, 2024 Posted July 9, 2024 I could see Berrios being shopped in the off season if someone like Click or some other actual nerd took over, but if it's the same FO trying to put together a winning team in 2025, then I just don't see any of the top 3 (Gausman, Bassitt, Berrios) being moved. Tiedemann is still a big question mark, Manoah is hurt, and they don't seem in any rush to promote Macko (unless I missed it) who is the only other pitching prospect in the org with a pulse, so they will need innings from others. I'd bring Jansen back as well, whether by extending him now or trading him + bringing him back as a FA. His 2024 season has been disappointing (last 120 PA or so have been horrendous), but I think the offensive profile is worth betting on, especially now if his price has dropped due to a dip in performance. If you can get him at an AAV around $10m or slightly less, then it's a no brainer. But depends on what his market is. I'm really curious who is the one making the deals at the deadline. Atkins is obviously the GM but if his standing with the org is on thin ice then it doesn't make sense for him to make these deals.

Really depends on Jansen's cost, but yeah idk if we have the luxury to roster a potentially pricey catcher with a 50/50 injury chance
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted July 9, 2024 Posted July 9, 2024 There's pretty much a few types of guys the Jays have right now given their record and situation... the "must move" guys like ... any pending FA that's healthy. Then there's the "could move to shed money and might actually get something useful but not upper tier back" ... like Bassitt, Gausman, Green Then there's the "probably should try to move because it looks like they aren't signing any extension, but there's no real urgency to do it right now because they'd be selling low and can look at it again in the offseason" ..... Bo Then there's the rest of them.... that are either virtually untradeable (Springer - due to contract, Vlad due to no way anyone pays the Jays asking price) or may as well keep since they have to field a team next year and need at least some competency somewhere... Varsho, Kirk, Genesis, Pearson, any Pre-Arb guys, Yariel etc.
hanton Old-Timey Member Posted July 10, 2024 Posted July 10, 2024 Kikuchi is a TORP, let that sink in
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted July 10, 2024 Posted July 10, 2024 Kikuchi is a TORP, let that sink in Nobody is going to look at him as a top of the rotation guy but this was a great start for him as we inch closer to the deadline
hanton Old-Timey Member Posted July 10, 2024 Posted July 10, 2024 Nobody is going to look at him as a top of the rotation guy but this was a great start for him as we inch closer to the deadline eager to see what Atkins will get for him
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted July 10, 2024 Posted July 10, 2024 eager to see what Atkins will get for him Me too. BAL, NYY, CLE, HOU, LAD, MIL at minimum all will be looking to add to their rotation.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted July 10, 2024 Posted July 10, 2024 Me too. BAL, NYY, CLE, HOU, LAD, MIL at minimum all will be looking to add to their rotation. Dodgers have a bunch of injuries to the rotation and want every good Japanese player in the Majors, so I think that’s where he ends up. Plus they have a bunch of ready or near ready prospects/young players, and if Atkins is making the trades, then that’s what he’s going to be aiming for in return. The Jays really need to get this trade right. Him and Garcia are the only ones who might actually get a decent return. The others will get Thomas Hatch and Forrest Wall 2.0’s.
Laika Community Moderator Posted July 10, 2024 Posted July 10, 2024 I know the Giants are mediocre at best but I do think that Kikuchi pitching into the 8th inning and shoving 13 strikeouts with no walks down the throats of an NL West team on July 10th is a big deal, as far as his trade deadline marketability goes.
hanton Old-Timey Member Posted July 10, 2024 Posted July 10, 2024 Me too. BAL, NYY, CLE, HOU, LAD, MIL at minimum all will be looking to add to their rotation. assuming Atkins won't deal with the ALE, that would leave CLE, HOU, LAD, MIL. Atkins is in a good spot, LAD farm is loaded and they really need a starter what better than Kikuchi - he would be an instant hit in LA. Wrobleski + Cartaya/Vargas for for Kikuchi
