Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted March 26, 2024 Posted March 26, 2024 I would like to take a page out of Jim's book here and go on record as an owner of Ohtani in a dynasty league: I believe everything he said today 100%. End the witch hunt and let this man get back to being the greatest baseball player since Babe Ruth.

Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted March 26, 2024 Posted March 26, 2024 This is uncalled for *******, seriously. I was complementing the man, stop being so sensitive. I've never liked Ohtani so much as I do now. Thought he was just some boring asexual weirdo like the Sheldon Cooper from Big Bang Theory of baseball. Now I realize I had him all wrong. Ohtani should join this forum and post in the betting thread. So we all can do opposite of what he does because he's obviously terrible at it when not throwing games.

Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted March 26, 2024 Posted March 26, 2024 Ah - maybe I've watched too many movies. I remember scenes where the Owner says they've decided not to press charges... Depends on the crime type. Statutory rape means they will prosecute for violation of the statute regardless if the victim declines to press charges or cooperate as one example. Key factor is level and type of crime.

Bassitt makes the 'good' list, but Berrios makes the 'bad' list.
Laika Community Moderator Posted March 26, 2024 Posted March 26, 2024 On March 25th. These f***ing idiots. I mean, mostly Jordan Walker.

Just throw yourself into your teammate's knees while you're both running full speed. Everything will be fine. I'm not sure there's an outfielder in the majors right now who looks more lost defensively than Walker.

Dude is 6'6", 250 Carlson might have a separated shoulder or something but this was a a foot away from being a Walker concussion + a Carlson blown ACL Walker is a -20 OF. It is hilarious. I hope the Cards keep him out there all year.
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted March 26, 2024 Posted March 26, 2024 Oof... that just SHOULD NOT happen, man. Dangerous as f***, I hope Carlson is okay.

They should just have him timeshare 1B and DH when Edman returns.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted March 26, 2024 Posted March 26, 2024 Ohtani is just a coward liar now? I don't understand why people jump to this conclusion. You know almost nothing about this situation, yet already judge the guy. You don't have to squint very hard to see that Ohtani was betting with his interpreter and they got caught. He probably ought to have just said nothing until meeting with his lawyer, but he made a mistake. A lawyer has been hired to get him out of this and is telling him what to say now. Anyone who thinks they'd take the high road in this situation and spill all the beans and just come out and tell the truth to everyone is lying to themselves. You'd be doing what Ohtani is doing - exactly your lawyer tells you to.

Instead they keep both and have Walker be the worst defensive OF in the league. Maybe they’ll put him at 1B when Goldy leaves.

I don't understand why they don't just DH Walker (perhaps rotating with Goldy and Arenado a bit) and put Contreras behind the dish again....problem solved and Walker takes over at 1st base next year when Goldy leaves. Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted March 26, 2024 Posted March 26, 2024 It's true though, the man was simply duped by a close family friend, a POS human being. His spokesperson literally came out right at the beginning and said that this wasn't the case. Then the story changed once the lawyers got involved. He was aware of the betting and aware this his money was being used for it. That much is abundantly clear. We can't really infer a whole lot more.

I just believe that they are a stupid org now. They are 10 years behind the times on pitching development. It's a nightmare. They have obviously been a solid organization in several ways for the last decade+. They do (or have done) some very good things in terms of developing hitters, old school scouting, and transactions at the MLB level. But the cracks are showing... Couple years ago they traded Adolis Garcia for cash, then Randy Aronzarena for Matthew Liberatore!!! Some might see the Arenado and Goldschmidt performances at their ages to be dumb luck and nothing more.

Laika Community Moderator Posted March 26, 2024 Posted March 26, 2024 I don't think this Domingo German signing is going to work for Pitt. “I drink when I want to drink, but I don’t have any problem,” German told NJ.com. “I can go a month or two months without drinking.” As for why German went to rehab last season, he explained that he agreed to go because otherwise the Yankees would have withheld the roughly $870,000 remaining of his $2.6 million contract. “I went because the Yankees weren’t going to pay me,” German said. “I was told that I would be there for a month. My wife and family nudged me to go. They reminded me that I needed the money. My family told me, ‘You’re going to come out of here feeling better and you’re going to save your salary.’”

Some might see the Arenado and Goldschmidt performances at their ages to be dumb luck and nothing more. "The Cardinal Way" included all the platitudes like high character players who hustled. But it also included embracing analytics and developing young talent. It seems like they've let the latter stagnate while still embracing the former and it's led to a stale front office. They are still building the team like it's 2008-2012. Some of those things still work with their trades and FA signings and even a little player development here and there. But they badly need an update.
Nexii Verified Member Posted March 26, 2024 Posted March 26, 2024 I think Ohtani knew more than he lets on, given how close he was with Ippei. Gambling to the degeneracy extent seems like a hard thing to hide 100%. But given how Ohtani let his mother control his finances, it's not a stretch that he also let Ippei do the same. Pretty much running all the day-to-day life things for him like how his mother did when he was in Japan. It's kind of unimaginable to ordinary people though, that anyone would be naive enough to do this. In a way you could connect the dots and say his family sheltering him led him to this outcome. Seems more like a Tim Duncan situation to me, but the IRS/Feds could uncover a lot still. Extradition from Japan to the US for wire fraud adds another dimension. There is a treaty but it won't be as easy as persecuting an American citizen.
