Sucks big time... J.D. was my first option at DH. Let's hope Turner can continue his spring training output into the season.

Would have preferred JDM at 1/12 over Turner at 1/13, but waiting until March 21 to sign a DH probably wasn't realistic for Atkins.

And the Mets deferred the majority of the deal. Wow. Deferrals are getting out of hand lol

Go look up what Michael Jordan was earning up until his 1st retirement when all those gambling rumours came about. Hint, it was like 3M/season. Like I'm not crying poor for him but it's nowhere near what he should have earned and what he came to earn afterwards.

Ohtani just signed generational wealth money. Again, it would be really odd if he was illegally gambling.

For many people with gambling problems, it's not always about trying to set yourself up with wealth. It's the competitiveness of it and trying to win that keeps bringing them back. They are hooked on the dopamine rush that comes from winning. Guys like Jordan, who are uber competitive, would feed off that feeling of winning.

I thought you were kidding last night, crazy, Jays need to get in on this loophole to stay under the CBT thresholds...

Martinez gets a $2.5 million signing bonus, $2 million this year and $7.5 million in deferred money, payable in $1.5 million installments each Jan. 15 from 2034-38.

Turner can play in the field, JDM has not for a few years now? Prefer Turner

I wonder how often we see him at 3B. Especially if Votto bounces back.

Wow this loophole just keeps getting more f***ed

How are the deferrals starting 10 years after the contract ends?

I'm now firmly in the camp of people who don't care about deferrals. Player and team agree to a contract that will pay him 12.5M between now and 2038. The NPV of the deal is calculated in the same way for all 30 teams, and will be applied to the luxury tax number for this year. Every team in the league was free to offer him more money up front, and presumably none wanted to.

Why do you think it's a "loophole", mikey?

do you not believe in contractual freedom?

do you not believe in the basic accounting logic behind the net present value of money?

what is being dodged? why is it unfair?

These deals do shave from CBT penalties, etc... I'm reading that as more than 4.2M saved correct?

The Mets are subject to the highest luxury tax fees possible under the CBA. They’re past the $297MM mark that’s the highest penalization threshold; they’ve paid the CBT in three consecutive years. As a result, they’re charged a 110% fee on future expenditures. The deferred money reduces the net present value of Martinez’s contract, so it’s not yet clear precisely how much the Mets will owe in CBT commitments.

A one-year, $12MM deal without any deferred money would’ve come with $13.2MM in luxury taxes. RosterResource’s Jon Becker estimates that the NPV of Martinez’s deal will land just under $9MM. That’d come with a little less than $10MM in luxury obligations.

I think you mean $3.2M saved. It's possible the offers were 1/9M paid now or 1/12M with the deferrals. So in the end it works out to the same hit for this year. Players(or atleast agents) aren't stupid, they understand a dollar now is worth more than a dollar 10 years from now, that will reflect in the total value.

Yep, as we learned from the Ohtani deal the total number is all fugazi by the time it’s watered down with the deferrals. I don’t even know why players are doing it. Ohtani wanted the 700M number for some reason but he really got 460M. It’s the same s*** with JDM just on a much smaller scale.

It’s weird at first but when you wrap your head around it, it just doesn’t matter.

Sort of but he could just take 9M in 2024 dollars and he’d be getting basically the same amount of money as taking 12 mil with deferred money.

Due to inflation a dollar today is worth more than a dollar in the future. So in the end he signed a contract for 1 year worth 9M in 2024 dollars. And the Mets are getting hit with a tax burden based on that 9M.

This sounds kind of crazy...

Nolan Gorman’s back hasn’t been an issue this spring.

Gorman has been plagued by persistent back issues over the last few years, but offseason changes to his diet have apparently eliminated the inflammation that previously led to back stiffness. The 23-year-old rising slugger claims he gave up unhealthy coconut oil popcorn this offseason, which has enabled his back to be pain-free for the first time in three years. It’s fair to wonder whether finally putting his omnipresent back issues to bed will help him take a significant step forward at the plate this season.

And why does Steve Cohen of all owners feel the need to do this?

The Guardians have informed right-handers Carlos Carrasco and Tyler Beede that they’ve made the team’s Opening Day roster, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports. Both were in camp on minor league deals

Theoretically it doesn't change much with it. The amount in deferred money should already be scaled to an inflation number like Ohtani's contract is (the reason it's 700M instead of the 460M). It has more to do with the team's budget and actual accounting than the CBT I think.

Yeah maybe 5% reduction through deferrals is the most a team could achieve

Holliday didn't make the Orioles, heading to AAA

Langford made the Rangers

Feels like a dumb move by the O's. Bring him up from day 1 and he has every chance to be ROY or 2nd in voting and net them yet another gift draft pick, not to mention that he's really f***ing good and would make their team better.
