Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted March 19, 2024 Posted March 19, 2024 17M signing bonus according to Slusser, 15M on the season, is this an overt way of getting around the CBT? Snell was the 2nd best pitcher in baseball last year, behind only Cole, figured he'd get more guaranteed money than that. Yeesh...
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted March 19, 2024 Posted March 19, 2024 Actually Beavis, common sense speculated that this FA top of the class all Had major warts that could prevent the traditional long term deals with high AAV. Some were inconsistent offense, some durability, some age etc. And as they didn’t reach mega deals , there would be trickledown to lower FA. We had at least 51m to spend and in conjunction with many teams having cable contract issues, we should have held funds tighter and waited it out. Atkins chose 2016 style instead. f*** Off.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted March 19, 2024 Posted March 19, 2024 For reasons like you said, I never considered Snell one of the elite arms in baseball. Rodon 6/162 with more question marks though. And SP always a premium. I really believe Boras overplayed it. Who knows

wamco Verified Member Posted March 19, 2024 Posted March 19, 2024 Snell is coming off a Cy Young season. I'm not sure he's going to get more on the FA market next year (even if he performs well again this year). If teams won't pay him what he wants this season, why would they next offseason, when he's a year older with more milage on his arm? This isn't a Belly situation where people just doubt that he's "back". You think his next contract is gonna be less than 62m?

That's an excellent question. it's being paid out at a later date so makes you wonder why it wouldn't just be deferred money.

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted March 19, 2024 Posted March 19, 2024 Haven't see it posted, but Cole has a pinched nerve. It's not clear what they will do about it, but obv this is far from the worst case scenario.

John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted March 19, 2024 Author Posted March 19, 2024 Rodon 6/162 with more question marks though. And SP always a premium. I really believe Boras overplayed it. Who knows Rodon’s deal and subsequent reality is probably the reason no team was going to gamble on Snell with a similar deal. Giving Cole his deal was risky enough on a track record of dominance and health. Pitchers and their agents I think really need to adjust their demands and focus on shorter terms with higher AAV

Someone may wish to correct me on this, but I think it's simply for accounting purposes. The cap hit should be 31M next year in both scenarios, however by using a signing bonus instead of deferred money the payroll salary will be 23.5M this year and 8.5M next year (assuming he opts out). It probably matters either for his budget or for something related to investors.

They should also be taking a harder look at extension offers that have length. At the time of the Berrios signing, I thought it was a nice value play for the Jays, but a seven year contract on a pitcher is scary and not many are going to land those in today's market.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted March 19, 2024 Posted March 19, 2024 RotoWire News: Giants manager Bob Melvin hinted Saturday that Ahmed is now ahead of Marco Luciano in the competition for the starting job at shortstop, John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. "There's some time left," Melvin said of the competition. "It's not like Marco's got a lot of consistent at-bats. Obviously, the hamstring thing set him back quite a bit. We want to make sure we get him a little deeper in games and play him a little bit more but also understand he's coming back from an injury that you don't want to happen again." (3/10/2024) Giants currently have Nick Ahmed penciled in as their starting SS. Surely they'd give up a ham sandwich for Espinal.

Are the Giants contenders now? I still think they're s***, but others think they're going to be great now that they added Chapman and Snell.

At this point I'd probably settle for an "I can't believe it isn't butter" sandwich. Seriously though, Espinal is probably better than we're giving him credit for. It's more about our other options than it is about him.

That's better than every infielder we have except Bo and Babe Schneider.
