Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted March 9, 2024 Posted March 9, 2024 LA mia moving Mookie Betts to SS and Lux to 2nd base. That's insane. Such a valuable player, man

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted March 9, 2024 Posted March 9, 2024 Such a valuable player, man If Betts can play even average defensively at SS, he moves to a whole new level for me. A legend of the game. Still so baffling that the Red Sox would ever let him go.
Laika Community Moderator Posted March 9, 2024 Posted March 9, 2024 mlbtr notes Amed Rosario was offered $4M from NYY but took less to get playing time in TB Jays offered Chapman some form of 2 year deal at the end but his first choice was to go to SFG anyway (Heyman)

Chapman probably thinks he doesn’t have to cuss at Melvin since he will pitch around Ohtani.

If he doesn’t hit RHP better than he has in his career the Rays won’t hesitate to platoon him
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted March 9, 2024 Posted March 9, 2024 Weird decision by Rosario. If he doesn’t hit RHP better than he has in his career the Rays won’t hesitate to platoon him Yeah the Rays will squeeze every drop of talent out of you but they will also treat you like a Strat-o-matic card and pull your playing time for the slightest of advantage.Still, it seems like the path to playing time in TB is far better than in NYY.

Laika Community Moderator Posted March 9, 2024 Posted March 9, 2024 Weird decision by Rosario. If he doesn’t hit RHP better than he has in his career the Rays won’t hesitate to platoon him I get the decision but I'm not even sure he's more than a 50% player in Tampa. Paredes 3B, Lowe strong side platoon 2B, Cabalerro defensive specialist at SS which Rosario might not even be able to play anymore... where is he playing? I guess 1/3 of the time at 2B and then picks up sporadic starts against RHP at 3B or LF if they want to give Siri or Arozarena or Paredes a break? Caminero and Mead and sleeper Richie Palacios are also lurking so he won't have any rope at all. NYY on the other hand, he would have less playing time out of the gates but much less season long competition and if one player like DJLM sucks or dies he's a starter.

There's been a lot of talk that they'll trade Harold Ramirez, who is one of their bigger salaries and ate up the majority of appearances from the DH slot last year. Hasn't happened yet obviously but moving him would surely free up ABs for Rosario

John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted March 9, 2024 Author Posted March 9, 2024 Interesting.... releasing a guy instead of keeping a clearly useful player around until you find a decent trade is kinda nuts. This would follow the NL first, reverse order of 2023 standings, then AL reverse order claiming procedures would it not? Would the Jays even have a shot at being successful at claiming him?
deanmike Verified Member Posted March 9, 2024 Posted March 9, 2024 Yeah Jays should, and will probably be in on this
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted March 9, 2024 Posted March 9, 2024 Davis makes sense in some ways but his contract is 7 mil and we have a logjam in the infield as it is. Even if we option Espinal, bringing Davis in could mean we lose Clement, have to option Schneider or god forbid, cut ties with Canadian hero Joey Votto. Also, it's not a good sign that the Giants are just placing him on waivers either. The metrics are mixed on his defense but this tells me that it must suck because the bat is fine for 3B. Surely they tried trading him and didn't find much of a market for him. Though they could still work out a trade I suppose.
hanton Old-Timey Member Posted March 9, 2024 Posted March 9, 2024 Treinen on the mound for the Dodgers just took a line drive straight off his/body, just getting up now....and he's coming out

Given how cheap teams have been this winter, and how badly free agents have been screwed by it, I'm not sure Davis at $7m is going to be claimed, but who knows. He would certainly help the Jays who need offense and he comes with positional versatility which they seem to love as well.
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted March 9, 2024 Posted March 9, 2024 Espinal for Davis if there are no takers on waivers?

Yeah, just that there's a ton of teams between the Jays and a successful claim. they'd be 22nd in line or something.
hanton Old-Timey Member Posted March 9, 2024 Posted March 9, 2024 WTF this is rarely called - Mookie trying to get the runner advancing to 2nd Derek Hill singles on a line drive to right fielder Chris Taylor. Derek Hill to 2nd. Derek Hill advances to 2nd, on an interference error by shortstop Mookie Betts.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted March 9, 2024 Posted March 9, 2024 Steamer600 Projections: Schneider- 2.7 WAR Espinal- 1.9 IKF- 1.5 Clement- 1.5 J.D. Davis- 1.3 Biggio- 1.3 Not sure if J.D. Davis is worth 7 mil in addition to punting one of these guys off the 25 man. My guess is the Jays won't put a claim in.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted March 9, 2024 Author Posted March 9, 2024 Espinal for Davis if there are no takers on waivers? if there's no takers on waivers he's a free agent.
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted March 9, 2024 Posted March 9, 2024 if there's no takers on waivers he's a free agent. He'll be claimed for sure, I wonder if he even makes it to the Jays.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted March 9, 2024 Posted March 9, 2024 Cleveland would be a good fit for JD Davis. They are desperate for power and have a ton of lefties in the lineup that Davis can spell at various positions.

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted March 9, 2024 Posted March 9, 2024 Jays need his bat, bruh. Cleveland is higher in waiver priority than us. And I doubt the Jays are even interested, if they were they would have offered the Giants something that would have been better than merely putting him on waivers. Even if we are, I could see non-contenders like the Rockies to contenders with higher priority than us (like the Guardians, Mariners or even Yankees) all being interested. Little chance he ends up a Jay IMO.
