John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted July 20, 2024 Posted July 20, 2024 We will never know, but I'm kinda curious whether the Jays would have traded him this trade deadline even if he were healthy and putting up a normal Bo season. If anything it feels like the injury and bad performance gives Shatkins a good excuse to hold on to him in order to try to compete in 2025. Would still depend on the record. But if Bo was healthy and having a typical Bo season, the record is probably at least a few games closer to.500
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted July 20, 2024 Posted July 20, 2024 Yeah both Vladdy and Springer lately have looked way better. Vladdy has been really encouraging and looks like he could have a monster year in 2025. As well, if Spencer Horwitz can stick at 2B, that would be sweet. Varsho in CF just needs to be a 3 WAR outfielder who hits near the bottom of the lineup. Will take 25-30 HR's from him with his glove. Kirk/Jansen behind the plate is fine still. Ideally would love IKF in a super utility role, but if he's your starting 3B in 2025, just want to make sure you get two really good bats at DH and who could play a corner OF spot. I have a feeling a blank check is being prepared for Soto. Which is also probably why we won't see any real movement of guys under control for next season. Jays will need to show Soto they have the horses to run with the Os.

The blank check with 100% be out of the NYY checkbook in the end. How much is written on it will likely depend on the Bluejays though. All the agents probably love the Jays. Hopefully one day that can mean something, when lesser guys are in play.

Wouldn’t be surprised to see the Mets and Dodgers go hard after Soto too
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted July 20, 2024 Posted July 20, 2024 Don’t forget, Aaron Judge was extremely close to leaving the Yankees. I don’t think its a certainty at all that Soto stays.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted July 20, 2024 Posted July 20, 2024 Soto is going to get the highest AAV ever (when you factor deferrals in Ohtani’s deal). It’s going to be Cohen, the Yankees, or Dodgers. If the Jays want to make a splash in free agency then it will probably be Bregman.

They are expected to trade pitcher Yusei Kikuchi, center fielder Kevin Kiermaier, catcher Danny Jansen and DH Justin Turner – and could entertain offers for Chris Bassitt and Kevin Gausman. But are they willing to go all of the way and trade Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette too? Highly unlikely. They still want to keep the team together one more year, but if they’re still underperforming a year from now, they’ll be dumped at next year’s trade deadline. Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette has told friends that he would welcome a trade, while first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. badly wants to stay in Toronto and is open to signing a long-term extension. Nightengale says Bo wants out and Vlad wants to stay

They really have to resign Vlad, from a business perspective, but he’s clearly not signing anything team friendly.

Entirely possible we wait things out, let Vlad test the waters in free agency, then just match whatever the highest offer is. Or exceed it slightly. Like Judge and the Yankees

Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted July 21, 2024 Posted July 21, 2024 There is no point in locking Vlad up right now if he is over valuing himself. The guy is basically a 1-3 fWAR first baseman for almost three seasons now. Wait another 1.3 seasons and he'll get to see what he's worth on the open market, and it won't be some astronomical number unless he has another MVP season next year (spoiler alert -- he won't)

You're overly negative. Shatkins likely is too and we're going to lose him if we wait until he's a free agent.

He'd need to carry like a 1.000 OPS the rest of the season to get to .900 They said yesterday the average OPS is like .703 (as Springer now has an above average OPS after yesterday's game). It's crazy how much offensive production has dropped across MLB. Vlad's .835 OPS puts him almost 40% better than the average hitter this year. I sure miss the offense we had during the steroid era.

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2024 Posted July 22, 2024 How many HRs for Judge in the steriods / juiced ball era?
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2024 Posted July 22, 2024 How many HRs for Judge in the steriods / juiced ball era? Interesting question. I think he'd have challenged Bond's record of 73. I also find it interesting that despite running a 199 wRC+ over the past 3 seasons, Judge doesn't even remotely get treated like Bonds did. Judge has be intentionally walked 34 times over the past 3 seasons. Bonds was intentionally walked 120 times in 2004 alone! Bonds had a 3 year stretch where he was intentionally walked 249 times, which was 14% of his total PA's. Bonds had a .609 OBP with a 37.6 BB% and a 6.6 K% in 2004. Unreal stuff.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2024 Posted July 22, 2024 While I've always been a major supporter of Vlad, I don't trust fat athletes to maintain their weight once they've cashed in their long term deal. If he signs any 10 year deal, there need to be weight restrictions built into the contract like Zion's in the nba. Only then, would I begin negotiations on a long term deal. The Jays need to get on this asap or risk losing him for nothing but a compensatory pick.
