G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted June 8, 2024 Posted June 8, 2024 ...and we need bats right now Do we ever Have you SEEN today's lineup??
Omar Old-Timey Member Posted June 8, 2024 Posted June 8, 2024 Do we ever Have you SEEN today's lineup?? We are now building this team around offense (as of June 7,2024)........just a slight course adjustment for the Shapiro regime. Maybe no one will notice.
James Key Verified Member Posted June 8, 2024 Posted June 8, 2024 I kinda agree. Like doesn’t Horowitz provide a younger more well rounded, I sense the irony talking about vogelbach, version of DV? Maybe not the raw power but still good swinger from the left side? IMO Cavan is replaced by the versatility of Schneider and IkF.
AMS528 Verified Member Posted June 8, 2024 Posted June 8, 2024 vogel is the better bat I guess. But except for one of the past five seasons Vogelbach has been worth a grand total of 0 WAR. Four of his last five seasons cancel out to nothing and the other one he was ok. The last two seasons combined they've even had the same value as batters. Vogelbachs expected numbers are a lot better though, although I wouldn't be surprised if he's a consistent underperformer there.
The_DH Verified Member Posted June 8, 2024 Posted June 8, 2024 Do we ever Have you SEEN today's lineup?? So we made the roster moves today to have Horwitz on the bench against a lefty pitcher.
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted June 8, 2024 Posted June 8, 2024 I guess the Horwitz at bats will be a trial, see how he does. If good, and the team continues to suck, then trade off the designated hitters and bring up Barger. Hopefully he gets more of a shot than Barger did.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted June 8, 2024 Posted June 8, 2024 It's not a very important move, and it's very marginal but I'm wondering why everyone is pleased it's Biggio and not Vogelbach when Biggio has at least consistently had positive value as a utility player and Vogelbach is pretty bad and provides nothing when he doesn't hit? I don't get it.
Masterbather Verified Member Posted June 8, 2024 Posted June 8, 2024 Yep, can't say this one was a shocker.
Laika Community Moderator Posted June 8, 2024 Posted June 8, 2024 Only silver lining with Manoah is that creeping ligament damage may explain the loss of stuff before 2023 Maybe tiny chance that when he returns he's 2022 Manoah again.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted June 8, 2024 Posted June 8, 2024 Sucks for Manoah as that likely takes him out of 2025 as well (or at least most of it). The 2025 rotation looks like Gausman, Berrios, Bassitt, and then a whole bunch of uncertainty.

Could also always add another starter during the offseason via free agency or trade. Shouldn't be too difficult. Gausman, Berrios and Bassitt will all be another year older however.
Laika Community Moderator Posted June 8, 2024 Posted June 8, 2024 Y Rod, Tiedemann, Francis, Macko are at least decent SP5 options Will definitely need another reliable option or two if they want to compete

I would expect that Kikuchi would likely be interested in remaining with the team but I don't know if there will be available payroll to make this happen. It's not outside the realm of possibility Manoah could make a late season return much as Ryu was able to make about a year after his own Tommy John surgery.
The_DH Verified Member Posted June 8, 2024 Posted June 8, 2024 Well, we have 2 free 40 man roster spots now (Biggio's and Manoah will go 60 day) so we could make a move here. Mitch White for a minor league deal?

As well, Boras is his agent so could be tough, but you never know. Sucks about Manoah since he had a couple good starts and looked like he figured things out. Should be able to find another mid-rotation starter and roll with one of the guys Laika mentioned in the No. 5 spot. Just gotta hope Gausman and Berrios don't have a significant drop-off. Same with Bassitt.

Same probably for Ricky T. Macko interests me a bit. But our pitching is thin. Very thin.

Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted June 8, 2024 Posted June 8, 2024 Cody Poteet went to the scrap heap from the Marlins after his IL stint. He has showed promise with the Marlins. KC picked him up that I thought was smart. Then the Yankees ended up picking him up. He has made spot starts all year with very good success. He pitched almost 5 inning of shutout baseball tonight against the Dodgers. Poteet is someone the Jays could have and should have jumped on in the off season as one example.

This kind of stuff is unconvincing though. Bad argument. You can cherry pick good scrap heap signings other teams made every single year...
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted June 8, 2024 Posted June 8, 2024 This kind of stuff is unconvincing though. Bad argument. You can cherry pick good scrap heap signings other teams made every single year... For me it has do to with organizational ability to identify and develop pithing. He was the perfect type of candidate the Blue jays should have taken a flyer on considering their lack of actual credible depth. The Yankees are able to identify and develop, Thorpe, Ortiz, Vasquez, King to get them Soto, they traded away Sears, Montgomery, have Gil and Schmidt (IL) in the rotation. Call up Poteet for three emergency starts. Pitches 6 inning against the Guardians for a win, beats the Giant for the win, and pitches shutout baseball against the Dodgers. Maybe it is the selection process and development.
Laika Community Moderator Posted June 8, 2024 Posted June 8, 2024 Yeah the Jays suck at development everyone agrees But the one thing they are good at is selecting players from the FA pile. Even Y Rod this year, injury notwithstanding, looks like a good one.

The Jays have had quite a bit of success with struggling MLB starters (Ray, Matz, Stripling etc.) but haven't had much success with scrap heap types.

The_DH Verified Member Posted June 8, 2024 Posted June 8, 2024 we're going to have a pitching problem in a little while. With Romano hurt and only 4 starters, it's going to be like the beginning of the season was but now the defense has been down-graded a touch. The pitching is going to be seriously stretched.
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted June 8, 2024 Posted June 8, 2024 Hopefully some of these bullpen guys can get healthy and perform so at the very least they can be dealt to clear salary and bring in some lottery ticket prospects. If the bullpen is going to lay fat turds all season long we might as well thrust some of the younger cheaper guys into more prominant roles to see if they can excel and also bring up some of the younger cheaper arms from AAA and AA. Let's see Pearson closing, let's see some of Cooke, Danner, Fluharty, Juenger, Pardinho, Burnette.
