Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted May 20, 2024 Posted May 20, 2024 Perennial WC3 contenders!! Exciting!! I don't think we are going 10-3 nor do I think we need too. If we did we would be right back in it is all I was saying. And if we were perennial WC3 contenders and had a bunch of gamers it would be very exciting. Instead we've got a bunch of mental midgets.

Masterbather Verified Member Posted May 21, 2024 Posted May 21, 2024 Perennial WC3 contenders!! Exciting!! Bingo! Can we not continue spinning our wheels as, at best, a pretty good team? 40% of teams make the playoffs in baseball. It doesn't mean you are special or great. It's one thing if we were a super talented team that just had a cold start or had significant injuries which caused us to have to sneak in as WC3, like we tried to do in 2021, but we are just a mediocre team that would need to get lucky just to get WC3 but have no real shot of winning anything. Thinking otherwise would only delay the inevitable and cost us value with whatever assets we do have to use to build what is hopefully a real future contender.

So basically everyone except for the cream of the crop 95+ win teams should even bother trying. Thinking like that was largely ruining the competitive integrity of the sport as essentially half of the sport was actively trying to lose. I think the extra wildcard spots have been a godsend in that more teams are actually trying to compete, and nearly every year seems to have a surprise team largely spinning their wheels for much of the season, getting hot at the right time, and making serious noise in the playoffs. But of course with your mentality those teams should have packed in their respective seasons in May and not bothered trying to compete.
Laika Community Moderator Posted May 21, 2024 Posted May 21, 2024 Let's just put a pin in the WC3 talk for a couple more weeks okay? For all we know they'll stink the rest of May and the direction will be obvious

Laika Community Moderator Posted May 21, 2024 Posted May 21, 2024 Sure Either way, let's please not complain about being awkwardly competitive after beating the White Sox

I don't mind the extra wild card spots, I think everybody's goal should be to try to win a world series, and for teams that think they have the horses to do so by all means get in any way you can, but we don't have the horses. So our path to the world series starts with a rebuild. Like I said, the 2021 team made a push and that team had the horses, I would have been very happy for that team to sneak in.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted May 21, 2024 Posted May 21, 2024 6 vs CWS, 4 vs DET, 3 vs PIT. The Jays have to pull off something like 10-3 in this stretch, or 9-4 at worst (which would put them at .500 before their series with BAL). The Tigers are decent now and the Pirates games could involve Skenes/Jones, so I wouldn’t count on it, but they need some type of run to make up ground. Luckily the Wild Card field looks weaker than normal with the Astros having a down year and the Rays looking human due to injuries but still going to be a massive uphill battle. I believe the Jays will miss both Jones and Skenes as the schedule stands. Good post.

Masterbather Verified Member Posted May 21, 2024 Posted May 21, 2024 Yeah and it arguably sets a weird precedent for the team if they cater to every fan that gets bonked Indeed the team owes the fans nothing if they get bonked, but I don't agree that it sets a bad precedent. It rarely ever happens that somebody gets hit really bad especially these days with all the netting, I think it's a good faith gesture to your fan base to at least give them an autographed ball or have them meet their favorite Blue Jay or something. It's not really a big ask.

If someone gets hurt after all the netting in place, it's literally nothing for a team to send down a peasant worker to ensure they are okay and give them something to brighten their day and that's only assuming the player doesn't have a minute available to spend with them.

I think they always send someone down to check on them and get medical attention if necessary. A little token gesture seems fine too. Not sure I'd bother a player though.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted May 21, 2024 Posted May 21, 2024 Why would you give her something? Pay attention to the game and get off your phone. I think most of us initially think that, but I'm not so sure you can be certain that's what happened. This isn't Fever Pitch - if a ball comes your way, everyone is making noise and it would alert you to look up. I've played baseball my whole life and I often question just how good I'd be at catching a home run ball or a screaming line drive (this is gone now with the nets) with my bare hands. Then you factor in deflections and other arms in the way and it's easy to see how people who are looking right at the ball still wear it in the face.

Hopefully they both get hot enough to get some real nice pieces back. One or both may end up being MVP candidates somewhere else, but I ain't willing to take the risk with either one of these two.

hanton Old-Timey Member Posted May 21, 2024 Posted May 21, 2024 Imagine Kikuchi in LA (team has been decimated with pitching injuries) he would be an instant hit. Over to you Atkins....
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted May 21, 2024 Posted May 21, 2024 Mike mentioned this earlier but their s*** play actually makes extensions seem more viable. If Vlad was raking like 2021 he'd be trying for a Devers-like extension (10 years, 300 mil). Now it seems like he'd be lucky to get a Matt Olson extension (8 for 160) but I could see doing that. Bo never seemed like he was that into an extension but Fangraphs recently suggested 7 years, 151 mil. I don't think Bo would do that but I'd consider it from the team's perspective. His defense at SS has been better in recent years and he should be able to stay there through the majority of the contract. If Bo were raking he'd probably want Bogaerts money.

That Bogaerts deal is vile.
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted May 21, 2024 Posted May 21, 2024 We should be at the peak of this cores window and the biggest reason we aren't is because Vlad and Bo aren't superstars you can build around. They are barely even stars at this point. I couldn't imagine committing to either of them long term and continuing to try and build around them. Even shittier is that they've been so bad you really won't get much for them in a trade either. Its pretty much worst case scenario for this ers of the Jays. Both showing signs of life lately though, hopefully we're about to witness a baseball last minute miracle.
Laika Community Moderator Posted May 21, 2024 Posted May 21, 2024 Buy when others are scared The reason some FA deals look horrible is because teams end up buying the pico top of the player stock I do agree it would be a good time to extend either of these bums, if they would. They have physical tools (Vlad) or track records (Bo). It makes me sick to my stomach to say that.

Bo is a great fit for them too and they have a lot of upper minors guys who could work for a re-tool rather than a rebuild. Guys like Vargas, Pages, Stone, etc.

Hurt, May, River Ryan, Sheehan... They have tons of other interesting prospects down the farm system They have this Nicky Frazzo kid
