I think 3B is IKF's on the strength of his defense unless and until a kid steals playing time from him. Those possible kids are Barger, Palmegiani, and Orelvis Martinez.

Biggio is the wrinkle on the roster who could also take some time there and he will probably get first crack.

But, Biggio has major flaws and was a fringe 3B defensively. And prospects are prospects. I am mentally prepared for 500 IKF PA and 1.6 WAR.

This is so not true about last year.

Everyone thought pitching depth and RP quality was the weakness before the season. The offense being limp only emerged as an issue as the season rolled along and Vlad/Kirk/Springer never got hot. You can argue that they should have traded for a big hitter but... easier said than done, and most still expected the incumbents to hit better in the second half, reasonably.

Just frustrating that they did literally nothing to supplement the offense at the deadline. It was clearly an issue. The Hicks trade was great but they just didn’t go that extra mile to get a bat which could’ve (would’ve) made a world of difference.

Best bat moved at the deadline was Pham who probably ends up blocking Schneider, thus causing us to miss the playoffs altogether.

Yeah it was the most frustrating Blue Jays team I have ever seen, for various reasons.

Not sure any of the bats that moved at the deadline would have made a difference though. I guess someone like Tommy Pham might have gotten a couple of playoff PAs over Merrifield? Something like that. I dunno.

If a Chapman signing doesn't happen, then I'd be shocked if IKF isn't the starting 3B. Last season Davis Schneider hit like prime Barry Bonds for a month and not only were they still reluctant to play him, but they also couldn't wait to bench him once he started to regress. Expecting them to trust Barger out of ST to handle 3B is probably a pipe dream, but I'd love to be wrong about that. Orelvis seems like a butcher at 3B based on some reports, but Barger might have a shot at being passable there. A LHB with power is exactly what the Jays need, so if they could find that internally in a position of real need, then it would be a best case scenario.

Ah yes. I remember being mad about this. Playoff PAs:

Biggio, 8

Merrifield, 2

Espinal, 2

Varsho, 5

KK, 6

Davis Schneider.... ZERO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think his 0 for 4586 stretch to end the season may have had an impact on his playing time.

He ended the season with a 2 for 4 game, and a BB. Both hits were doubles.

A little blurb in FG about the Jays 3B situation:

Blue Jays

• If the team doesn’t add a real third baseman (Falafel doesn’t count), Orelvis Martinez, Addison Barger, and Damiano Palmegiani will get consideration at third base.

Martinez has always been a prospect who could slug the ball, but last year he made the necessary adjustments to refine his approach. His strikeout rate fell from 28.6 percent in 2022 to 23.4 percent in 2023. Martinez can be a 30-plus-home-run hitter for the Blue Jays but patience could be required since there is a lot of swing-and-miss potential in his game, too. As for a position, he might project long-term as a second baseman, but third base remains a bit of a puzzle for the Blue Jays, and it could be worth seeing if Martinez is a fit there.

Barger has one of the best throwing arms in the organization, so like Martinez, he should get a look at third base, in spring and potentially later on in the season, especially if Isiah Kiner-Falefa looks like he fits better as a utility bench player.

[Palmegiani’s] power bat has garnered him more attention as he’s risen through the system. On defence, the 24-year-old has primarily split his time playing first and third base. While there are question marks about his defence, he looked comfortable playing third base in 17 of his 22 games in the AFL. Palmegiani should get a look at third this spring and if he continues slugging like he has over the last year, he could earn himself an opportunity to test his bat in the majors.

he was due...terrible game planning

Went hard probably equals offering around the same as other teams were offering. Not going to get people like that. I’m not saying it’s good to overpay for guys, but you were realistically not going to sign him, so no need to flex

No need to overpay for a 2 WAR DH man. That would be stupid/poor planning.

Not disagreeing but if you offered him 1/10 you weren’t going to get him, so no need to classify as going hard

Well neither of us know what the offer was - so why speculate about "went hard" means - and then assume it means the Jays offered the same as other teams?

Jesus, who f'ing cares, its Joc

Jays have signed Gausman, Bassitt, etc to reasonable deals that last while. The Jays need to overpay schtick is overblown.

Ya who the f*** cares for Joc. They probably did what they do for most free agents by slightly underbidding and letting the player accept or have another team come over the top.

Now if we come up empty on JDM and Soler then I'll start crying lol.

You don’t think 90% of what’s posted here is just someone speculating?

Who is flexing?

Buster Olney just decided to use the words "went hard" in his article

Probably a side effect of his Cialis

Yeah and to add Arizona was clearly one of the teams in on the ~10 mil DH's as well.

So we might not have gotten Joc, but he does take Arizona out of the market. The musical chairs will continue and we'll get one eventually.

So many guys here lately default to “well we don’t know what the exact the dollar amount is” and it’s so f***ing annoying

That would be nice

I would not be happy with Turner over JDM/Soler. The old bastard is still hitting better than I thought he would at his age but I'm expecting him to fall off a cliff very shortly.

The only way this would make sense is if they nab Bellinger too and had to go cheaper in the DH route. Belli and Turner also played together for a while with the Dodgers. Probably just copium on my end here lol.

Id rather have Turner than Soler. Less term, more consistent bat, can give you a few innings in the field in an emergency.

Yeah

Not the sexy 38 HR upside but better floor. Maybe.
