BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted October 3, 2023 Posted October 3, 2023 Because he's a walking bad luck omen? It certainly does seem like misfortune follows the poor guy wherever he goes. Maybe next season he can break the curse if he comes back to the Blue Jays in free agency. Just think it an imaginary world and we don't blow game 2 last year and go on to win the series vs SEA. His 2 home runs go down in Jays lore like Edwins walk off in 2016 vs the O's and Usbaldo. Lifes not fair. lol

hanton Old-Timey Member Posted October 4, 2023 Posted October 4, 2023 Both KK and Belly ended up to be fantastic signings. KK came with lower risk since he only cost $9M vs. Bellinger at $17.5M. Just needed KK to stay healthy for the most part and play solid defense in CF, which he did. You needed Belly to make huge adjustments offensively in order to get solid value or else you were paying close to $18M for just a solid defensive player. Jays would have benefited more having Bellinger's bat in the lineup given the rest of this lineups struggles. But oh well, can't complain about what KK has provided for this club! It would have been a risk - but only the offensive side - Belli would have easily replaced both KK and Belt, and cost less!

When Teo goes on those heaters he’s one of the best power hitters in baseball. Can’t believe our pen was so dogshit they couldn’t hold a 7 run lead.

Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted October 14, 2023 Posted October 14, 2023 8 years ago today..... Shulman's call was the best.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted October 14, 2023 Posted October 14, 2023 8 years ago today..... Shulman's call was the best. Could watch and listen to that 10,000 times. We didn’t win the World Series in 15 or 16 but those electric moments of this, Edwin’s wildcard walk off and JD’s dash home to beat Texas are eternally etched in the psyche of most Jays fans.
Omar Old-Timey Member Posted October 15, 2023 Posted October 15, 2023 8 years ago today..... Shulman's call was the best. This may be sacrilige to some but I think Kenny Alberts call was better: "The 1-1 from Dyson....Bautista with a drive....deep left field....no doubt about it!" Chills.

If the Jays signed Belly they probably don’t sign Belt though, have to take that into consideration. But yeah Bellinger + some other DH in the lineup probably gets us more wins than KK + Belt. Question is do we believe in Bellinger enough to offer him a longterm contract this offseason?? Because if he’s still a 120ish wRC+ bat then he fits the team very well being a lefty and able to cover 1B.

Does he believe in this team and FO? - Does he want to play LF (if Springer stays RF) on turf? With Vlad and Varsho being in his positions. - Is the risk of an overpay that it will likely take to get him worth it, given some of his hopeless seasons? - Do you make Vlad the DH - put Belly at 1B, Varsho to CF and pick up an impact bat but not overly expensive LF'er?

Because if he’s still a 120ish wRC+ bat then he fits the team very well being a lefty and able to cover 1B. That's a real tough question. Did Bellinger make any adjustments offensively, change anything, lay off certain pitches etc? He was pretty awful with the bat in 2021 and 2022 and yeah would be worried paying him close to $25M per season with the possibility his bat returns to that level haha. His BB% is what's concerning. Was 7.2% in 2023, hardly any better than 6.9% in 2022. If he hits .250 or .260 his numbers won't look that sexy. Definitely the FO would have to do their homework which I'm sure they already have. Bellinger got off to a great start in 2023. There was a stretch in May and June where he was awful and looked like his 2021/2022 version. Then he came back strong in July and just put up video game numbers the rest of the way. Like you said, Bellinger fits the team well being a lefty who can play CF/LF and cover 1B occasionally if he's a 120ish wRC+ bat or more. All he would cost is money. Perhaps other teams have the same concerns and that impacts his market somewhat. Like instead of getting a 7-8 year deal, he only gets a 5-6 year deal given some of the risk he carries.

He's for real, I'll attribute his decline to the shoulder injury (and then later on with the left leg injury) and the amount of time it took for him to heal - especially given it happened during the pandemic

Is this still a thing? Are players concerned about joining organizations that use turf in their home stadium? I thought the new stuff was fine now and I don't think people turn into Andre Dawson or Vlad Sr. anymore (knees destroyed by painted concrete).

Maybe if it was some slummy field. I think we soon see a time where artificial turf fields are even better than real grass.

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted November 14, 2023 Posted November 14, 2023 Cardinals added Robberse and Kloff to the 40-man. I'm sure we could have found space for them but one benefit of that trade is that it did free up some roster spots.

There are some obvious guys we can dump but I'm sure things are going to be tight when the offseason nears its end. Just as an example, if we had kept Robberse (45 FV) and Kloff (40 FV), we might have ended up having to dump a guy like Otto Lopez (45 FV). Maybe in the end that's what we should have done but if all you are doing is shuffling 45 FV prospects around when you trade for a reliever it does shine a new light on the trade and makes it more palatable.

The aspect that surprised me about this trade was that it removed two guys that may have been viable depth starter options as soon as next season. The organization has had a bit of difficulty in developing depth starter options and this particular issue really bit them in the ass in 2022, and if not for amazing rotation health in 2023 it would have been a big concern again.
hanton Old-Timey Member Posted November 15, 2023 Posted November 15, 2023 Not surprising, knack and frasso might get a shot this season, Dodgers are filthy rich in prospects
