Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2023 Posted May 9, 2023 Wonder if the D'backs offer Gurriel a QO. He'll have to continue these types of numbers all season. Unless he keeps up his current 130 wRC+ en route to a 3+ WAR season almost no chance he gets a QO. His RoS projections have him ending the year as a fairly average 2 WAR corner OF with decent offense and bad/awful defense with negative baserunning contributions. Those guys don't get $18M for a year, even if Gurriel can and does ultimately end up receiving more of a 3/30 type of contract. Edit: it's actually more extreme than I thought. He has a 140 wRC+ but only 0.6 WAR. Even if he keeps his current hitting up he'll be "on pace" for a <3 WAR season.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2023 Posted May 9, 2023 Speaking of butchers who can hit. Masataka Yoshida has a 155 wRC+ with elite metrics across the board for hitting but also only has a 0.6 WAR because of how awful his fielding and baserunning are. Kind of insane that a 29 year old 5'8 guy who's 180 lbs soaking wet can be this elite of a hitter but completely unathletic when it comes to every other facet of baseball. He's David Ortiz in the body of David Eckstein.

THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted May 11, 2023 Posted May 11, 2023 I really hope we're one of those teams.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted May 11, 2023 Posted May 11, 2023 I really hope we're one of those teams. Man, Giles has barely thrown any competitive pitches since 2019. Sure, the team should do their due diligence, but I wouldn't be too concerned if they choose to pass on him. He's almost certainly cooked.

I would have been concerned some other manager in the LOD would have scooped him up, so I said to myself have to make a quick move.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted May 11, 2023 Posted May 11, 2023 Mlbtr Mariners’ Offseason Trade Acquisitions Off To Slow Starts May 11th, 2023 at 3:20pm CST • By Anthony Franco The Mariners mostly shied away from the free agent market on the heels of their drought-ending playoff berth. Instead, Seattle turned to trade to add to a lineup that had been a bit top-heavy in 2022. Their two most notable transactions took place within the first few weeks of the offseason: reliever Erik Swanson and pitching prospect Adam Macko were shipped to Toronto for slugger Teoscar Hernández, while the M’s dealt Jesse Winker and Abraham Toro to the Brewers for second baseman Kolten Wong. Both Hernández and Wong are in their final seasons before free agency. Milwaukee had exercised a $10MM club option on Wong before trading him in what amounted to a roughly cash-neutral deal considering they took back Winker’s salary. Seattle took on a decent chunk of 2023 money to accommodate Hernández, who’d earn $14MM for his final season of arbitration eligibility (compared to the $1.25MM Swanson is making in his first of three arbitration years). Hernández, in particular, could eventually net the club a compensatory draft choice by rejecting a qualifying offer and signing elsewhere next offseason. Yet both trades were primarily about bolstering the lineup in 2023 while avoiding the longer-term downside associated with a multi-year free agent deal. To this point, neither player has met Seattle’s expectations. Hernández is sitting on a .215/.260/.396 batting line over 154 plate appearances. That’s nowhere close to the .283/.333/.519 line he’d compiled between 2020-22 to pick up a pair of Silver Slugger awards and down-ballot MVP finishes. His raw slash stats always seemed likely to dip somewhat with the move from Rogers Centre to T-Mobile Park. This has been a far more significant drop-off than is solely attributable to park factors and Hernández is performing worse on the road than he is in Seattle. Hernández has popped seven home runs, putting him on a 27-homer pace over 600 plate appearances. He’s still barreling the ball up and making hard contact when he puts the ball in play. The middle-of-the-order form he’d shown for years in Toronto still looks to be there. Yet his plate discipline has been rough thus far, resulting in a career-worst 3.2% walk rate and a massive 35.1% strikeout percentage.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted May 12, 2023 Posted May 12, 2023 We hosed the Mariners bad They prob shoukdnt have thrown in Macko But they did....
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted May 12, 2023 Posted May 12, 2023 Teoscar on pace to put up ~ 1.5 WAR at this pace for 14M isn't great even without trading Swanson and Macko to get him
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted May 12, 2023 Posted May 12, 2023 He can still get insanely hot. We have seen it before. He looks like a worst hitter in Baseball for a couple weeks and than he just turns a switch and you think he will hit a homer every at-bat. I think the Mariners always knew they would lose the trade in the future. Banking on him hitting some big homers for them. Could still happen.

Yes true He could still hit 30 bombs Team wanted impact this season but they're actually doing worse than last year so far Meanwhile KK has put up triple the WAR for 5M less Edited May 12, 2023 by G-Snarls
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted May 12, 2023 Posted May 12, 2023 Then again they're not that far about depsute being under 500. The Astros aren't running away this year. There are 4 teams who could win that division.

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted May 12, 2023 Posted May 12, 2023 It depends how good the Astros are this year. This is probably the weakest team they have had in a long time after a quiet offseason followed by some big injuries. If they come in around 87-88 wins like Fangraphs projects then I think the other teams have a chance, Rangers and Angels included. The Mariners could get back in it too but they have some major issues with their lineup and depth. I think the Rangers and Angels pose more of a threat.

Jose Abreu has been absolute dog s*** for them. Belt looks like prime Pujols compared to Abreu
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted May 13, 2023 Posted May 13, 2023 LGJ rocking a 135 wRC+ and already has as many bombs as he had all of 2022.

Stros let go Verlander, Cole, Correa and Springer and still getting it done. Altuve is coming back. If he is close to last season that helps. I think they will go on a run before long.

Yeah they are definitely the favorites and the train will keep rolling but it was one of those years where they made a strategic choice to not be as aggressive.

He's legitimately one of baseball's best hitters when he's on a patented hot streak but then he goes into prolonged funks for weeks and even months at a time where he accomplishes nothing offensively.
