This is one of the most ridiculous workout routines I have seen in my life. WTF kind of Borat ball-busting s*** was at 0:20? The guy can't even do normal f***ing squats, why are they making him do such elaborate routines? It's mostly for Instagram clout I guess. Basic squats, lunges, calf raises and deadlifts done properly should be good enough for him. I'll give him credit, that jump was good. Better than anything I can do and he outweighs me by at least 75 pounds.

Take that squat/calf routine 10 seconds in...okay maybe the trainer is trying to work on his balance? It's a dumb move though. Calf raises you should capable of lifting way more than what you can squat. So all he is doing is resting in between squat reps while making it look like he's working. Basic squatting is actually a more challenging move and extremely good for cardio.

Some of these things he is doing might be valid exercises for mobility or "explosiveness" or whatever but yeah it mostly looks like eyewash from rookie personal trainers who don't understand what they are doing.

I think at 20s thats an exercise strengthening the hamstring muscles? I’ve never seen it but that’s what it seems from trying to imagine the motion. I could understand doing something like that for any athlete of course

Yeah.... this. I was really impressed with the plyometrics box jump, but some of the workout routine looks like inefficent alternatives that just look 'cool'. Not a huge fan of the routine, BUT, it does look like he has lost a bit of weight, and at least he's in the gym. I'm hoping, to Laika's point, that the family directed routine will switch to the Jays professional trainers later in the off-season. Then on the flip side, I find it hard to believe he wouldn't have been provided some programs/direction from the Jays and he basically decided that he is going to go it 'his way'.

Nothing wrong with sumo deads tho.

Not sure what to think, but still hopeful he is getting his diet together as that will probably have the most impact on his physical fitness (assuming he at least is in the gym moving).

I think it’s really hard to make judgment on 45s of video

Lots of the work he’s doing is pretty standard. Westside Barbell Conjugate method training. Russian background

There’s more than one way to skin a cat. Is it optimal? Idk. Looks like he’s doing unilateral (single leg) work which makes sense to begin the offseason.

He’s clearly strong and springy as evidenced by that jump which is a good sign.

I guess we’ll see

Did you send him a s***** trade offer too?

No, I haven’t gotten a trade offer anywhere in a long time

It’s just a split squat where he doesn’t have to load the barbell on his back. Banded increases the tension as he gets to the top of each rep. Speed work

Some hammy but mostly quad/glutes

I feel like when he raises his leg, the pressure would be most on his hamstring side, idk. Don’t care enough to watch it again lol

You would know. They do so much differently now to build core, Quick twitch muscles and strength, in a much less stressful way on the body.

In the 80's when I played Univ football we used to just pile as much on the bar as we could - militaries, deads, bench and squats. I've had an artificial hip now since 2005 as a result lol. An O lineman on our team from the US in pre-season camp, who was All-Canadian, was doing his 2nd squat rep in Camp of 590 lbs and I'll never forget watching him go down temporarily paralyzed being taken to hospital. He never played another down in the game. We were just blockheads who didn't know any better. Nothing wrong with these exercises but there is a lot more you can do with less risks to complement them.

Spring training will be very interesting with Manoah, Kirk and Vlad to see how they look.

Damn! And preseason is when everyone is fired up and ready to show off their hard work, adrenaline pumping, all eyes on you. That’s too bad

Just like anything else especially in sports it’s become data driven. I’m not saying Manoah Performance is on the cutting edge of pitching development, but a lot of those exercises or variations would be found in various other programs.

In my opinion you want to do the least amount of work possible to illicit the greatest change. Sounds counter intuitive but you can’t just beat yourself to s*** all winter and expect to be in the best possible position come spring

Ya. It was the max testing he was doing. Bench and squats and chin ups/sprints etc etc My linebacker coach hated all the testing which went on over 2 days. He used to say “let’s get the f***ing helmets on and see who can really hit someone”.

Haha I love it. Old school mentality

Let’s see which of these pussies put out during the summer and which ones did f*** all

But three days later you realize it doesn’t matter because they talented guy who did f*** all is still in the starting lineup

Best player on our team was a safety who looked like a hobo and was bald in university already. He barely worked out. But he was f***ing mental and would literally run right through you. All Canadian every year. He was basically Adam Sandler in “Water Boy” in real life.

Nailed it. Almost guaranteed to happen at every university or college

This is the way. Copying the Arnold Schwarzenegger routine, a man who never actually played any organized team sports since his teenager days. Wonder why silly team trainers moved away from that?

Missing a very important ingredient from Arnold’s routine

When you see his illegitimate son, who now probably found his way to the needle, they had a nice base to work with though. It’s like the black people that have never worked out a day in their life and they take their shirt off and they’re ripped

That's a rough story. Even in the 90s when I was in Univ it was still about putting as much as you can on the bar and f*** form, get it up. Have quite a few friends still dealing with shoulder injuries from bench, knee or back injuries from deadlifts/squats, etc. I'm still putting in a lot of work in the gym now in my 40s, but it's all volume/strict form, bands, and mobility work. I'm sure today's exercise science for athletes focuses more about time under tension and reducing pressure on joints and reducing risk of injury, but I do think there are some convoluted exercises being pushed that are really inefficient at working the target muscles by including too much stabilizing/core.

Spring training is going to be telling, I really hope these guys show up with some fire in their eyes after putting in the work over the off-season.

Yes of course genetics plays a big part but steroids also do.

Average dude on juice could probably beat Arnold’s best possible natty physique. With the same dedication/routine of course, that’s a another big part of the equation.

Hypothetical trade

Vlad Jr and Espinal to SD for Tatis Jr and Machado. Who says no? Value wise it grades out as a win for the Jays on BTV (2.8 median value out and 7 in). Most trades Atkins makes usually have the Jays gaining around 5-10 median value on BTV.

Why in the world would the Padres even begin to consider that trade?

I agree I hope they do too. If this year can’t light a fire under their ass nothing will

Why in the world do you even bother replying to something like that? Dude is the biggest troll on the board

What's a Vlad trade you would make then? I was just posting a hypothetical, nothing too outlandish like BNS ******** Dylan Carlson for Alek Manoah hypothetical which would cost the Jays 11 median value on BTV. Atkins gains BTV median value in trades, he rarely loses it.
