If the Jays made these moves earlier in the off-season they might have signed at least one of the high-end pitchers they were after! lol Who wouldn't want to pitch in front of that defense?

If you want to see some upside, just consider that he's an extreme left handed pull hitter that won't have to deal with extreme shifting going forward. That alone should bump the overall offense a few points. It's not going to turn him into Barry Bonds, but a 115 wRC+ isnt hard to see as a possibility.

Yeah that's definitely the hope. I just don't see as much red in his Savant page, like we did with Nootbar, where we could actually dream on rockets making it through the infield defense.

In this case, we're hoping dribblers make it through...

Not exactly the greatest recipe to dream on imo.

He is not here to carry us offensively. He is here to be average offensively while reducing our pitchers ERAs.

No qualms whatsoever about what he adds defensively. Him and KK allow Springer to act like a statue on LF and preserve his health, hopefully for a full-season. There's infinite value in a full season of Springer ABs.

Have a peak at his minor league numbers - they will make you feel better. He wasn't a high K% guy and tore up the minors. There's certainly more potential in that bat.

Thanks. Will look at his FG and unhide the minors numbers. Will need to hang my hope hat on this.

It can’t all be cheerleaders and rah rah. You know sometimes these things don’t work out. You can like certain parts of a deal, yet pick at others. It’s like the Mesiah is coming, or nothing

I’m off to the gym, so you get you wish for tonight Spank-off. So take your dentures out and relax

Is this a borrowed line?

Every time Toronto Ross trades away a prospect I now just assume they are lower on him than the industry.

Atkins deserves this benefit of the doubt at this point. They have rarely (never?) traded away a prospect and regretted it.

Maybe they think Moreno is overrated.

They did sell high on Martin when the power dipped so you could be onto something. Maybe they feel Moreno's power never returns after his wrist injury in AA?

Let's wait and see how Teo and LGJ play the new outfield dimensions in the games they play in Toronto as opposing players and imagine a full year of abismal fielding which leads to added pitcher workload and more runs per game.

They don't give a s*** about optics for Lourdes f***ing Gurriel, lmao.

They just traded Teoscar Hernandez (way better player) for a reliever.

This front office is ruthless. It's all calculated and they all have asperbergers so they don't care or understand social impact.

This is why I'm generally curious if Atkins would make an offer to Bauer.

People with Asperger’s do understand extreme social discomfort and a horde of screeching leftists is very disconcerting

After doing some research, I love the trade. Sucks we give up Moreno but..

We had the best catcher duo last season, now we still have the best catcher duo and have (arguably?) the best OF defense to go with it.

Prospect pool is looking thin now but I think Tiedemann, Barriera, Toman, and Zulu, still gives us a strong top 5. If Martinez figures things out we'll be laughing. Barger too I hope!

Berrios WILL bounce back and we could very well have a top rotation easily, and the offseason isn't over yet.

This will be a fun season!

I agree. Shapiro doesn't give off spectrum vibes, and he would most certainly stop that in the internal discussion phase.

I'm not looking for "depth" when I'm trading the best prospect in baseball who looks like he'll be a perennial .300+ batter with elite defense at a premium position.

Like I said, you only trade a guy like Moreno for a superstar and nothing less. Then we added Gurriel to the trade for the fun of it. This is a total panic move from a guy who's trying to keep his job this upcoming season.

That sort of player would have fewer years of control, or have a hefty contract and be on the wrong side of 30.

They seem concerned about cost control now

LGJ and Teo were getting a bit expensive in later arb years and now we have Varsho and KK quite cost effective

Though all at the same same time they're paying Springer 25M.

Varsho in 22 was worth a win more than Teo and Gurriel combined. If he has another 4+ win season and Kiermaier is healthy at all this is a big upgrade on the team in general.

Varsho is a f***ing linebacker. Bichette is going to get killed if he goes into the outfield and Varsho freight-trains him.

Yeah dude is built like a bulldog. Similar build to Trout

Varsho was a top 30 position player in regards to fWar as a 26 year old...and brings flexibility. If you have to overpay, he's the type of player to overpay for. I don't think there will be much of a difference in value between the 2, if they live up to their ceilings. I was disappointed in the move, but I get it. They are trying to win this year and Varsho checks off so many boxes that they were looking for. They traded from a strength. And his versatility adds extra value that can't be measured.

Seems to me Varsho is going to help us win more games immediately and that's kind of the point in a good trade. Is Varsho going to get any time at C though? Sorry could not read through the 22 pages of nonsense to see if this was already discussed.

Also must hurt Gurriel to read this MLB top headline "Varsho to Blue Jays for prized young catcher" <--- not even mentioned

I’d imagine that would sting a little if you did read it. Best to just stay off of social media if/when you get traded I’d think.

Reading some more of these comments, it feels like people still have PTSD from the Ricciardi drafting and development years where the best home grown talents were Lind, Hill, Romero and Rios over a decade. That PTSD has resulted in prospect hoarding syndrome. I suffer from it too sometimes, since my first reaction to the deal wasn't positive. After looking at the situation, it's a fair trade and both sides have won.

Regarding the farm being thin. Of course it's going to be thin. They just graduated a whole ton of guys over the past 2-3 years and have a pretty set roster for the next 2-3 years. By the time they need some replacements, the farm will have been replenished. I'm also in the camp that the Jays know their prospects best and trust them when they are "selling low". Previous regimes would have us believing that Ricky Romero was the ace of the future because they had no choice but to hype up what little they had.

On a team where guys like pittance free agent signing Kirk and late round draft pick Jansen came up with relatively little fanfare to become significant contributors, the Jays have set themselves up where they can "sell low" on Moreno...and two years from now we'll probably see a Moreno-level talent to be excited over again. And yes Jansen was an AA pick but he didn't really do much in the minors until Shapiro was around so the new regime gets credit for their role in player development. When you pick a guy past the 10th round that turns into a good player that's 90% PD, 10% draft luck and 0% draft skill. If you were that good, you should have picked him at least 5 rounds beforehand.

I actually checked to see if you had him in one, or both. It’s both lol

I am in 10 leagues and I have him in 9 out of 10. Don’t you think I haven’t been trying to acquire him the in that one also.

Leftists don't like scumbags. f***, am I a leftist? I have read a good deal of marx for school if that helps.

Anyway, i don't think this deal means they are down on Moreno. It just means that really good defensive outfielders on the market are very very scarce, and this one is a leftie as well. They just had to pay the price. Of course, as a leftist, i think we should all collectively own Varsho but that’s a different story.

I’m buying my Varsho jersey as soon as they figure out which number he’ll wear
