I guess there's a chance he could turn into an Andrew Miller beast mode reliever, IDK how much team control he has left but it's gotta be longer than 1 year

All of baseball hopes their bullpen arms can turn into Andrew Miller. Just cant believe you'd trade one of your best hitters for that uncertainty when you're going for the world series.

I think we needed to trade Teo. His nonchalant attitude in the field and on the bases was getting so much worse and had to be an issue with his teammates. Four years of Swanson is a decent return for Teo if the FO believes he can be a key piece.

Adam Macko is Slovakian, which you don't see every day. He must have an interesting backstory.

f*** the lottery ticket... you're talking about one of your best hitters on the team that has proven it for a few years already.

I want someone who is proven!! We're not rebuilding, we're trying to win the f***ing world series man. Not meaning to swear at you btw.

Would you f***ing relax. The bullpen needed to be better and it is now with someone who has 3 full years of control still. Let the FO complete the offseason before you freak out. If we go out and sign Conforto to a 1 year $15M deal then he completely replaces what Teo gave us - AND we have Swanson as our new setup guy. Have you seen what relief pitchers are signing for as FA's this year? My scenario above is a f***TON better than handing out 3 or 4 year deals worth $30M-$45M for a top end reliver and keeping Teo.

Hard to fully judge this move until we see the follow up. There's a big hole in the OF and lineup now which will obviously be filled at some point. We need to see how it's filled. Will it be a CF or someone like Conforto? Maybe there's a trade out there. The team probably has to trade a reliever at some point as well as it's getting crowded now and not enough RP's with options to make it work.

A lot of sabr guys here will devalue Teo because of the defense, but you need bats in the playoffs. WAR is not the same come playoff time for these guys building incremental value over 162 games. Yes, obviously that helps you get to the post season but it’s less important when it’s a post season roster already

I dont disagree, like I said in another thread earlier, i wasnt thrilled about the return either. Trading a 130 WRC+ OF for a reliever and a "What if ..." doesnt make a whole lot of sense in itself.

BUT, the salary relief also has value, as long as they do something smart with it. Like signing Nimmo.

Lets say they do sign Nimmo... then you look at the more overall transaction as Teoscar + slightly more money and you get Nimmo, Swanson and lotto ticket. Outfield Defense improves SIGNIFICANTLY, the offense likely doesnt suffer and the pen gets better.

We didn't trade Teoscar for Swanson and Macko

We traded 1 year of Teoscar for 3 years of Swanson plus potentially 6 years of Macko.

With only one year of control left on Teoscar, and declining numbers (increased K rate), Teoscar doesn't have a lot of value left.

Waiting until the all-star break will significantly diminish his value, particularly if he has a slow start.

Atkins is trying to build a sustainable team. You do that by trading guys with one year of control (and some value) away for prospects and players with more years of control left.

However, with both him and probably Tapia gone, we do need to bring in a quality outfielder in a big way.

At first blush I'm not a huge fan of this trade given how Teo was a legitimate middle of the order thumper. Swanson was a beast in 2022 so hopefully he can keep that up. Macko looks to be the key return for the Jays, his K numbers in the low minors are very impressive, hopefully he can develop into a starter moving forward, the stuff looks to be legitimately very good.

Wanna know what else you need in the playoffs? Swing and miss relievers.

Might be the new closer

We need to remember that Teoscar is projected to make 14.1 million this season. How much surplus value is even there? We can spend the money better elsewhere in my opinion.

This is a good trade. A very good trade. Teo is a 30-year old ~ league average corner outfielder with 1 year of control left, in which he'll earn around 15M. That doesn't have much value. In return they get 3 years of a reliever who's every bit as good as Jordan Romano, and they get him for about 13M cheaper than Teo is going to be in 2023. They also get a lotto ticket in Macko.

If Swanson was a sure thing out of the pen then it'd be easy to swallow but you can't fault me for expecting volitility from a bullpen arm who's had 1 great year. Did we really need to get ripped off in one move to make another? Didn't realize we were turning into a small market team here...

Valid point but trade something else:(

Dammit. Teo was my favorite guy on the team after Springer… will definitely miss him. He was super clutch too, that playoff performance against Seattle will be forgotten but he was huge for us there. He had the nastiest bat drops/pimps.

If this makes the team better, then so be it. Hoping this means we go hard after a lefty OF now.

It could simply be that they decided to allocate Teo’s money to a lefty bat of similar caliber… Nimmo??

There will definitely be another move to get a new OF of similar value or better so I like the move. Teoscar was never going to return something big given that he was close to being cost neutral.

Another positive is that this trade reduces the number of players Vlad can clown with during games.

Lmao yes they kinda did... it’s called saving 14M

I like this trade, there are a lot of positives to it.

We get a high leverage reliever, who can slot right into a setup slot and has plenty of control left. So far this offseason good relievers have been getting paid big time. Swanson has a super sexy statcast page. https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/erik-swanson-657024?stats=statcast-r-pitching-mlb

Macko is the Mariners 8th ranked prospect on fangraphs, he'll probably slot in top 10 for us as well. He's way more than your low level lottery ticket.

Teoscar will be getting about 15 million next year, if they go out and sign a CFer and put that money towards the signing it'll be fine. This allows Springer to move into RF.

The inverse of this would be trading three years of Jordan Romano for one year of Mitch Haniger

People would be PISSED if that happened

Can’t please everybody

I’m sure they would’ve preferred to trade LGJ

All this tells me is that the Jays are shaking things up and the team is probably going to look fairly different next year.

Teo has one year remaining and was always unlikely to be re signed. Use that money on a different OF or in the rotation.

This move on its own is going to look disappointing. Need to reserve judgment until we see how they allocate the savings.

I 100% agree. On its own, this trade looks bad. But I think by April 1, 2022, it will totally make sense and be a solid move to allow for many other moves. I like this pitcher, puts up positive fWAR, and isn't a FA until 2026.

If we can land one of the best OF free agents in the market then of course I'd be happy but that's asking a lot to pull him away from the friggin Mets of all teams. You all know who their owner is.

Here is another scenario:

1- Trade one of Kirk or Moreno for an Arizona OF

2- Use the 15M and add around 10M to sign Rondon.

Can't see why people are mad about this trade.

I love Teo, but let's face it, he's a 30 yr old outfielder, with 1 year left on his contract, with some question marks going forward. Trading him for 3 years of an elite reliever plus a really intriguing prospect can only be considered a win.
