BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted September 18, 2022 Posted September 18, 2022 Bad break today. Really Sucked. One of those innings. Couple sliders up and good hitting. Hit and run worked and nice job taking 98 the other way. Romano wasn't that bad. Don't know what that 95 was for the last 2 runs. He had been both good and pretty lucky lately.

He's been pretty sick this season though.
Laika Community Moderator Posted September 18, 2022 Posted September 18, 2022 That ball to Rutschman was an easy double play if they weren't playing the massive overshift. When you have a guy who throws a 100 and situation where a guy is just looking to make contact, I'm not sure about the big shift there. It's probably just hindsight analysis though..lol. The Blue Jays defensive positioning has been sublime this year. Hard to question it at all at this point. There will always be random balls in play that make a shift look stupid

Laika Community Moderator Posted September 19, 2022 Posted September 19, 2022 Buck and Pat are poisoning their brains It’s so annoying. Every time someone “crosses up” the shift these guys are euphoric. But they rarely get happy when defensive alignment causes an out - they don’t even mention it most of the time.

Meanwhile I can't even count how many times I've thought "wow, Bo (or Espinal) was put exactly where that ball was just hit". Like every game you see it multiple times. We rarely talk about how lucky we are to have him considering he is found money that bounced back to us from TEX around Rule 5. I do think he is love with the slider, because its been working. But I'd still like him to use the FB more, especially if he has any command that night. First 2 hits were not his best SL - up and not sharp. Mind you they got a hits off 95 and 98 FBs as well. SL use up from 37% in '21 to 53% in '22. Big move. People think Romano >< Osuna was for us in that role? Edited September 19, 2022 by BigCecil

Funny you say that and I feel the same way - but its all anecdotal. From memory Osuna didn't throw quite as hard but both slider and change were effective.
Laika Community Moderator Posted September 19, 2022 Posted September 19, 2022 If we're going back to the past talking about Blue Jays closers I'm going to say one word that trumps all. HENKE! well yeah Henke and Ward

From memory Osuna didn't throw quite as hard but both slider and change were effective. Even Osuna gave up the go-ahead run in that final ALCS game vs the Royals in 2015. Aroldis Chapman in 2016 gave up that huge homer to Rajai Davis in game 7. And didn’t Andrew Miller give up a homerun in that game too? Even the most elite closers aren’t gonna be perfect. Lets just hope Romano bounces right back and doesn’t have an extended slump or anything like that.

From memory Osuna didn't throw quite as hard but both slider and change were effective. He had better control with the fastball. And it seemed relative to the league his velocity was just as good as Romano's. 6 years ago I don't remember top velocity being 103 like Bautista yesterday. Henke blew some big games over the years. Blown games when Blue Jays could have virtually eliminated their prime playoff competitor 1985 - Friday night against the Yankees Henke blows a chance to clinch. One out maybe even one strike away. End result - Jays win anyway the next day 1987 - Sunday or Monday - Jays have chance to go 4.5 up against Tigers with 6 to go. Henke blows it, 2.5 up with 6 to go. End result - Historic collapse 1990 - Friday night. Jays leading could go 1 up on Sox with 5 to go, Henke blows it. One behind instead. End result - Boston wins the East. 2016 - Wednesday I believe. Jays have chance to move 3 up on Orioles with 4 to play. Osuna blows it. End result - Jays tie for wild card anyway, but Thursday through Tuesday becomes a stress-fest with Jays one play from missing the playoffs at several points. 2022 - Sunday, Jays could go 8 up on Orioles with 15 to play. Romano Blows it. End result ? - Models say Jays still have 99% chance of making the playoffs. Probably the PTSD from 87 but seems 50/50 to me. Orioles probably now just focused on getting to withiun 3 by final series in Baltimore, in which case they then have a 100% chance of sweeping, and have the tie breaker. lol.

It would take quite a collapse for the Jays not to make the playoffs, even a split with the Rays in Tampa would virtually seal one of the wildcard spots. Orioles schedule is about 50/50 in terms on easy/hard. Next 3 against the Tigers, then 4 against Houston, 4 against Boston but then they finish up with 3 against the yankes and 3 vs the Jays. Chances are their fate will be sealed prior to the Yankees series.

bendera3 Verified Member Posted September 19, 2022 Posted September 19, 2022 100%. Romano has been very solid if not elite effective for us. If I recall correctly no one was really devastated when Romano was taken in the Rule 5 draft he was just viewed as an average middle reliever. I hate when saves are blown and we lose the game but he went from a Rule 5 return to a pitcher many view as an elite back end pitcher. Everyone has bad games.

Everyone has bad games. he was a mediocre SP prospect back then 3. Chicago White Sox (Traded to Rangers) Jordan Romano, RHP (from Blue Jays) – Romano is a 25-year-old righty who spent 2018 at Double-A. He’s a strike-throwing righty with a fastball in the 91-93 range and he has an average slider and changeup, both of which reside in the 80-84 range. His command is advanced enough that both of his secondaries play up a little bit. He likely profiles as a fifth starter or rotation depth, but the Rangers current pitching situation is quite precarious and Romano may just end up sticking around to eat innings with the hope that he sticks as a backend starter or swingman when they’re competitive once again.
Laika Community Moderator Posted September 19, 2022 Posted September 19, 2022 Romano's transformation is pretty remarkable You'd expect a SP who is 91-93 to be like 93-95 in the pen. So clearly he trained and added significant velocity upside on top of that. And he probably improved the slider by one MAYBE EVEN TWO full scouting grades somehow. It's interesting how his 2019 numbers in both MLB and AAA were s*** in the results department as he learned how to relieve. Had the K rate though. But got destroyed in the majors and AAA in terms of ERA/FIP.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted September 19, 2022 Posted September 19, 2022 Romano is 34/39 in Save Opportunities but it seems like a lot of them have been high pressure 1 run games. Would love to see how he compares to other closers in really close games.

Kenley Jansen has 7 blown saves Rays have the most blown saves with 29 Braves have 26 Orioles have the fewest with 11 Jays middle of the pack with 21 Yankees have 18 Not exactly what you were asking but it's interesting and relevant
Laika Community Moderator Posted September 19, 2022 Posted September 19, 2022 Rays have a lot of blown saves probably because they play a lot of close games? Also they use relievers a lot. They lead baseball in holds. Like they have the most innings pitched from their pen and it's not even close. They also lead baseball in Shutdowns. And they are second in shutdown minus meltdown differential.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 19, 2022 Posted September 19, 2022 Also f*** the Orioles for somehow salvaging Felix Bautista Can he keep this up???
