I've deleted a bunch of posts (as did BTS), not because they crossed any lines, but because I specifically said "no more on this subject".

This forum has a history of not being able to handle certain topics without them getting far out of line, which is why we're more strict on anything that can be interpreted as politics.

It’s clear Shatkins are taking the Alanta Braves route this year.

I’m fine with it this year. Down years from Bo and Vlad have changed the outlook for this season.

Yeah if Vlad and Bo are not superstars then the ceiling of this team drops pretty significantly. Still a good team but not a team you’re going to go broke for. Get to the playoffs, hope for the best, then reload in the winter.

Funny that a down year from Vladdy is him still hitting at an all star level but a down year from Bo is him hitting like a replacement level scrub for 2 of 4 months so far.

Yeah.. Bo and Vlad should not be mentioned in the same breathe. One looks like a AAAA player this year

Bo is hitting like a league average player, not a replacement level scrub.

His extrapolation is about 2.4 fWAR at this point and his updated projection would be in the 2.7 to 3.3 fWAR range

Tough stretch with the stick lately though...

Yeah these are very different seasons between them. Bo has been very mediocre and a slightly below average hitter for most of the season.

We're just disappointed Vlad isn't destroying baseballs like he did last year. fWAR has him at 2.7 WAR and bWAR has him at 3.3. He's probably going to produce between 4-5 WAR this year. That's great. Not a year you'd ever normally complain about, if he hadn't put up MVP numbers last year.

Think a 140 wRC+/5 WAR 1B who has dramatically improved his defense during a, presumably, down year is great. The only issue, really, has been since the hand injury from Hicks his timing hasn't been there leading to terrible LA/increased GB% - GIDPs. Which is somewhat getting better of late, I think? More of his peppered baseballs are ending up as doubles. His HR rate went down (like kinda hard pressed to think he'll hit 30 HRs at this rate unless he goes on an absolute tear) but OBP of .360 is pretty good for a guy with explosive athletic speed (who finally is allowed to steal bases if he gets good jumps).

I don't know about Bo though. And I am not sure how 'committed' they are to him long-term. His discipline at the plate is going to get ridiculed for the rest of his career and he's clearly sticking to it - swing first, think later. It won't age well and it just comes down to how much rope he'll have.

He's fine as a SS but definitely is not a bat you want at the top of the line up (LGJ comfortably took that role this year), but he has been untouchable alongside Vlad to any sort of shifts for the better of lineup.

Up until this season Bo was able to largely get away with the bottom of the barrel plate discipline and still put up 120 WRC+ type results. His swing profile this season hasn't changed a ton this season compared to previous seasons, but this looks like the death by a thousand cuts type of situation as teams are pitching him down and away a bit more compared to previous years while at the same time Bo is offering at these pitches a bit more as well. In previous years he has been able to pick up a decent amount of hits in this zone but that's largely disappeared in 2022. The one thing that stands out the most to me is how much Bo has struggled against fastballs this season. He's never really done a huge amount of damage against fastballs in previous years, but this year he's really struggled against both 4 seamers and sinkers. Could this be an approach related issue? Bo has largely feasted on offspeed and breaking pitches this season, which makes me wonder if he's sitting off-speed most of the time and ending up being late to the fastball.

Bo has never really looked locked in for any extended period of the season, so hopefully he can work to improve his swing decision making over time. He's never really displayed great pitch recognition/plate discipline at any point in the past, so unfortunately he may just continue to be his own worst enemy with continued over aggressiveness at the plate. Bo needs to look no further than his teammate Lourdes Gurriel Jr. to see what a dramatic difference dropping your chase rate by a relatively small rate (4% or so in this case) can make to the overall results at the plate.

The trade deadline did not happen in a vacuum. All our competition got much better compared to us. Not satisfied with making the playoffs and going out round one. Hope, we get hot is not a good strategy.

Bass is good for 7th inning or below... Pop, I like very much but not ready yet to assume late inning roles.. Not a high K guy..

I feel if Romano gets hurt or starts sucking, we have no bonafide closer.. I was hoping to have closers coming in from the 7th on and set up types 5th inning on..

First question out of the mouths of MLB.TV commentators and former GMs when we did the White trade was; What do the Dodgers know that the Jays don't...? In other words, why would the Dodgers give up a young controllable rotation piece and for the return.... What is the catch?? When dealing with the Dodgers I always say the same thing... I don't mind White and think he is a good complimentary piece.. No issues with that.. But as our only potential for SP/long relief help... Compared to SPs our immediate competition got... Nope...

Wit Merrifield.. I do really like this move. I think he is the perfect veteran piece that will excel down the stretch and in the playoffs. He plays a key position/s for us with our delicate flowers situation.. Reminds me of the Royals picking up Ben Zobrist in 2015 and I think Merrifield will be the exact same type of player and be clutch/money in the playoffs. I also very much like that he is a contact type hitter who can generate some runs with small ball if needed... The last thing I thought we needed was a low contact, low average, low OBP (this year) HR type like Gallo.. We have the power guys...

The way I look at is we are a tech company selling our new model cell phone and competing against a bunch of other cell phone companies.

The other companies just released new 6g cell phones with NASA satellite level zoom cameras and we countered by releasing a 5G cell phone with new emojis and faster shutter speed.. Yea, we have a cool really nice cell phone, but compared to our competition not so much.

AL Teams better then us- NYY, Astros, Mariners. Teams that will be very hard to beat, we are not significantly better then- Minnesota, Cleveland wont be easy..

NL Teams better than us- Padres, LAD, Mets, Braves.

Goal is to win WS.. That is the gauntlet we need to run through..

We are a better team now then we were in the AM, without a doubt.. Not sure if we play 3-4 one run close games we are better then any of those Teams...

About right....

Our ace pitchers failed to execute against what, by playoff standards, was a very very bad lineup. Our league best offense failed to score enough against what was very hittable pitching.

Those two areas arguably could not and should not have been addressed in any significant way at the deadline. The problems go far deeper than getting whatever reliever was available. If you can't beat Seattle in the playoffs than you can't beat any team, let alone compete with Houston or New York.

I’d say Gausman did pretty well. Box score looks bad but he probably could have gotten out of that inning with only 1 ER.

And the offense scored 9 runs. That should be more than enough to win a ballgame.

I am in an off-board fantasy league where we have $ budgets and contracts etc. In the pre-season there is a prediction game that we play that if we win we get more contract $.

Questions like who will be the 6 playoffs teams, which team will finish 10th who will represent the AL, NL in the WS, who will win the WS.

I chose Seattle to win the WS. I just don’t see why you think they are such a crappy team?? They are built for the playoffs, more so then we are/were.

Not to mention the magic/team of destiny stuff they clearly have going on this year. 13 walkoff wins?? They are very clutch

I don't really believe anything about them. It's just a fact that's made obvious by statistics. Things like clutchness are not repeatable skills.

This isn't really a discussion about Seattle and I'm not about to go down that road again. This is a discussion about the Blue Jays.

Game one was entirely Luis Castillo and Andres Munoz. It quite literally does not get less hittable than that, unless you're talking like Spencer Strider or Jake DeGrom. They scored 9 runs in game 2. "the offense failed to score enough against very hittable pitching" is just a bizarre way too characterize the series.

If Jays Berrios move didn’t spectacularly blow up in their face, maybe Castillo plays for the good guys

The Brad Hand deal last year was literally the difference of not making the playoffs. 2 giant whiffs the last two years, with a title contender
Posted
While you can mention Brad Hand as probably costing Jays at least 1 game overall, it’s impossible to claim the moves this year were the difference between the playoffs and not. So as they did absolutely nothing for the playoffs, on paper or real life, it’s an F for fail
